Editorial by Shannon Wilpitz Can You See It? Have you ever tried to teach a child to look at the back of his or her head using a hand-held mirror? I do not remember when I learned to do it, but it is so natural to me now that I do not give it a thought. That is until I cut my eleven-year-old son s hair this week and then told him to go look at it in the mirror. He stood in front of my bathroom mirror, turning his head side to side, straining to see as far around as he could. Looks good, he said. You didn t look at the back, I said, not wanting him to miss out on the great job I had done on all of his hair, even the part he could not see. But I can t see back there, he replied. I gave him the hand-held mirror, and he looked a bit confused. He knew enough from watching me fix my hair that he had to look into it, but he positioned his head directly between the hand-held mirror and the fixed mirror. I shifted his body, turned his head slightly, and told him where to focus his gaze. Oh, now I can see it, he said as he tilted his head to admire his new look... for about ten seconds. Looks good, he repeated and then ran off to play. I was left to sweep up the clumps of dirty blond hairs covering the floor, but I was smiling. A couple hours earlier, my son had gotten a haircut from a hair professional and returned home looking like someone cut his hair with lawn clippers. I immediately stopped what I was doing to make it right. Is that not what God does for us? We come to Him return to Him looking a bit of a mess, head hung low, not knowing how to fix things. God immediately gets to work making things right. However, we are sometimes like my son with the mirror, knowing God has straightened things out and saying, Looks good. All the while, we only see part of what He has done. We must take up the hand-held mirror of God s Word, let it shift our perspective, and redirect our focus to see the full picture of what God has done for us. This is a learned behavior that we have the privilege of teaching our students. We can show them how to see God s handiwork in their lives in ways they have never noticed before. There is more to discover of God and His plan than is visible on the surface. When our students see this for themselves, their perspectives will change and they will be able to access more of what God has for them. CUSTOMIZE THE CURRICULUM Downloadable resources for both the teacher s manual and the teacher s resource packet (trp) are available through access codes. The Beginner Teacher s Manual is available as PDF and DOC documents that can be customized to fit your teaching style, classroom setting, and schedule. Cut and paste, edit material out of or into the lesson, and make it your own using the following instructions. Downloadable Resources To access the PDF and DOCs of the teacher s manual online: 1. Visit and follow the instructions to access downloadable resources. 2. Use the download code: 3. The coupon code will be valid for one year from the date of the first lesson. Teacher s Resource Packet Downloadable Resources To access the reproducible items from the resource packet (trp), see the resource packet instruction sheet. If you have not purchased a packet, you can do so by going to or calling NOTE: Not all lessons offer downloadable resources. 2
Theme Development Redwood Forest This spring the Redwood Forest comes to life inside your (trp) = Teacher s Resource Packet classroom. Students will explore the breathtaking sights of ancient = Downloadable resource using redwoods towering over fern-covered canyons and scurrying code on TRP instruction sheet forest creatures. Amid this awe-inspiring setting, we will examine (ap) = Activity Paper the life of Christ and His deity as described in the New Testament Gospels. Students will discover the magnificence of God, surrounded with décor which invokes the splendor of His creation. God s attention to intricate detail provides all people the marvelous opportunity to access His presence and experience complete salvation through Jesus. Room Decoration Based on the size of your room(s) and the number of students typically in attendance, it may be necessary to limit decorations to the walls or bulletin boards to reserve floor space for students and class activities. For this reason decorations have been divided into two categories: basic and three-dimensional. Please keep in mind that not all 3-D suggestions require a great deal of space. So even if you are mainly interested in basic decorations, there may be something in the 3-D sections that would work in your room. Teaching Walls Wall 1: Instructional Wall This wall provides the writing board where you teach the Bible lesson. Remember to keep all important items eye level with students. Anything higher than the writing board should simply be for show, not for interaction or teaching. Mount the Kids in Missions map (trp) to this wall as a reminder to pray for our missionaries. Mount the New Birth poster (trp) to this wall, and refer to it each class period. Explaining Our Acronyms and Symbols BP = Bible Point MV = Memory Verse KiM = Kids in Missions SMP = Special Memory Passage Maintain a prop box with a variety of scarves, sashes, and robes that can be used in multiple Bible lessons. A crown, fake food, play money, baskets, goblets, and tablecloths are good to keep on hand. Rotate props quarterly to keep them new and exciting for students. Are you running short on time? Find a senior saint, teenager, or parent who wants to help, and ask them to make copies and cut out items for lessons. Together Time Find a challenging puzzle to assemble with your family, but secretly withhold one piece. Discuss how all the pieces must fit together to make the picture complete. The prophecies were like puzzle pieces, waiting for the final piece to be put into place. Next week we will discover the final piece. Word Time Unit 1 Bible Verse: Isaiah 9:6 Special Memory Passage: John 1:1 5, 14 Primary & Preteen Home Connection Grades 3 6 CUT HERE Avoid a Panic Attack If you occasionally loan out your teacher s manual or accidentally leave it at church, don t panic! Before the quarter begins, follow the process on page 2 to download the entire manual to your electronic device. You can check supplies, study, and focus your prayers with a few simple clicks on your device. Truth about God God promised to send a Savior. Bible Lesson Verse For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Family Activity Sign a Promise Pledge to one another. Promises may include doing extra chores for the week, complementing each other daily, giving extra displays of affection, praying together nightly, reading the Bible aloud, and so forth. 4 Wall 2: General Sherman Tree Bible Connection: General Sherman is not just another big tree. It is the largest living thing on the planet. Jesus was not just another man. He was the Creator of this planet and Savior of the world. He was God in flesh! NOTE: Reproducible theme art (trp) is available for you to copy onto transparency film, using the film designed for your copier. It is also available as a digital file for those who have access to computer projectors. Both are great options for enlarging art onto the wall, portable sheets or boards, or posterboard. Construct a mammoth-sized tree the entire width of the wall. Extend it all the way to the ceiling. Take pictures of students with their arms outstretched. Cut out their pictures and position them so it appears that students are linking hands, trying to span the tree. A line art version of the General Sherman Tree is available in the theme art extras. From the theme art extras, print the fact sheet about the General Sherman Tree, the largest living thing on earth. Post the information in the middle of the tree slice. 3-D Variation Crumple thick butcher paper to create the rough bark of the tree. Make a sign out of wood, foam board, or cardboard that reads, General Sherman Tree: Largest Living Thing on the Planet. Add tufts of leaves and branches at the very top to make it appear that the tree has burst through the ceiling. Wall 3: Chandelier Tree Bible Connection: Let this wall serve as a reminder that this world is not our home. We are just passing through. Create a drive-through tree. (Search online to get a look at the actual Chandelier Tree and many other drive-through trees in the Redwood Forest.) Accomplish the look by starting with a wide tree similar in construction to the General Sherman Tree (theme art extras ); however, cut a tunnel through the tree. 3-D Variation Use crumpled butcher paper to add depth. Make a sign that reads, Chandelier Tree: Drive- Through Tree. Add tufts of leaves and branches at the very top to make it appear that the tree has burst through the ceiling. Consider constructing the front end of a car or VW van with headlights peeking through the tree (theme art extras ). Wall 4: Hollow Log Hideaway Bible Connection: When the cares of this world seem to tower over us like trees of the Redwood Forest, remember that Jesus is our refuge. He is our hiding place. We are safe in Him. Tip: Reduce wall ideas to a bulletin board should shared spaces prohibit the use of entire walls. Create the look of a huge, hollowed-out tree by tearing, rather than cutting, a large, wall-sized circle out of brown butcher paper. The jagged edges will create a more authentic look. Repeat the procedure with black paper, but make the circle smaller so it fits inside the first, creating the illusion that the tree is hollow. Add cutouts of forest plants, animals, and insects. 3-D Variation Hang moss from the top of the hollowed tree. Tuck fake ferns and plants around the bottom of the tree. Position stuffed animals and plastic insects around it and birds perched atop it. 4
Bulletin Board Ideas Jesus Is TREE-mendous Make a simple poster-like bulletin board that says, Jesus Is TREE-mendous. Print a silhouette of a tall redwood tree to form the T in the word TREE-mendous. Stay Rooted in God s Word Create a board with a partial tree trunk featuring a large root system connected to the words God s Word. Above the tree trunk write, Stay Rooted In. Use this board to stimulate conversation as to what it takes to stay rooted in truth. Giants of the Faith Create a bulletin board dedicated to giants of the faith men and women who have blazed a trail of revival and helped spread the Apostolic message across the world. Choose whomever you want to place in your forest, and write their names on cutouts of trees. Spend a few minutes telling your students why you are adding each tree to the forest. Ask students if they want to be planted in faith, and add their names/trees. Pray that God would continue to raise up boys and girls who will also become giants of faith. New Birth Poster: Grow to Go Mount the New Birth poster (trp) to the teaching wall. Review the biblical plan of salvation weekly. Explain how repentance, water baptism in Jesus name, and receiving the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in other tongues are the three components of salvation. Discuss how growing in God leads us to living a holy life. Note that reproducible versions of bulletin boards, wall suggestions, and the New Birth poster are available. Stay Rooted In God s Word Grow to Go Temperance Faith Longsuffering Gentleness Meekness Joy Love Peace Baptism Goodness in Jesus Name Receive the Holy Ghost Pray Repentance Find Faith in Christ Attendance: Avenue of the Giants Attendance charts are provided in the activity papers. Post these on a wall near the entrance. As students attend each week, they will attach a sticker to a mile marker on the Avenue of the Giants map. Consider giving attendance prizes or acknowledgements at the end of the quarter, but please be sensitive to students who may not be able to attend class due to circumstances beyond their control. Provide opportunities for those students to add a sticker for class participation or examples of Christian character. In this manner, all students will be included, regardless of attendance. Memory Work To help students retain Scripture in their long-term memory and apply it to daily living, each week they will study and commit Scriptures to memory. In addition to improving retention, this method provides a deeper understanding of Scripture and how it applies to life today, planting the Word in their hearts. This quarter, as students work on memorizing Scripture, they will color in a tree ring on the memory charts included as the last page in the activity paper pads. Encourage students to grow in God s Word and make Scripture memorization a lifelong practice. 5
Offering Collect offerings in a hiking boot. Consider splitting the class into two teams, using two boots, to see who can fill their boot by the end of the quarter. Or give one boot to another class for a friendly competition between classrooms. If your pastor approves, in conjunction with Kids in Missions, consider collecting an offering for H.O.M.E. International in Guatemala, a children s home sponsored by the men s ministry (Apostolic Man) of the United Pentecostal Church International. For more information, see Ask a guest (youth, seniors, parents, and so on) to sign up for a week to prepare a seasonal or theme-related snack, craft, or game for the class. Often there are people within your own congregation who would like to help but do not know how they can. Volunteers When choosing volunteers, randomly selecting names can help maintain order and expedite processes during class sessions. This quarter cut pinecones (theme art extras ) from construction paper and write students names on them. Write Guest on a few extra pinecones. Place all the pinecones in a basket. Virtual Field Trip Take students on a virtual field trip to the California Redwood Forest. Bring a laptop, and scroll through photos and videos of the towering trees. As you wind through the Avenue of the Giants, remark about the marvelous Creator as evidenced by His wondrous creations. Activity Papers As an integral part of each lesson, the activity papers help students understand and retain biblical principles. Within each lesson the teacher will be directed when and how to use the activity paper. Sometimes they will be used during an opening activity, as a prayer tool, or as an aid for memory work. Other times they may be used as an accompaniment to the Bible lesson or to reinforce the life application. Make certain each student has an activity paper. Encourage students to take their activity papers home and refer to the lesson concepts often. 6
Home Connection In each activity paper, at the top of the back page, is a URL address for parents to take advantage of our Home Connection. Review questions, activities, and memory work are provided for athome discussion. Be sure to show this to parents when they pick up their children. This piece is also available in the resource packet for teachers to copy and send home with students. Kids in Missions The focus this quarter is Central America and the Caribbean. Ideas and information are included on page 8. Mount the map showing Central America, the Caribbean, and the list of missionaries (trp) on the teaching wall as a reminder to pray for this region. Throughout the quarter, optional activities are provided that focus on missions. Truth about God While the Bible is filled with narratives that we teach our students, it is God s story. It is all about Him, not the characters. Each lesson focuses on a truth about God, an attribute or principle that helps define or characterize God. While students do not memorize this statement, the lesson segments are written to support it. Teacher Resources Visit for valuable training resources. These include a child information form that allows you to collect pertinent information on each student, as well as the parent or guardian s permission to take and share the child s photo. Keep this signed form on file if you share pictures on Facebook or any other public site. Learn how to create a 3-D tree and what supplies are good to always have on hand. A teacher training article is included in the teacher resource packet. This piece is 3-hole punched for placement in your personal or classroom resource notebook. K DS in M ss ons Central America/Caribbean David and Yonda Schwarz, Regional Director Key Project The Central America/Caribbean region is made up of three sub-regions. Each sub-region celebrates one major conference each year to minister to the pastors and their wives with preaching, fellowship, and training. A special camp for pastors children is provided at each conference as well. The children enjoy fun and friendships as well as teaching and training. These conferences need assistance with expenses. Consider taking a special offering to help this region with their conference expenses so that more families can attend. Host a party with a Latin flavor, complete with piñatas, music, and traditional food (all donations). Sell tickets to attend. Charge for each piñata hit. Set a large collection jar on a table in the center and ask the people to fill it. Print cards with dollar amounts, ask attendees to draw a card, and then they pay the amount on the card (set a deadline for payment so they do not have to pay the day of the party). Send a note from your team telling what you did with a church check to Global Missions. Note this account number: GMGP Pray Pray for protection for the missionaries, the national workers, and the church. The area is troubled with political unrest, rebel armies, and the threat of hurricanes and damaging weather. Pray for financial aid for printing tracts, building churches, buying Bibles, building Bible schools, and support for our missionaries. Pray for doors to open to the gospel. Superstition, witchcraft, and voodoo present challenges, but God will overcome! Pray for good health and strength for the missionaries who travel into rain forests and deep into the jungles, often meeting in unsanitary buildings that carry the threat of disease. Missionaries carry a heavy workload to meet the needs of widespread churches. Pray for language interpreters for the missionaries. Also pray for the missionaries as they learn the language. Pray for revival to flourish in Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean islands. Special Focus The United Pentecostal Church has built an orphanage in Guatemala! There are over 370,000 orphans in Guatemala alone. In 2011, H.O.M.E. International became registered with the Guatemalan government. It has officially opened its doors to ten new members. Missionary Lynne Jewett is the president of the orphanage, with help from missionary Brad Thompson, AIMer Amber Corey as Director, and many nationals.
