David Smith The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. MANNA, OUR WEDNESDAY MEAL, FELLOWSHIP AND LEARNING TIME RESUMES SEPTEMBER 10 AT 6 P.M. CHANCEL CHOIR PRACTICE WILL RESUME WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 AT 7:30 P.M. CRAIG AND CARA GARRISON, OUR CHURCH MISSIONARIES, WILL BE HERE ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14. They will be leading an all ages Sunday school class in fellowship hall beginning at 9:15 a.m. and sharing more in worship. Come hear about the important work they are doing to support the church in Myanmar. CHURCH SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH RESUMES SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14. All classes will meet together that day at 9:15 a.m. in fellowship hall for a light breakfast and to hear from Craig and Cara Garrison. ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 AT 6:30 P.M. THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION OF THE RECENT GENERAL ASSEMBLY in fellowship hall. The Rev. Andy Gerhart, a presbytery commissioner, and the Rev. Matt Skolnik, who went as an observer, will be on hand to share insights on the assembly. Matt Skolnik travels annually to the Middle East and understands the concerns of both the Israelis and the Palestinians. The emphasis for this evening will be on the divestment vote. Pastor David will schedule a later session to discuss the issues raised by the votes on same sex marriage. JOIN THE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY WORKDAY ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20. Richard Ratzlaff has arranged a day for our church to help out Habitat as it finishes a home. You can work morning, afternoon or both. Water and lunch are provided. Types of work could include putting up siding, painting inside walls, installing trim around windows & doors, etc. To work the morning shift, meet at the church at 8:00 a.m. (youth and their families will gather at 8:30 a.m.) and carpool to the site. If you want to go in the afternoon, plan to arrive about 1 p.m. at the house. The house is located on Braun Road, North of Belpre, a couple 100 yards west of the intersection of Braun Road and Veto Road. (Take Rt. 7 South out of Marietta, turn right on Veto Road and go about 4 miles on Veto Road and then left on Braun Road.) ENVELOPES MARKED OPENING NEW DOORS ARE AVAILABLE NEAR THE SANCTUARY ENTRANCE for contributions to the capital campaign fund. Please write capital campaign on your check.

6 IT S TIME TO UPDATE YOUR CURRENT INFORMATION! We need your help to insure the church database is current! Regardless of whether you have changed addresses, phone numbers, or stayed the same, we would like everyone to fill out the First Presbyterian Church Update Form with addresses, home and cell numbers, s, and birthdays. Return it to the church office or place it in the offering plate. Copies of the forms were mailed with the July Presby Packet and are available near the church entrances. HAVE YOU SCHEDULED YOUR PHOTO SESSION FOR OUR NEW DIRECTORY? There are two more dates available and the sign-up sheets are on the portable bulletin board at the Wooster Street entrance. Choose from: Wed., Sept. 10 from 11 AM - 2 PM and 5 PM - 8 PM or Thurs., Oct. 2 from 10 AM - 2 PM and 6 PM - 9 PM. There is no sitting fee and a variety of packages and individual items will be available at reasonable prices. TAKE A PRAYER SHAWL TO BLESS SOMEONE. These beautiful creations, crafted by dedicated volunteers, can be found in a cabinet in the Golden Circle Room by the 4 th Street entrance. Please take a shawl to someone who is moving through a time of great challenge or who has experienced a special joy. If you gift a shawl, please sign the register which is located with the shawls. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SIGNED UP TO HOST SIP N CHAT! Bob makes coffee and beverages. Only simple snacks need to be provided and put out in preparation for the end of the service. If you are able to volunteer for any future dates you can sign up on the bulletin board near the Wooster Street entrance. Thank you! THE SCOTLAND TRIP ITINERARY IS SET: THE TRAVEL DATES ARE MAY 25 TO JUNE 3, There is a brochure on the table at the top of the main stairs. The brochure provides fuller information about costs and due dates for deposits and payment. You may pick up a booking form in the church office. Completed booking forms and first payment of $395 to First Presbyterian are due by September 22. GOD S GARDEN IS AVAILABLE! We invite any of our expert gardeners who find they have too much produce to use or preserve at home to share it with others. Bring it to the church and place it on the God s Garden table by the coat rack leading into fellowship hall. SAVE THE DATE (SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25) AND DONATE SOME RUMMAGE ITEMS! Plans are being made for a rummage sale in fellowship hall to benefit our youth program. Watch for more details. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN FINDING A WALKING CLUB, the Marietta Y is organizing a 45 minute Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime Walking Bunch, free to community members. The group will meet at 12:15 pm under the Putnam Street Bridge to walk the Bike Path together. (Walking will take place in Marietta College s Dyson Baudo Recreation Center on inclement days, also starting at 12:15 pm). JOIN GOD'S GIRLS in our next Bible study, Nehemiah: A Heart That Can Break, by Kelly Minter! Nehemiah's heart was so broken for those in need that he left the comfort of his Persian palace to help them. This study challenges women to let God break their hearts for a hurting, lost world and move them in compassion to lead people to Jesus. Nehemiah is a 7-week study that includes 7 video sessions and real-life ways to put feet to your faith. Are you ready to let God break your heart for a hurting, lost world and move you in compassion to be the hands and feet of Jesus? Workbooks will be $13. The Presbyterian Group will meet on Wed. beginning on September 17 for 7 consecutive Wednesday s from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Methodist Group will begin Sept. 14 and end November 9 (we will not meet Emmaus weekends) from 5 to 7. 7 What are church officers and what do they do? The deacons help us care for each other and others in a variety of ways. One area of focus is worship. The deacons 1) Prepare communion 2) Arrange and share the donated flowers following worship 3) Insure the sound system has an operator on Sundays 4) Organize the ushering teams You can help the deacons with these worship responsibilities by: 1) Offering to help with communion preparation 2) Suggesting someone who should receive flowers and volunteer to deliver them 3) Volunteering to usher by calling Nancy McCartney at ) Learning how to run the sound system.
