So I have officially sent her message! You are probably wondering who is this Betsy! Well, most of the youth of the parish will know who Betsy is she was one of the members of the 2014 Totus Tuus Team. You would think that Washington DC being as big as it is you could miss seeing people who live in the same town. Well, one fine afternoon, I was walking back home from the Library and I heard a woman say Hey, Fr. Vince. Since I only have priests in my class, I knew it wasn t one of them. I turned around to see Betsy Palmer standing there and smiling right at me. We had a great conversation that afternoon and she wanted me to tell everyone back home Hi from Betsy! Her job is in the World Youth Day department it s her job to help coordinate logistics etc. for the Americans attending World Youth Day in Krakow Poland (which) is currently going on this weekend. From youth ministry in Nebraska to the world stage in Krakow amazing! Lots of work and responsibility! In today s Gospel, we are reminded to be rich in the things that matter to God and not so much the things of this world. For what will it matter to gain the whole world and not invest in the next? One of the greatest witnesses of faith that we have is our youth. Please pray for them not only the ones on pilgrimage to Krakow, but our own youth. May their witness to the faith be inspiring to lead others to Christ. May they know of the love that God has for them and the great witness we can be to one another in this life in preparation for the next. With Deacon Dan leaving, we are in need of some new people to help out after Masses on the weekends in the sacristy. This job doesn t take a great deal of time, but is much needed, and can be a great way to share the talent part of our call to be stewards of the church. Please meet with Dan the first weekend of August, or call the parish office to volunteer ( ). All sacristans are asked to see Deacon Dan after Masses the first weekend in August, the 6th & 7th, for a brief meeting. Pr_-B[ptism[l Cl[ss Parents wishing to have their infant baptized must take a class prior to the baptism at St. Agnes. Classes are held quarterly, and the next one is scheduled for Sunday, August 7th at 1pm. if you wish to attend, please call the parish office ( ) to preregister. Please arrange babysitting for your child. Fr D_sks St. Agnes School has acquired new desks, courtesy of the 2015 Premiere Event. We will be disposing of our old desks. Sadly for us, but happily for the priesthood and the greater Church, Deacon Dan Gilbert will be leaving us to attend seminary at St. Meinrad, Indiana in mid -August. Hardly sounds like mercy! Unlike some contemporary rich folks, there is no indication of lying, stealing, or cheating in Jesus parable. The rich man made a living, not a killing. Why does Jesus name him fool? First, because of presumption. Five times in nine verses, the rich man declares, I shall. God s not in charge here, I am! Second, selfishness four times, my/myself. No God, no neighbor; he talks to himself, about himself: my possessions, my productivity, my plans! So, instead of chasing treasure for ourselves, Jesus and Pope Francis Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us grow rich in what matters to God (12:21), namely, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Give food, drink, clothing, and healing; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead. This attitude is akin to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have thought: Why, of course he d want to find a way to preserve his good fortune for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It s exactly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this common wisdom makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that much harder to hear today. Perhaps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. We will not achieve the future security we pursue, and we will lose the present moment in the chase. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TRE@SURES FROM OUR TR@DITION Sometimes the treasures of art can provide us with clues about traditions. Take, for example, the miter, the conical hat with lappets, or back-flaps that fall to the shoulders. This cap is worn by bishops in the Catholic West. Eastern Catholics favor a crown, but we have this curious headpiece. In Greek, the word means turban. Old paintings and mosaics provide clues about headgear for bishops, and there is very little artistic evidence for the miter before the year Before then, some kind of head covering might have been worn to offset the damp and chill of unheated churches. The pope, as far back as the seventh century, often wore a cap called a camelaucum. Around that time, artists painting St. Peter began to portray their subject wearing this hat. By the year 1000 or so, the pope began to grant similar helmet-shaped headgear as gifts to visiting abbots and bishops. They returned home with these new chapeaus, and before long everybody wanted one! Today, miters are granted not only to bishops, but to certain favored abbots and occasionally abbesses. Pope Benedict XVI set aside the tradition of the papal tiara in favor of the miter, even on his coat of arms. Pope Paul VI was the last pope to have a coronation. As recently as the 1960s, miters were towering skyscrapers of jewels and rich silks, but now a simplicity of style is favored by bishops. Miters are here to stay, and experienced altar servers know how to await the bishop s removing of the miter, since he does not wear it when he is saying the presidential prayers or the Eucharistic Prayer. Monday: St. Alphonsus Ligouri loved the Eucharist. In his honor, make a visit to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Tuesday: Find someone who is doing what you want to be doing well, and ask them how they do it. Wednesday: Promise one another not to complain today and find at least one positive thing to share. Thursday: St. John Vianney is the patron saint of priests. Send a homemade card to a priest who is special to your family. Friday: Attend First Friday Mass or benediction as a family There are special graces involved in First Friday observances. Saturday: The Transfiguration: Read Luke 9:28b- 36 and serve vanilla ice cream, recalling that Jesus s garments became whiter than snow. Partners in Faith - July 2016 Mark your calendars today! Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Luke 12:13-21 On the Way to Mass: What is the difference between needing something and wanting it? How often do you need the things that you want? On the Way Home From Mass: How do we now when we have too much? What if we have little - does I mean God cares about us less? Living the Word: During the summer, children who receive free lunches during the school year can go hungry. Neighborhood food banks and local governments have tried to fill the gap. See if there is a group near you that prepares and serves meals over the summer months. Find out what your family can contribute canned goods, prepared food, or time on the serving line. Once you have made a connections, remember that food banks need contributions year-round to feed people in need. Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families Stewardship Opportunities Over 200 children and young people, preschool through grade 12, will sign up this fall to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow by becoming a catechist. We are currently looking for grade school catechists on Sunday mornings. Middle school catechists and Confirmation catechists on Wednesday evenings. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, I learn so much from the children! We provide you with training, materials, and support. Classes begin in September- October. This year we are requesting registration for the St. Agnes Religious Education and CYM programs as soon as possible so we can prepare for the upcoming year. Once again the early registration fee will be $30.00 per child if paid by August 31, The registration can be mailed or put into the collection basket. If registration is completed after July 31 st the fee will be $40.00 per child. The Sunday Religious Education program will be held from 9:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. in the St. Agnes School building. This morning is for the elementary grades (Pre-School- 5 th ). The Sunday program will begin on October 2, The Wednesday Religious Education classes will be held from 7:00 p.m. 8:15 p.m. in the St. Agnes School building. This evening is for the graders. The Wednesday program will begin on September 7, High School CYM Groups (9-12 grades) will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m. in the leader s home. The CYM program will begin on September 7, Confirmation for the 11th grade CYM groups will be held in the Garden Level twice a month on Wednesdays from 7:00 9:00 p.m. The parent/youth meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 7th at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden Level.
