2 For God so loved the orld that he gave his only Son, so that everyone The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Clevel, Ohio Most Reverend Nelson J. Perez, Bishop of Clevel Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla, Bishop Emeritus Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon, Bishop Emeritus Most Rev. Roger W. Gries, OSB, Aux. Bishop, Retired Cathedral Staff Rev. Sean Ralph, Rector Rev. Arnel A. Lagman, Parochial Vicar Deacon John P. Sferry, Deacon, Retired Carolyn Apperson Religious Education Coordinator Gregory Heislman, Music Director & Organist Joseph Petros, Organist In Residence Rev. Donald P. Oleksiak Rev. John E. Manning Rev. Daniel F. Schlegel Our Cathedral Mission is to provide all people ith access to the saving love of God through Word, Sacraments, a community of ustice love, that empoered by the Holy Spirit, e might all become beloved disciples of Jesus Christ, living inviting others to a holy abundant life. Cathedral Parish Membership November: 1,059 households, 1,717 individuals Parish Finances Due to publishing deadlines, the eekly figures ill be included in next eek s bulletin. Dear Parishioners, Friends, Visitors to the Cathedral, I am going to deviate from our usual examination of the lives of the Saints in order to update you on a small change to the Cathedral s liturgical calendar. With the declining number of clergy, one of the things that parishes have been asked to take a look at is hether or not there are more Masses than are necessary on their liturgical schedules. While e are blessed here to have a number of priests in residence, retired priests, as ell as a parochial vicar, ho generously assist ith the Cathedral s sacramental schedule, there is no guarantee that this ill alays be the case. Our liturgical schedule is quite robust ith confessions Mass three times each eekday, to Saturday daily Masses ith confessions, an anticipatory Mass on Saturday evening ith confession, four Masses on Sunday, much of that ill remain as it is presently. After consultation ith the parish staff the pastoral council, the one change that e are going to make is to eliminate the noon Mass confessions on Saturday only; the 7:15 am Mass ith confessions the 4:30 pm anticipatory Mass ith confession ill remain. This decision as made for several reasons. First, the Cathedral is blessed to have a large number of eddings hich are celebrated at noon 2:00 pm on Saturdays. This means that for a good part of the year, the noon Mass on Saturday is replaced ith a edding anyho. [As an aside, eddings are not private celebrations, but a celebration of the hole Church. Thus, any Catholic is alays elcome to attend any edding Mass that is celebrated here at the Cathedral. Meaning, if you ould like to participate in Mass on a Saturday afternoon there is a edding being celebrated, you are alays elcome to attend that Mass.] Second, ithin the Cathedral s parish territory e have the Conversion of Saint Paul Shrine at 40 th Euclid, hich offers Mass confessions at the same time as the Cathedral currently does on Saturday afternoons. So anyone donton ho ishes to go to confession or participate in Mass on a Saturday afternoon can still do so at the Conversion of Saint Paul Shrine. Finally, although not a maor consideration in this decision, is the reality that more more people are opting to have funerals celebrated on Saturdays, other significant events in the life of the Diocese such as ordinations certifications also take place on Saturdays. The last regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon Mass confessions ill be Saturday, December 8th the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (A Holy Day of Obligation). 2
