Weaver, Pastor Dear Friends of Wesley; As Christmas approaches we are happy to celebrate what many believe is the greatest event in human history, the entrance of the Son of God into the world. Jesus is the Word made flesh and the fulfillment of the words of the prophets. There is much to celebrate and experience this Advent and Christmas Season. I hope that your faith celebrations and experiences are centered on Wesley Church and all that is being offered this season. The Sunday prior to Christmas we again offer Manger in The Park a live nativity that begins at 6 p.m. in the Town Park of Bloomsburg. The birth story told, Humphrey the camel, hot chocolate and cookies, and your community it is a great night. I celebrate with you the excitement of Wesley Church s Christmas Eve Services. The first of three Candlelight services on Christmas Eve will be held at 2 p.m. with Communion served during the service. This traditional service will give an opportunity to those who travel Christmas Eve, or choose to spend Christmas Eve with family, to worship on Christmas Eve. The second service of the day is a KID S Christmas Service, this service begins at 7 p.m. and is totally geared toward children who happen to bring their parents and family. This year the theme is Everything Is Awesome with our focus on the truth that Jesus is Awesome. This service is a fast-paced, creative, and fun way to get the Gospel Christmas message to kids and all who attend. Adding to the festivities will be The Joyful Ringers as they enhance the service with the ringing of bells. Our final service of Christmas Eve is a traditional candlelight service of Lessons and Carols. The candles are lit, the Lessons are read, the Carols are sung, the choir sings, the message is proclaimed all as we welcome Christmas Day at midnight. This service begins at 11 p.m. Start to consider who in your circle of family and friends you will invite and bring to one of Wesley s Christmas Eve services celebrating the Spirit of Christmas! My prayer is that this Christmas will be a great celebration of the truth made flesh dwelling among you and your family. Be Blessed, Pastor Gary The giving of gifts is not something man invented. God started the giving spree when He gave a gift beyond words, the unspeakable gift of His Son. ~ Robert Flatt Wesley Tidings, page 2

3 This year at Wesley Church, the focus during the Advent and Christmas Seasons will be the Spirit of Christmas. Each Sunday, Pastor Gary will deliver a message from The Book of Luke bringing that Spirit more alive than ever. The month of December also has a schedule full of other activities to enhance the Advent and Christmas seasons including three Christmas Eve worship services from which to choose. The following schedule will help you as you plan to be part of this joyous time of year. 4 Wesley s Hands-To- Hearts Committee is once again looking forward to sponsoring the church s annual Birthday Party for Jesus. This favorite children s activity takes place in the social room and is for children ages 2-8. There will be singing, games, crafts, a birthday party, and a special visit from the big man with a white beard. All Children Welcome Those who attend should bring a gift of a non-perishable food item to benefit The Bloomsburg Food Cupboard. Reservations for the Birthday Party for Jesus will be accepted up until noon on Wednesday, December 2, To reserve a spot for your children, please contact the church office at or go to wesleybloom.org. This year s special Christmas musical will present original music interspersed with familiar carols that re-tells the Christmas story from the vantage point of angels. Angels are referenced throughout the Scriptures and play a major role in the story of Christ s birth, from Gabriel s first appearance to Zacharias, to the glorious scene of angels filling the heavens singing Gloria in excelsis Deo. As the cantata ends, the congregation will have the opportunity to join the choir in singing Angels We Have Heard On High and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Plan now to be part of this Christmas offering by Wesley s Sanctuary Choir under the direction of Patricia W. Gensemer. Wesley Tidings, page 4

8 By Marg Laytar, UMW Member Wesley United Methodist Women As you may have heard, 2016 will be a year of change for the United Methodist Women at Wesley Church. Those of us involved are actually excited about the change, as it will offer many opportunities to be together for Bible study, book reports given by members, programs/speakers chosen by members, visits to nursing homes and shut-ins, AGAPE UMCOR work sessions held at their facility nearby and, hopefully, other new ideas from members. All these events/programs can be complemented by bringing a bag lunch to enjoy together, or even going out for a lunch when possible. Although we do not plan to meet in July or August, if someone should have an idea for an activity, we can easily change our minds if anyone wants to participate. Of course, we will continue our many traditional activities as in the past such as the Spaghetti Dinner Bake Sale, Wesley Community Meal, Pasties Sale, Lenten Teas (if they are available), the Wesley Forest Women s Retreat, as well as a bi-yearly Women s Day Apart on a Saturday, a UMW picnic, vegetable soup sale, Head Start Christmas Gift Project, a Christmas lunch, our Annual Christmas Cookie/Welsh Cookie Sale in December, and two UMW Blood Drives. In January and February, I plan to lead two sessions on Forgiveness Finding Peace Through Letting Go, by Adam Hamilton. His warm, relatable style can help us with any past, present, or future needs of forgiveness. The sessions will start at 12 noon with our bag lunch dessert will be furnished. The UMW Leadership Team hopes that you will embrace these changes in our organization and continue to support UMW as you have done so generously in the past. Who knows we may find that a casual approach to our meetings will free us to enjoy each other s company more and will help us to find new and innovative ways to be more intentional in fulfilling our purpose as United Methodist Women. UMW Christmas Luncheon This year s UMW Christmas Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, December 9, at 11:30 a.m., in the Montour Room at Pine Barn Inn. The guest speaker will be Kate Fetterhoff who will entertain those present with Christmas music interspersed with Scripture. Reservations are required for this festive and celebratory Christmas luncheon. UMW Head Start Christmas Gifts Due December 13 A special thank you is extended to all those who are taking part in this year s UMW Head Start Christmas Project. Please note that all gifts should be returned to the church before the end of the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, December 13. Thank you for the continued support of this project year after year. UMW Welsh Cookies and Christmas Cookie Sale The UMW annual Welsh cookie baking activity will take place on Tuesday, December 15, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the church kitchen. Many hands are needed, so please consider taking part. A great time is had by all during this project, so bring your rolling pin and cooling racks, and join your Wesley UMW friends making Welsh cookies. The annual UMW Christmas cookie sale will take place in the multi-purpose room on Saturday, December 19 (see ad on next page). Please support this sale by baking and contributing several batches of your favorite Christmas cookies all varieties are welcomed. Don t forget to label each variety and indicate whether or not they contain nuts. Cookies should be brought to the church during the day on Friday, December 18, or early Saturday. Proceeds from the cookie sale benefit missions. Wesley Tidings, page 8

9 Sponsored by the Wesley United Methodist Women to benefit local, national, and international missions. Please shop early for the Christmas cookies of your choice they go fast! At Christmas, we think of the tinsel and the mistletoe the evergreen tree with presents underneath. Suddenly, mounds of cookies overtake the kitchen table and a pot of Christmas spice tea brews on the stove. White Christmas and Silent Night are sung and played over and over before the day even arrives. There seem to be more smiles and how-do-you-dos as we come and go shopping and worshipping. We think of loved ones near and far and miss those no longer with us. Peace on Earth evades us, but we don t give up hope and keep praying for that day to come. Amidst it all, we look to the bright sky above, filled with stars and awe and wonderment... and that one especially bright star and we thank God for Christmas and the greatest gift of all that little Babe in the manger. ~ Eileen To make an appointment to donate blood on January 6, go to or call RED CROSS ( ). Walk-in s are also welcome! For additional information, or to volunteer to help at the drive, contact UMW Blood Drive Coordinator, Cathy Casey at , or casey120@ptd.net. Wesley Tidings, page 9

10 By Janet and John Bodenman, G.L.O.W. Co-Leaders G.L.O.W. Youth have been busy this fall living out the KNOW, GROW, and GO mission of Wesley Church. Each week youth from Wesley and other churches meet for devotions, games, and snacks. G.L.O.W. has served the community by digging potatoes, collecting money, volunteering at the Bloomsburg Food Cupboard, and going on a Rake and Run to clean up fall leaves for church members and their neighbors. We had an inspiring visit from two Bloomsburg University college students who shared their faith journeys, and we tried out our new sound system and screen by watching the Christian film, Do You Believe. For fun, we kicked off the year with a bar-b-que at the Ross s (where we played in a gaga ball pit built by Tom Ross), spent a day at the Bloomsburg Fair together, participated in teambuilding exercises at Wesley Forest, had a big bonfire at the Thrush s, and enjoyed a fantastic moonlit glow in the dark hayride at the Lurowist s farm. We finished out November by making ornaments for the Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace theme we used to decorate our Treefest tree which is given, complete with presents under the tree, to our local adopted family for Christmas. G.L.O.W. encourages all 6 th through 12 th grade youth to join the 25 to 30 who attend from week to week. Most meetings occur on Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. We start in the gym or social hall where we play games, sing, and socialize. Then we break into junior high and senior high age groups and do devotions or projects, coming back together for yummy homemade snacks donated by volunteers. Youth come from Wesley and other local churches, and friends are always welcome whether or not they currently have a church family. If you or your youth would like to learn more about G.L.O.W. youth, please contact Janet or John Bodenman at jbodenma@bloomu.edu or Pastor Gary (pastorgary@wesleybloom.org) for additional details. 12 2016 Mission Team to Hurricane, West Virginia By Janet and John Bodenman, UMYF Co-Leaders The mission team is forming, and so far eighteen youth have committed to travel to Hurricane, West Virginia, in July of An additional number of adults will join them to complete the team of twenty-five. A growing community of over 6,000 residents, Hurricane was established in 1888 and named after Hurricane Creek. Locals pronounce the town HURR-i-CUNN not HURR-i-CANE. Less than 17 miles southeast of Hurricane is a post office named Tornado. Ten percent of the population is on some form of federal/state assistance. The only weatherization program that serves this area reaches to less than 5% of the population. The per capita income is $25,933 with 7% of the population below the poverty level (and 17.5% of the population of West Virginia below the poverty level). Throughout the week G.L.O.W. is there, youth and leaders will work alongside homeowners to make their homes warmer, safer, and accessible. Each team member pays $300 of the $625 per person cost for the trip. This includes registration fees; transportation to and from; lodging; meals; activities; and supplies for the homes we fix. We must raise $325 a person in addition to what each member pays out of pocket (which is why we fundraise). We are blessed to have a generous church whose mission committee has donated $4,000 towards our fundraising goal. We have $4,000 more to raise. How can you help G.L.O.W. raise funds? Buy Weis or Giant Cash for Causes gift cards (see Sue Frederick or John Bodenman). Join us at Applebee s Dining to Donate day by bringing in flier (included with this issue of Wesley Tidings) on Monday, January 25, 2016 (the youth will receive 10%). Come to the Men of Wesley Spaghetti Dinner (G.L.O.W. will be assisting) on Saturday, February 20, Attend G.L.O.W. s Flap-Jack Breakfast at Applebee s, 8-10 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, Purchase chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels at the Sojourners book stand at the Renaissance Faire on Saturday, April 23, 2016 Sponsor a youth with a donation. We look forward to sharing updates with you as we build our team and get ready for our journey to Hurricane, West Virginia. Thank you for all of your support so far. Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. ~ Matthew 24: 45. Giant Food Stores & Weis Markets Gift Cards You can purchase Cash for Causes gift cards for Giant Food Stores and Weis Markets that will help G.L.O.W. earn cash for their 2016 mission trip. Everyone buys groceries, and you can help this fundraiser. Gift cards are available every Sunday morning, in the Coffee Café. Cards are available in amounts of $25, $50, or $100 and, you get dollar for dollar what you spend. Don t forget: Cash for Causes gift cards make terrific gifts during this season of giving. Your purchase will not only provide a gift for someone, but you will be helping the youth, too. Here is an example of what the youth will earn: $500 of gift cards = $25. The profit for the youth is 5%. This is an easy way to support the youth. The cards can be purchased with cash or checks. Checks should be made to Wesley United Methodist Church and in the memo line write Cash for Causes. Cash for Causes will be an ongoing fundraiser so you can purchase cards on Sunday mornings or or call Sue (drf52@aol.com or or ) to let her answer questions or get gift cards to you. 15 Dear Church Family: Thank You Thoughts Words can t begin to express our gratitude for all the prayers and concern for Faith, our daughter-in-law, over the last five years. Our son expressed his thanks for all the cards he and Jade have received from the Wesley family. We are so appreciative of Pastor Gary and Cindy s visit as well as all the cards, phone calls and the book, A Time to Grieve from Cynthia Willis and the Grief Team. This book will be shared with David and Jade. We miss seeing everyone. And how did little Tim behave? asked Mrs Cratchit, when she had rallied Bob on his credulity and Bob had hugged his daughter to his heart s content. As good as gold, said Bob, and better. Somehow he gets thoughtful, sitting by himself so much, and thinks the strangest things you ever heard. He told me, coming home, that he hoped the people saw him in the church, because he was a cripple, and it might be pleasant to them to remember upon Christmas Day, who made lame beggars walk, and blind men see. ~ Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol Wesley Tidings, page 18

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, And on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. ~ Luke 2: 1-20, NIV
