1 Renewing Peru through the power of the Gospel. BULLETIN / VOL 12 / ISSUE 1 JUNE 10 New Church Plant in Trujillo One thing that has become increasingly clear to the Peru Mission team over the past few years is the need for a downtown church in Trujillo. A central location that would serve as the primary focus of our outreach to university students, professionals, government officials, and the arts community could provide exponential growth, while at the same time be a resource church for our other congregations. We have always had a strong emphasis on parish ministry in the outlying areas, but the university ministry, language institute, and even our seminary have struggled at times to develop the kind of connection that we desire with a local church. The Larco congregation filled part of this role in the past because it was the church located most closely to downtown Trujillo, however the building s location still seemed somewhat distant from the city s center in the eyes of most students and professionals. live. A central church, however, draws from many parts of the city. It requires more hard work and ingenuity to build interconnected lives. Small groups provide a sense of community that would otherwise be lacking, and also create an environment that facilitates evangelism. In February we began organizing a new church, called Iglesia Presbiteriana Cristo Rey (Christ the King Presbyterian Church), that actually is in downtown Trujillo. For eight weeks we held informal services on Sunday mornings in our mission house where we taught a series of studies outlining what it will look like for us to serve Christ in central Trujillo. Trujillo is a strange mixture of elegant, colonial Spanish culture and abandoned adobe shops yet with the growing hustle and bustle of a globally connected large urban center. It has been at the heart of Peru s economic boom for the past several years, and yet it is a place still surrounded by heart-wrenching poverty. Add to the mix 12 universities and many technical schools that attract large numbers of students from all the northern provinces and you have a strategic location for gospel ministry and what should be a church planting hub for all of north and central Peru. We are very pleased with how things have gone so far. Our core group consists of college students, young professionals, and young families, all of whom are enthusiastic about their faith and eager to share it with others. We have numerous musicians in the group, several officer candidates, and we ve also welcomed many visitors. We recently found a reasonably priced auditorium in the downtown area that we will rent for the remainder of the year and, Lord willing, next year as well. We have a few options but nothing is official yet. For those who can help, we do have a great need for funds for Bibles and evangelistic and discipleship materials as well as support for renting the auditorium. Please be praying for Cristo Rey and for our witness to students, professionals, and others. If you can give toward our Bible and Literature Fund or the Trujillo Pastoral Support Fund please contact Wes Baker (wesbaker@perumission.org) or Brad Ball (bball@ perumission.org). In addition to Sunday morning meetings, we also held training sessions on Wednesday nights for small group leaders. On April 18, we launched six groups and hope to start others over the next few months. In a downtown church, due to the urban dynamic, small groups are even more important than they are in parish churches for building and maintaining a sense of community, and for providing a context for evangelism. In a parish church, everyone lives near each other in one neighborhood. Their lives are interconnected because of where they SUPPORT FOR ALL MINISTRIES TO: Christian Missionary Society P. O. 2 MINISTRIES Serving Señor Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame Luke 14:21 Above: Señor Jose Plasencia Cruz consults with Dr. Mitchum and Wes Baker during the IPC Memphis medical campaign. We have witnessed a dramatic transformation in the past few years of the Wichanzao neighborhood: single story houses have now grown to two or three stories, the dirt streets are paved, mud bricks are replaced with fired bricks and concrete. Yet many people in our neighborhood still suffer great poverty. One such gentleman, Jose Plasencia Cruz, is 81 and lives in a small room with a family that is not his own. Jose has numerous serious health conditions, but he manages to work and earn enough for basic necessities. He has no family to help him. Recently, through the persistence of the Wichanzao church diaconate and the medical staff and fellows who work at the clinic, Jose has had two operations which we hope will dramatically improve his condition. He is a needy person who has lived most of his life far from God. We hope that through our witness to him in word and deed he will find his way to the great wedding feast Jesus speaks of in Luke 14. The clinic continues to serve men and women like Señor Jose throughout the Wichanzao community. God loves them because they are made in his image. He is concerned about both their physical needs as well as their spiritual ones. In our work we are seeking to demonstrate the healing and hope that Christ brings. In accordance with this goal, we are very pleased to announce the arrival of our new doctor, Julton Tomanguillo, who joined the staff in February. Julton is from Moyobamba, in a part of Peru known as the Upper Jungle, and has been an active member in our church since his arrival in Trujillo to study medicine. He is married to a former Peru Mission Fellow, Julie Rogers. In addition to his skills as a physician, Julton brings with him a strong desire to serve the people of Wichanzao. If you are interested in donating specifically to help people like Señor Jose, we have recently established a fund with Christian Missionary Society that we are calling the Medical Relief Fund. Your gifts to the Medical Relief Fund will pay for surgeries and other procedures for patients who are truly in need. Please prayerfully consider making a gift to this ministry. Check out our clinic blog for more frequent updates: Ricardo Hernández Leading his Team in ArÉvalo P astor Ricardo Hernández moved back to Trujillo in mid-february. He is the new pastor in Arévalo after serving for two years as a missionary in rural Celendin. He previously served in the Larco church where he was the minister for five years. Ricardo and his wife Dani have two daughters (Dorothy and Marta) and are expecting their third child later this year. the church recruits volunteers to help out in a summer school for children of the neighborhood to help reinforce the previous year s studies and prepare them for next year. This, along with English classes taught at the church by Peru Mission Fellows, has provided a tremendous boost for the youth ministry. Arévalo clearly has the strongest youth program of all of our churches. Ricardo s ministry is noted for his attention to pastoral care. Ever faithful in visiting both church members and neighbors, as well as developing strong relationships with young people, we are convinced that God has great things in store for Arévalo through his ministry. Ricardo s team includes Pablo Quiroz, who serves as youth pastor, and Pastor Percy Padilla who ministers primarily in an extension work in the nearby neighborhood, Parque Industrial. Arévalo is a place with great potential. The church is doing well, and attendance holds strong at 60 to 70 people. We are very excited about the all of the doors the Lord is opening for future ministry in that neighborhood. Please pray for Pastor Ricardo s preaching and discipleship ministries, and his neighborhood visitation. Pray also for Pablo Quiroz and the youth ministry, as well as for Pastor Percy and the extension work in Parque Industrial. Current needs in Arévalo include additional funds for Pastoral Support. If you can help financially in Arévalo, please contact Brad Ball (bball@perumission.org) or Wes Baker (wesbaker@perumission.org). 3 PERU MISSION BULLETIN / 3 IN OCTOBER 2009, the Lord greatly blessed Peru Mission by enabling us to rent a beautiful house in the historic center of Trujillo for our office headquarters. Although we have only occupied the building for a few months, it has already proven to be a great attraction for church members and friends, providing a place to hang out, develop new friendships, practice English, and much more, all in a kingdom oriented context. Casa San Agustín or Casa Amarilla ( The Yellow House ), as it is also known, is a spacious building with a large foyer, library, lots of office space upstairs, and a spacious garden in the back. It is also home to the Corner Café, a popular spot for people to buy an af- ternoon snack, and spend time in conversation. Everyday people come in and out of the building for pastoral meetings, English classes, counseling, and just to visit with friends. Casa San Agustín has proven especially useful to the downtown church, Cristo Rey. The church, which began meeting in February, was able to use the back garden space for its sanctuary while looking for an auditorium to use for Sunday services. It has also been convenient for other church meetings as well, such as the ladies group, university ministry, and cell group leader training. Our new mission headquarters, Casa San Agustín. On weekdays, Casa San Agustín is full of students from SALI who practice their English conversation skills, and build friendships. While SALI teachers often have discussions about spiritual issues, this building provides the additional benefit of close proximity to one or more pastors who can answer questions or provide counseling. We are so thankful for our office space in downtown Trujillo. Please pray that God would continue to use this building to advance His kingdom in Peru. Teaching English, Building Community Every weekday afternoon at Casa San Agustín, small groups of people pull their chairs into a circle in our classrooms, garden, and library to begin discussions of everything from political views to favorite meals to cultural traditions. SALI classes began at Casa San Agustín in January after a six-month hiatus. We are offering three levels of conversation class (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced) every hour in the afternoon from 3 7 P.M. The majority of our students are in college, but the classes also attract young teenagers, middle-aged professionals, and even a few grandmothers. Many of the students who come to our classes at SALI are seeking to improve their career opportunities; speaking English is a valuable job skill in Peru. While there are several other institutions in Trujillo that teach English, Jose Salaverry with his intermediate conversation class in SALI. As with all of our work here in Trujillo, our goal is to show the love of Christ through our actions, attitude, and words in our language classes. SALI s strength is in our teachers, all of whom are native English speakers. Our emphasis on conversation means that our students not only practice speaking English but also develop confidence speaking in public and expressing their opinions in a convincing way. SALI is a great place to build relationships and encourage interest in Christ and his church. Since the classes are conversation-style, teachers easily become friends with their students, while the students feel comfortable discussing religious topics. Since the classes are in Casa San Agustín, we are able to refer our students to one of the pastors for spiritual guidance and support. Teachers often invite their students to come to our weekly church meetings on Sunday mornings, or to be part of the university ministry (SUSA) on Friday nights. As with all of our work here in Trujillo, our goal is to show the love of Christ through our actions, attitude, and words in our language classes.

4 E C O N O M I C D E V E L O P M E N T & M I N I S T RY U P D AT E S A Sinergia client displaying the vegetables that she sells at the Wichanzao market. Economic Development is one of Peru Mission s five strategic ministry departments, along with Church Planting and Leadership Development, Reformed Biblical Seminary, University Ministry, and Medical Ministry. As we work to advance the Kingdom of God and build Christian community in Trujillo, poverty is one of our most conspicuous enemies. We are trying to address this problem head on. We have started businesses that both provide work for church members as well as a context in which men and women can be discipled and learn to approach their job as a vocation from God. Four years ago we started a micro-finance program called Sinergia which currently helps over 400 women in and around TRANSFORMING FINANCES, TRANSFORMING LIVES Wichanzao with small, low-interest loans. These loans allow the women to open or augment small businesses, providing them with a living and a way to support their children. Another of our projects is the Parish Woodshop where young men are trained to work with their hands as skilled carpenters, run a small business, and be men of character. A third economic ministry that we had a hand in starting is Peru Paper. This rapidly growing business is owned by Grace Bateman and has grown out of a project that she started as an intern with Peru Mission. Peru Paper employs ladies connected with our churches to make beautiful handmade greeting cards Another Sinergia shows off the lunch offerings at her small restaurant. from recycled paper. The women are able to work a very flexible schedule at home while caring for their families, all the while making a significant wage to supplement the family s income. Peru Paper cards are sold on the internet as well as in retail stores in several states. They recently garnered national attention when they were included in gift bags for Hollywood stars at the Oscars. For more information on how you can help with any of these Economic Development projects, please contact Chris Bolton (chrisbolton@perumission.org). More information is also available at or Seminario Bíblico Reformado SBR is enjoying its new facilities. We moved to our new mission house in October and began classes immediately. During the spring and summer sessions (i.e., October through March) we have taught Old Testament Biblical Theology, Homiletics, and Introduction to the New Testament. July of this year to teach a class. We are also pleased with a new addition to the seminary team. Scott Davenport is a 2007 graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte and will be joining us (Lord willing) in 2011 as Registrar and Dean of the Trujillo campus. Having a missionary who can devote himself full time to running the seminary will be a great help. there is truly a great need for theological education in peru. With Bill Bradford serving as Sr. Minister at Lawndale Presbyterian in Tupelo, MS, and Allen Smith and Alonzo Ramirez in the US for home assignments, we found ourselves very short-handed. Thankfully, Alonzo has returned to Peru and has resumed teaching classes. Bill also expects to visit in June or We currently have six students in Trujillo, fifteen in Cajamarca, fifteen in Lima, and approximately ten in Amazonas. In May we also began teaching classes in the city of Moyobamba in the upper jungle region. There is truly a great need for theological education Pastor Wes Baker teaches a seminary class at Casa San Agustín. in Peru. Please pray for the Lord to give the professors stamina for their grueling travel schedule. Pray also that the Lord would open the door for more students to come study with us. Our two greatest needs in the seminary at this moment are scholarships for new candidates for the ministry and donations for our library fund. If you can help with either of these please contact Wes Baker (wesbaker@ perumission.org).

5 PERU MISSION BULLETIN / 5 University Ministry Resumes On Friday, March 5, we re-launched our university ministry, Sociedad Universitaria San Agustín (SUSA) at our new ministry center, Casa San Agustín. Since then SUSA has continued to gain momentum as a place to explore and experience the Gospel of Christ through our large group meeting on Friday, through small groups, and through one-onone appointments. For our large groups, we typically gather to play some icebreaker type games, sing a few songs, study God s Word, discuss how to apply it to our lives and then hang out, enjoying some refreshments as well as time with each other. We are encouraged by a strong group of young Peruvians who have committed to be a part of SUSA leadership and make SUSA an open and inviting place to bring their friends. We are currently going through a series about learning how to relate to God, ourselves, others and finding our calling in the world. We have had good interaction and feedback as we ve looked at these important themes from a biblical perspective. We are gearing up to have small groups begin meeting on several campuses as universities begin a new semester. They will meet in the afternoons during breaks between classes. We are also in the process of placing interns on campuses that will work directly helping to lead these small groups and building relationships with students. Currently, the Lord is providing excellent oneon-one appointments with students. It s a privilege to get to know these young leaders and help them to orient their lives around the gospel. One specific Peruvian leader named Jaime Avellaneda is very gifted at one-on-one appointments and has been able to devote a lot of time to this exciting part of our ministry. Please pray with us that our university ministry will continue to grow and be an integral part of fulfilling our vision. Our prayer is that we will grow in our ability to reach students for Christ and equip them to serve our Lord and Savior. Hopefully through these talented young professionals, we will be able to plant missional churches and develop transformational ministries as the Spirit cultivates in them a love for the gospel, the kingdom, and the church. RAISING UP GODLY LEADERS Above: Sharing ideas at a recent discussion time during a SUSA meeting. The men of the Parish woodshop from left to right: Marden, Javier, Alfonzo, Norvil, and Geronimo. Peru Mission s vision is to plant missional churches, equip national leaders, and develop transformational institutions. The second of these three goals is instrumental to fulfilling the other two. Capable and godly Peruvian leaders are the key to both growing churches and growing institutions. Leadership development cannot take a one size fits all approach, because there are many different types of leaders needed within a Christian community: pastors, teachers, nurses, doctors, businessmen and women, mothers, fathers, and more. All need to be trained to live out their particular calling in obedience to their Heavenly Father. While leadership development must be multifaceted, the gospel should always be the unifying center. The Lord is raising up gospelcentered leaders among us who know him, know themselves, and know his world. Our prayer is to see more leaders with discerning minds, warm hearts, and strong hands to love and serve God and his world. Over the past year we have begun to take a more systematic approach to leadership development within our ministries. For example, the men who work at the Parish Woodshop have a daily Bible study where they learn what it means to be godly fathers, husbands, and businessmen. They are learning to live out the gospel as they make beautiful furniture, live in community with one another, and serve their families. In fact, four of our craftsmen have taken on diaconal roles at the downtown church Criso Rey and are eager to begin officer training in the next couple of months. Similarly, workers in the clinic are being prepared and trained to serve Christ in a ministry of healing and are taking on more responsibilities in administration. Another leadership training opportunity in the central church is a Wednesday night meeting where we average about 20 people for community group training. At these meetings we laugh, sing, share, pray, and study God s word together as we look into the nature of Christian community. These men and women are learning to be intentional about forming friendships and being witnesses for Christ in the city. Their efforts are not only bringing the gospel to unbelievers and directing them to Christ and his Church, but are also giving them valuable experience as leaders in the body of Christ. We are so thankful for the many energetic servants that God is forming to plant missional churches and to develop transformational institutions in and for northern Peru.
