In 1740 Nathan Cole heard George Whitfield preach in Weathersfield, Connecticut and recorded these thoughts in his journal:... and my hearing him preach gave me a heart wound; by God s blessing my old foundation was broken up, and I saw that my righteousness would not save me;.... In God s pursuit of us to make us his own he must turn our eyes from all other foundations and treasures. We must see him as our only hope. This may come through some personal set back or loss or even through a success that leaves us still empty. A thing may be taking place in your life right now, something that you would remove with a word if you could, but might be the thing God has appointed to inflict your life with a faithful wound and break up old and faulty foundations. In our service today we worship the one who is the eternal rock who alone can keep us through this world and all worlds to come. Use the elements of the service to train your faith on him and away from foundations of sand. Bill Douglas, Pastor WELCOME VISITORS We are glad to have you as our guest! As we seek to bring glory to our Father together, we welcome you to join any or all of the events and ministry activities at St. Andrews. We invite you to worship God with us, to find us as a place for encouragement and fellowship, and to become a part of this church. We invite you to tell us who you are and let us get to know you, as you get to know and become more familiar with us. The back of the program has the office phone number and addresses for the staff. God has moved you to come to worship him.
Songs of Ascent November 5, 2017 Preaching: Bill Douglas Leading in Worship: Mike Stewart Come Ye Sinners Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity, joined with power. Come ye needy, come, and welcome, God's free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Chorus: I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Saviour, O, there are ten thousand charms! Come, ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall; If you tarry 'til you're better, You will never come at all. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness He requireth is to feel your need of Him. (Chorus) Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; pleads the merit of His blood. Venture on Him; venture wholly, let no other trust intrude. (Chorus) My Jesus, I Love Thee My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou; if ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now. I love Thee because Thou has first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary s tree. I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow; if ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now. I ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death, And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath; And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow, if ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now. In mansions of glory and endless delight, I ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright; I ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow; if ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now.
How Deep the Father s Love for Us How deep the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the chosen One bring many sons to glory. Behold the Man upon the cross, my sin upon His shoulders. Ashamed I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything no gifts, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom! In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died the wrath of God was satisfied; For every sin on Him was laid here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, Sin's curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death this is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home here in the pow r of Christ I'll stand.
Call to Worship (From Isaiah 55 ) Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. The Lord be with you And also with you. Prayers of Invocation O Sovereign Lord, Redeemer of your people and Lord of all nations, we gather to praise your name. You who are our Mighty Rock sustain us in our weakness and through all of the uncertainties of our days. By your covenant love we ask that you subdue our hearts so that our affections belong to you above all things. As the only Lawgiver in Zion we pray that you rule over us and defend us against the enemies of our souls. Remember your ancient promises to extend your favor to all who call on the name of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Be pleased with our worship, strengthen our hands and cause your glory to be displayed through your church. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Amen
Hymn # 101 Come Thou Almighty King Come, Thou Almighty King, help us Thy name to sing, Help us to praise. Father, all glorious, O er all victorious, come, and reign over us, ancient of Days. Come, Thou incarnate Word, gird on Thy mighty sword, Our prayer attend: come, and Thy people bless, And give Thy word success; Spirit of holiness, on us descend. Come, holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour: thou who Almighty art, Now rule in every heart, and ne er from us depart, Spirit of power. To Thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be Hence evermore. Thy sov reign majesty May we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore. Prayers of Confession Promise of Pardoning Grace (from Psalm 103 ) Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being praise his Holy Name. Praise the Lord, my soul and forget not all his benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism Q. 1 What is your only comfort, in life and in death? That I am not my own, but belong - body and soul, in life and in death - to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. Hymn 689 Be Still My Soul Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change, He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav nly friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake to guide the future, as He has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below. Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart, and all is darkened in the vale of tears, Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart, Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears. Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay From His own fullness all He takes away. Be still, my soul: the hour is hast ning on when we shall be forever with the Lord. When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past All safe and blessed we shall meet at last. Offering (At this time, the Pre K4 and Kindergarten children are invited to meet their leaders at the back of the sanctuary for Children s Church.)
