Editorial From Junk to Jesus by Shannon Wilpitz What questions would you expect someone to ask at your garage sale? Here are the top five questions I am asked: 1. How much is this? 2. Would you take less for it? 3. Is that for sale? 4. Do you have any tools? 5. What church do you attend? This past weekend was our annual community-wide garage sale day. My husband and I cleaned out the attic and offered our long-stored junk to the community at bargain prices. We seldom have garage sales because you spend long hours sorting and cleaning dust-covered (and sometimes insect-covered) items only to have them sell at half your asking price, which was already a fraction of the purchase price. There are so many negatives that the one positive of having carloads of strangers come to my home seemed to escape me. Then someone asked the question, What church do you attend? At that moment, I realized that every encounter with someone is an opportunity, and perhaps this garage sale was not about the opportunity to share my junk, but to share my Jesus. My husband hooked up speakers in the garage to play music through his phone. It randomly selected songs, many from Hillsong, Chris Tomlin, Bethel Music, Israel Houghton, and the like. Suddenly while an unsuspecting lady was looking through purses hanging on a pole at the entrance to the garage, DC Talk began blasting Jesus Freak. Not exactly shopping music, at least not for most people. The woman looked up and said, I haven t heard this song in a long time. That was it. We bonded over Jesus Freak. She asked what church I attended and said she could see my faith on me. What I saw on me was a sloppy, got-three-hours-ofsleep bun, old tennis shoes, and a coffee stain running down the length of my maxi-skirt. But she saw my faith. That day I met a lady who shared my love for old DC Talk, a single mom from Nigeria with a daughter the same age as mine, a man who bought a figurine of Jesus washing His disciples feet to set on his desk at work, and a young family whose son galloped back to their car on his new stick horse. There were many others with whom I may never cross paths again. I hope I did what God wanted me to do with this opportunity, even if it was to just be there, smile at them, and let them see faith. This quarter is about sharing the gospel. There are as many ways to do that as there are people willing to do it. I am hopeful that our students will discover through the examples presented in these lessons how they can trust God, follow God, grow in God, and share God with others. 3 Theme Development Sharing the Gospel (The Sweet Life) There is an old song that says, It gets sweeter as the days go by. It gets sweeter as the moments fly. His love is richer, deeper, fuller, sweeter. Sweeter, sweeter, sweeter as the days go by. God s love for us is sweet, and living for God is the sweet life! This quarter, students will follow the early church through Acts and Romans. They will see that life can sometimes be hard, and at other times, it may get sticky. However, when you are living the sweet life, it will all be worth it in the end. Don't Miss These Features Home Connection On the bottom of each activity paper is a URL address for parents to take advantage of the Home Connection. Review questions, activities, and memory work are provided for at-home discussion. Be sure to show this to parents when they pick up their children, or make copies of the Home Connection (trp) for each student to take home. Activity Papers Toddler Home Connection Ages 2 3 Today I heard about the ravens who fed Elijah. Activity papers are an integral part of each lesson and a tool to help students understand and retain what is presented in class. You will be directed within each lesson when and how to use the activity papers. Sometimes they will be used during an opening activity, as a prayer tool, or as an aid for memory work. Other times they may be used as an accompaniment to the Bible lesson or to reinforce the life application. Regardless of how or where activity papers are used, each student will need his or her own paper. Encourage students to take their papers home as a reminder of what they learned in class. Facebook Join us on our Facebook group, Word Aflame Primary Curriculum Teachers. Interact with editors and Sunday school teachers. Share tips and gather ideas. Post pictures of your class and encourage others by posting what God is doing in your students lives. We teach together; now we can interact together. God Sends Ravens to Elijah Q: Where did God tell Elijah to hide? A: By the stream Q: How did Elijah get his water? A: From the stream Q: What brought Elijah his food? A: Ravens Talk Time You can read this miracle story in I Kings 17:2 6. As you review the activities and memory work, talk with your child about how God keeps us safe. Here are some lesson-related books to read: Six Crows by Leo Lionni Elijah Helps a Widow Arch Book by Nanette Thorenson-Snipes Lulu s Crow Garden by Lizi Boyd Bible Passage: Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe (Psalm 119:117). Bible Words: I Kings 17:2 6 Scripture Text: John 9:1 12 Kindergarten & Beginner Home Connection Pre-K Grade 2 Read Joshua 2 to learn what happened when Rahab chose to follow the one true God. Q: Why did Joshua send spies into Jericho? A: To study the city before they conquered it. Q: Why did Rahab want to follow the one true God? A: She heard about Him and believed. Truth about God God desires every individual to follow Him. Bible Lesson Verse And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho (Joshua 6:25). I follow the one true God. Together Time Hide a bag of treats. Write two sets of instructions, one that leads to the treats and one that does not. Select two leaders. Family members decide which leader to follow. Discuss how it felt upon realizing they followed the wrong leader. Follow the one true God! Word Time Learn these passages with your child. Unit 1 Bible Verse: Romans 8:37 Special Memory Passage: Hebrews 11:6 Primary & Preteen Home Connection Grades 3 6 God Saves Us Rahab was given specific instructions to hang a scarlet ribbon in her window. Pin a red ribbon on a family member each evening this week, and pay extra attention to their instructions. If you are the one wearing the ribbon, test how well the others are watching, listening, and following by giving some silly instructions to follow. Keep the ribbons as a reminder that following God s instructions will save us. Lesson Pentecostal Publishing House, All rights reserved. SUMMER 2017 CUT HERE Room Decoration Based on the size of your room(s) and the number of students typically in attendance, it may be necessary to limit decorations to the walls or bulletin boards to reserve floor space for students and class activities. For this reason, decorations have been divided into two categories: basic and three-dimensional. Please keep in mind that not all 3-D suggestions require a great deal of space. So even if you are mainly interested in basic decorations, there may be something in the 3-D sections that would work in your room. Are you running short on time? Find a senior saint, teenager, or parent who wants to help, and ask them to make copies and cut out items for lessons. Teaching Walls Wall 1: Instructional Wall This is the wall with the writing board where you teach the Bible lesson. Remember to keep all important items eye level with students. Anything higher than the writing board should simply be for show, not for interaction or teaching. Mount the Kids in Missions map (trp) to this wall as a reminder to pray for our missionaries. Mount the New Birth Sundae poster (trp) to this wall, and refer to it each class period. 3

Bible connection: Let this wall serve as a reminder that this world is not our home. Jesus is preparing a sweet home for us in Heaven. That is a message worth sharing! Wall 2: Candy Cottage Create a candy cottage (or church). Start with a large floor-to-ceiling cutout of a house. Do not worry about straight lines or perfect proportions. Freehand is your friend on this project. Draw/cut a simple square and triangle to create a cottage and roof. Use brown butcher paper for a gingerbread house look or colorful butcher paper for a whimsical look. Add a chimney, a door, windows, scalloped filigree around the roof, and plenty of candy-shaped accents. Hang a sign that says Home Sweet Home. 3-D Variation Use cotton batting on the rooftop, chimney top, windowsills, and along the ground to create the look of freshly fallen snow. Use giant plastic candy canes and homemade oversized lollipops and candies as accents. (See Creating 3-D Sweets section.) Attach a wrapped shoebox as a window planter with colorful tufts of tissue paper inside. Consider adding real candies inside and using them as rewards for bringing a Bible or a visitor to class. Bible connection: We are on a path to see Jesus. Press toward the sweet prize awaiting those who follow Him. Let us share the gospel message with everyone we meet along our journey. Wall 3: Lollipop Lane Create a Candy Land style pathway with colorful squares winding up and down the length of the wall. Use the path to help teach the books of the Bible. Either cut sixty-six small squares, one for each book of the Bible, and tightly wind them along the wall, or use eleven squares representing the division of Bible books. Write the individual books inside the squares, or attach a strip of Velcro to each square. Write the names of the books of the Bible on ping-pong balls to serve as game pieces and attach Velcro to the backs. Students can practice learning the books of the Bible by moving the balls to the appropriate squares. Along one side of the wall, attach a length of Velcro to secure the game pieces when not in use. 3-D Variation Decorate around the game board with 3-D candies. (See Creating 3-D Sweets section.) Hang candies from the ceiling. Bible connection: Taste and see what sweet treats Jesus has in store for His children love, joy, peace, forgiveness, freedom, and so much more. Share this good news with a friend! Tip: Reduce wall ideas to a bulletin board should shared spaces prohibit the use of entire walls. Wall 4: Sweet Spirit Soda Shoppe Create the look of an old-fashioned candy store and soda shop. Make a counter with colorful butcher paper cut into a long, counter-height rectangle. Add freehand vertical lines to create a wood plank look. Add a strip of black paper, slightly longer than the rectangle, as the countertop. Using posterboard, make and decorate a sign for your Sweet Spirit Soda Shoppe and create a menu (hot fudge sundaes, malts, shakes, sodas, root beer floats, ice cream cones, cupcakes, cookies, candies, and so on). Get creative and add cutouts/silhouettes of some of your menu items to the countertop. 3-D Variation Make a striped or polka-dotted awning and hang a sign from the ceiling. Write menu items on a decorative chalkboard. Gather material or a plastic tablecloth and attach to the countertop to simulate table skirting. Or for a counter, use a table/shelving unit with actual sodas, sundae glasses, and root beer mugs on top. Place a couple stools in front. Set out containers of candies, gumballs, and straws. For an added treat, bring a tabletop snow cone machine. This is an ideal place to keep prizes, snacks, and even candies that will be used in lessons throughout the quarter. 4

Bulletin Board Ideas Happy Birthday, Jesus Celebrate the birth of Jesus by creating a large cupcake from colored butcher paper in the middle of the board and smaller ones for each student around it. On the giant cupcake holder, put Happy Birthday, Jesus. On the students cupcake holders, put their names and birthdays. For a 3-D effect, crumple colored tissue paper for the icing. Add three different colored layers and a cherry on top of the large cupcake. Use one color of tissue paper, bunched into a ball for each of the smaller cupcakes. Note: Full-color and line art versions of bulletin boards, wall suggestions, and the New Birth Sundae poster are available. Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus On colorful paper plates, write things for which we can trust Jesus (peace, healing, joy, hope, salvation, provision, protection, and so on). Wrap the plates in cellophane so they look like candies, and mount them to the board. Use this board to stimulate discussion on how sweet it is to trust Jesus. I Jesus This is the ideal bulletin board for February. Create a board that says I heart Jesus with a giant red heart in place of the word. Put smaller pastel hearts around it with each student s name on a heart. For a 3-D effect, use actual Valentine heart-shaped boxes. New Birth Poster New Birth Sundae Mount the New Birth Sundae poster (trp) to the teaching wall. Review the biblical plan of salvation weekly. Explain how repentance, water baptism in Jesus name, and receiving the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in other tongues are the three components of salvation. Discuss how living a holy life is the cherry on top of our new birth sundae! I Jesus Attendance Attendance charts are provided with the activity papers. Each week as students arrive, have them glue a piece of candy to a square of their game board. Consider giving attendance prizes or acknowledgements at the end of the quarter. (Take into consideration students who cannot earn perfect attendance due to family situations and circumstances beyond their control and perhaps offer many ways to earn recognition awards.) Memory Work To help students retain Scripture in their long-term memory and apply it to daily living, students will study and commit verses to memory each week. The intent is not only to improve retention but provide understanding of Scripture and how it applies to life today. This is more than memorizing in the moment; this is planting in the heart! Memory work can be tracked using the memory chart provided with each student s activity papers. This quarter, students will color a gumball each week as they work on memorizing the unit Bible verses. Encourage students to chew on God s Word and stick with memorizing it, even outside of class. 5

Offering Collect offerings in a faux bubble gum machine. Spray paint a small (or size appropriate for the glass bowl) clay pot and tray glossy red. Turn the tray upside down, and hot glue the pot upside down on the tray. Hot glue a glass potpourri bowl/globe atop the pot. If possible, keep the offering in the globe for the whole quarter, allowing students to watch it grow week to week. Maintain a prop box with a variety of scarves, sashes, and robes which can be used in multiple Bible lessons. A crown, fake food, play money, baskets, goblets, and tablecloths are good to keep on hand too. Rotate props quarterly to keep them new and exciting for students. Volunteers Randomly selecting names as a way of choosing volunteers can help maintain order and expedite things in your class. For this quarter, purchase lollipops for each student and a couple extras for guests. Write students names and guest on the sticks. Stand them up in a cup or container so the names do not show. Select a lollipop whenever a volunteer is needed. Creating 3-D Sweets Lollipops: Hot glue pool noodles into a spiral shape. Cut a PVC pipe to your desired length of stick. Cut a hole in the bottom of the pool noodle lollipop just large enough to insert the PVC pipe. Secure with hot glue. Wrap the lollipop with colorful cellophane, secured with a pipe cleaner. For an added effect, first wrap the pool noodles with colorful tape going from one end to the other in a spiral fashion. A simpler option is to purchase large round Styrofoam discs or giant balloons, attach them to dowel rods, and cover them in colorful cellophane. Candies: For candy discs, glue two colorful plates together, and wrap in clear cellophane, secured at each end with a pipe cleaner. For puffy candies, use paper lanterns inside colorful cellophane. For gumdrops, cut the tops off gallon-sized milk jugs so they can stand upside down. Spray paint them fun colors. Dust with glitter spray. For candy kisses, cut the top sections off water/soda bottles and wrap with aluminum foil. Insert a piece of paper with sweet sayings or verses of Scripture. Cupcake: Purchase a colorful plastic flowerpot. Cut a pool noodle to the length that wraps around the top edge. Secure with hot glue. Cut additional lengths of pool noodles, one smaller than the next, to create an icing effect when hot glued atop one another. Add cotton batting to the last layer to cover the hole and a red balloon for the cherry on top. Hot glue pom-pom craft balls to the sides as sprinkles. Popsicles: Cut pool noodles into six-inch sections. Insert a large craft stick in one end and secure it with hot glue. Glue two together to create a double popsicle. Cotton candy: Roll white cardstock into a cone and attach to the opening of a gallon-sized milk jug. Wrap the jug in cotton batting. Spray paint to desired color. Ask a guest (youth, seniors, parents) to sign up for a week to prepare a seasonal or theme-related snack, craft, or game for the class. Often there are people within your own congregation who would like to help but do not know how they can. 6 Beyond the Classroom Plan a field trip to a local candy store, pastry shop, or bakery (even a grocery store bakery). Find out if there are times when the class can visit and get a behind-the-scenes look at cake, cupcake, or cookie decorating. Some candy stores and old-fashioned soda shops still make taffy, rock candy, ice cream, and fudge in-house. Call ahead to see if there are times when they offer public demonstrations. For the safety of staff and students, obtain signed parental permission forms before embarking on field trips. In addition, be certain at least two adults are always present with students.

Discuss the variety of candies and confectionary creations available, and then compare that to the variety of people God has created to sweeten the earth. Surely God considers it a treat for all the people of every nation to praise His name. We should consider it a treat to share the gospel with all people everywhere! Kids in Missions The focus this quarter is Asia. Ideas and information are included on page 8. Mount the map showing Asia and the list of missionaries (trp) on the teaching wall as a reminder to pray for this region. Throughout the quarter, optional activities are provided which focus on missions. Truth about God While the Bible is filled with narratives that we teach our students, it is God s story. It is all about Him, not the characters. Each lesson focuses on a truth about God, an attribute or principle that helps define or characterize God. While students do not memorize this statement, the lesson segments are written with this in mind and will support it. Teacher Resources Visit our website for valuable teacher resources. These include a child information form that allows you to collect pertinent information on each student, as well as the parent or guardian s permission to take and share the child s photo. Keep this signed form on file if you share pictures on Facebook or any other public site. Learn how to create a 3-D tree and what supplies are good to always have on hand. Go to and click on Teacher s Training. A teacher training article is included in the teacher resource packet. This piece is 3-hole punched for placement in your personal or classroom resource notebook. 7

Missionary Facts 14 missionary families or units residing or working in 24 countries/ ministries 24 nations 5,803+ churches and preaching points 442,486+ constituents 4.5 billion+ souls MK Fun Because of safety issues with many of our MKs in Asia, it is difficult for your students to send them a personalized letter. Here is a creative way to pray for them weekly. Go to your local Chinese take-out restaurant and get a traditional to go container and some chopsticks. Have your class create 12 prayer requests that they could pray over the MKs in this region (e.g., that they would be safe, that they would make friends easily, that they would learn the language quickly). Each week let a student pick out a prayer request with chopsticks (this will be a little tricky, yet fun) and have the class pray over this for all of the MKs in the region. Resources Check out these sites for additional facts and figures. the-world-factbook/index.html Visit for prayer tools and resources to help your students become missions minded. Contact Global Missions for ideas for a missions conference, media presentations, or to see if any missionaries from the Asia region are in your state this quarter; perhaps they could speak to your children. Contact Jason Crumpacker at Visit the website: K DS in M ss ons Asia Lynden & Kathy Shalm, Regional Director Key Project Many of the churches in the Asia region are not allowed to freely worship Jesus. They meet in homes and quietly conduct a service and softly sing praises to the Lord. New converts are baptized in the bathtub of the home. Many home churches will have a birthday cake present so if questioned by the police, they can say they are celebrating a birthday. After all, when one is saved we do celebrate them becoming a new creature! Consider having a special day of prayer for the persecuted church. Bring in a birthday cake, practice singing quietly, and have a student preach quietly. Take turns praying for churches that are persecuted in the Asia region. Pray for the missionaries who live undercover spreading the gospel. Pray for protection for families and that a great revival would happen in this area. Pray Pray for the protection of the missionaries, the national workers, and the church. This area has many underground churches where it is illegal to worship Jesus. Pray for more missionaries and AIM workers to come to this region. This region has the largest population group in the world but has the least amount of missionaries. Pray for doors to open to the gospel. Pray that the Lord will set up meetings for our pastors and missionaries to meet influential leaders in the area who will grow the church quickly. Pray for good health and strength for the missionaries. Due to different laws in this region, the air is filled with smog and pollution. Pray that their lungs and bodies would remain strong and free from disease. Pray for language interpreters for the missionaries, and also pray for the missionaries as they learn the language. The languages in this region are very difficult to learn since just the tone of your voice can change the meaning of the word. Pray for revival to flourish in the midst of persecution of the church. Special Focus The United Pentecostal Church has built an orphanage in Nepal. The New Beginnings of Nepal Children s Home was established in They currently house ten children. The home originally was created to be an adoption program between Nepal and the United States. After building the home and working with ten children, the government no longer allowed orphans to be adopted out of their country. New Beginnings continues to care for these ten orphans. They provide assistance for food, shelter, schooling, and medical and dental care. In 2015 a horrible earthquake shook the nation of Nepal. The New Beginnings home was not greatly affected by this national disaster. Your students can save their change this quarter to be collected on the last Sunday as a special financial hug to these children. All monies can be sent to: Mercy Nepal, C/O New Beginnings 2164 Southridge Drive, Tupelo, MS New Beginnings is an adoption agency in partnership with the UPCI. 8
