In 2015, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops updated its statement on political responsibility, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, for the 2016 election. The current document has its roots in One significant addition is a new introductory note addressing the current election cycle. This asks, We urge our pastors, lay and religious faithful, and all people of goodwill to use this statement to help form their consciences; to teach those entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respectful public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming election in light of Catholic teaching. Faithful Citizenship includes new content to address emerging concerns regarding abortion, physician-assisted suicide, marriage, environmental concerns, violence against Christians, religious freedom, poverty, immigration and terrorism. Previous CARA surveys of Catholic adults indicate that fewer than 1 in 5 can recall reading Faithful Citizenship after an election. Most of those who are aware of the document read excerpts in parish bulletins and news articles rather than the long-form piece. It is thus perhaps not surprising that only about 1 in 20 consider it to be a major influence on their political choices. One of the challenges Catholic Church leaders face in the United States is that if they were to follow Faithful Citizenship closely, Catholics would be homeless in the two-party system. Thus, the document is intended to form consciences for making what are often difficult political choices. The Church s stance on issues is divided between both parties. One could argue that Church leaders stances on poverty, immigration, the death penalty and climate change are more consistent with the Democratic Party platform. At the same time, stances on abortion, marriage, religious freedom and euthanasia are more consistent with the Republican Party platform. No matter who the two major party nominees are, neither will embody the stances Faithful Citizenship promotes in its entirety. 4 P[g_ 4 Nov_m\_r 6, 2016 From the Seminary So how did the name of Saint Meinrad get to Indiana from Switzerland? In the mid 1850s a priest, Father Kundek in southern Indiana was seeking assistance with the pastoral needs of the German-speaking Catholic population. The priest also wanted to provide for the education of young men to become priests to meet the ongoing need in the region. Father Kundek sought assistance from the Benedictine Monks of Einsiedeln Abbey, the home of St. Meinrad. In 1854, two monks from Einsiedeln arrived and began providing the sacraments to the settlers in the region. The first home for the monks was wooden shack near where the current abbey stands today. The monks dealt with epidemics of cholera and malaria and financial woes during the first years of the monastic community. St. Meinrad s attained its independence of Einsiedeln and became an abbey in The first abbot, Martin Marty in 1876 left the St.Meinrad Abbey to found a Benedictine monastery to assist the Indian Missions the Dakota Territory. Bishop Martin Marty was the founder of Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD. Fire destroyed the original buildings in The abbey and school were rebuilt using Indiana limestone that is still part of the Archabbey complex today. In1954, St. Meinrad became an Archabbey one of only two in the United States and one of eleven worldwide. Monks from St. Meinrad s over the year started daughter abbeys in Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, South Dakota and California. Education, from its earliest days, has been a priority for St. Meinrad. From 1857 until 1861, the monks provided only high school education. In 1861, the monks expanded their general courses to include undergraduate courses in philosophy and theology. Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology has grown out of this school.the School of Theology continues today preparing men for service in the Catholic Church as priests. The Seminary and School of Theology now also has education and formation programs for permanent deacons and lay ministers, as well as a summer liturgical leadership program for high school youth and their adult leaders. The Seminary and School of Theology offers graduate-level degrees in theology. Priesthood candidates work toward a Master of Divinity. Lay degree students can earn a Master of Arts (Theology) or a Master of Arts (Pastoral Theology). A two-year pre-theology program leads to a Master of Catholic Philosophical Studies. More than 5,000 men and women have studied in the School of Theology. Even though experiencing few resources and significant tribulations in its initial stages, St. Meinrad is now recognized as an elite seminary because of hard work, prayer and dedication of its Benedictine community and instructional staff. As St. Meinrad s grew from humble beginnings, so the relationship with our Lord is a growth process. And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those would seek him. (Hebrews 11:6) Through dedication to prayer, receiving the sacraments and with our just actions and words, we increase in the Lord s grace. And it is through His mercy; we will obtain everlasting life. -Dan Gilbert EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS Saturday, 4pm Ciborium - Anne Hippe; Chalice - Linda Elley; Patsy Judes-Fulk, Deb Hilzer, Connie McDonnough, Mark & Kath Rueb Sunday 8am Ciborium: Susan Lessert; Chalice: Dick Lessert; Bob Muldoon, Nick Reyes, Margaret Rood, Gene Schwarzkopf, Dan Warburton 10:30am Ciborium - Joe Lissolo ; Chalice - Linda Gonzales; Rick Cantril, Mike Schaff, Joanne Kreig, Diana Rohrick, Judy Schwartz GREETERS Saturday 4pm Dale & Veronica VonLintel (E) Don & Jean Christensen (N) Chris & Larry Burbach (S) Sunday 8am Missy & Gene Hauck (E) Mike Merrigan (N) Steve & Janice Hamburger (S) 10:30am Mike & Robin Hayhurst (E) Mardee Downing Bice (N) Gabby & Rebecca Montanez (S) November Ministers LECTORS Nov 5 4pm Jeff West Nov 6 8am Carol Herman 10:30am Mark Loose USHERS Sat 4pm Chuck Elley, Capt; Mike Svitak, Kevin Wagner, Steve Olsen Sun 8am Troy Herman, Captain; Mike Hackett, Scott Schiff, Jim Kerr 10:30am Gene Penn, Captain; Brad McCaslin, Patrick & Tim Madden SACRISTANS Sat 4pm: Volunteer Sun 8am: Terrance Fox 1030am: Brandi McCaslin SERVERS Nov 5, 4pm Osiris Saucedo, Jace Henderson Nov 6, 8am Mitch Moravec, Emma Herman 10:30am Emery Wineman, Kenny Witcofski

11 Classroom News... Pre-K Class by Elise Gurrola We are well into our year of Pre-K and our first set of Parent Teacher conferences are over. I was pleased to share all of the learning and progress with parents. Our Pre-K students are growing each and every day through our daily routine, large and small group work and most of all through play. We have transformed out Dramatic Play center into a Hospital where students can become a doctor, nurse, or patient. They love this because they can take the role and use their imaginations. We had a visit from the Scottsbluff Fire Department this month as well. They spoke with us about fire safety in our homes and what to do if there is ever a fire at home. We were able to see the gear that the firefighters wear and we were also able to take a look in their big fire truck. The students had a great time! Pre-K students have made huge progress in their letter recognition, writing and recognizing their names and also counting We are continuously working toward number recognition and number writing as well as letter sounds and now have introduced rhyming. Our 50 th day of school is coming up already! We will have a 50 s celebration for this day on November 11 th. We will also do a Friendship Feast with our friends from the Kindergarten classroom in late November too. 5th Grade Class by Liz Salazar Wow!! The first quarter of the school year has come and gone! We have experienced some exciting opportunities during this time. We have had a couple of fun and educational fieldtrips. We have been to the Midwest Theater to see Thomas Rhys, the juggling scientist. We also attended the Water Education for Tomorrow at the YMCA Trails West Campground. During this day, we learned about importance of water and how it needs to be protected. In Science, we are currently learning about the design process. This past week, we experienced it first hand when the students worked in small groups. Each group was given 60 mg of modeling clay, twenty-five pennies, and a container of water. Each group had to work together to design a raft that would not float and hold the greatest amount of pennies. ( See photos.) In Social Studies, we are learning about our nation's government and the election process. We have read a couple of articles that have appeared in Scholastic News magazine about the current campaign and the candidates. We are anxiously awaiting election day to find out the outcome! We look forward to the second quarter with positive attitudes and renewed energy to excel!
