1 WOR credits Course Description In this course, we will examine the following subjects as they relate to worship: our call, prayer, music, evangelism, public worship, and taking worship to the streets. Texts: Elements of Worship by Judson Cornwall Public Praise by Graham Kendrick "Worship Equipping Series #1" audio cassettes by LaMar Boschman "Worship Equipping Series #3" audio cassettes by the International Worship Leaders Institute Objectives Academic You will quote the following Scripture passages: 3 Revelation 5:9,10,12,13 3 John 12:21b 3 Deuteronomy 32:3,4 3 Revelation 7: I Chronicles 16:23-29, You will give a definition for the following terms: 3 worship 3 axion 3 shachah 3 amen 3 hallelujah You will state the basic purpose of Scripture. You will state four elements which can help create an attitude of worship. You will list at least four ways of expressing worship. You will state five ordinances of the Church which can help direct worship attitudes. You will discuss the meaning of the scroll seen in Revelation 5 and its importance in worship. You will state the first step in worship. You will state at least five pictures of Jesus seen in Revelation which reveal Him to be worthy of worship. You will describe the attitude of worship. You will discuss the three kinds of prayer observed in Heaven. You will discuss when and why music was instituted as part of Judaic worship. You will define psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. You will state at least four effects that music can have upon worshipers. You will state three possible sources to which you can turn to increase your vocabulary of worship. You will state the main difference between prayer and worship. You will state the seven promises God gives to worshipers that show His commendation of their actions. You will state at least three examples from our Christian heritage of praising and worshipping on the streets. You will state at least two ways in which Praise Marches influence evangelistic outreaches. You will state the eight spiritual sacrifices the Scriptures call upon us to offer to the Lord. 1

2 Attitudinal You will have an attitude of total dependence upon your Lord, resulting in expressions of worship. You will be filled with gratitude and awe as you contemplate the magnificence of the work the Lord has done for you, and you will worship. You will appreciate the wide variety of ways in which different people express their worship. You will desire to increase your vocabulary, verbal and physical, for expressing worship. You will celebrate in your worship! Behavioral You will deliberately take part in worshiping the Lord in ways which are unusual for you. You will be united in worship of the Lord with others who are unlike you. You will increase your vocabulary of worship. You will celebrate in worship. You will plan and carry out a prayer walk in your city or town with at least one prayer partner. You will intercede, with worship, for your community. Course Requirements 1. Completely read Elements of Worship by Judson Cornwall, answering the corresponding questions included in this syllabus. ese answers will be submitted to your instructor for evaluation at the end of the course. 2. Completely read Public Praise by Graham Kendrick, answering the corresponding questions included in this syllabus. 3. Listen to all cassettes and videos as assigned, taking notes on each in your course notebook. ese will be submitted to your instructor at the end of the course. 4. Earn at least a B on all Tests (not Self-Tests). 5. e study of worship is irrelevant if it does not make you a greater, more passionate worshiper of the King. erefore, you are to be involved in at least Standards for Grading Assignments As indicated below, C or 2.0 level work is considered average. Leaders are not average people. You are therefore expected (required) to put forth the effort necessary to demonstrate at least B (3.0) level work or higher on all assignments which you submit. Any which do not will be returned to you with input from your instructor on how you can raise your grade to the expected level. A course grade will not be given until your assignments demonstrate that you have understood the material presented in the course and allowed your life to be transformed by the Spirit and the Word studied the requirements for attaining a B. Your individual assignments (notebooks, tests, reports) will be graded according to the following standards. ese grades will be averaged together to determine your course grade. Remember, CLU is training leaders and leaders are above-average people. Your work will reflect that. D C B A Indicates barely passing work that is inferior to the average both in quantity and in quality. Manifests a lack of initiative or sense of responsibility or both. Average work; either steady work of an acceptable quality, or work of a high quality which is uneven, irregular or fragmentary. May be mechanically or outwardly correct but shows little reflection upon or personal assimilation of the material. Intelligently has fulfilled the requirements of this course. Understands the subject matter presented and has applied it to his life in a limited manner but has not really made the truths his own. Grasped the material with thoroughness, industry and correctness of detail. Made the material his own by thinking about it and integrating it, using originality, natural ability, and insight. 2

3 one corporate and one private worship experience each week during this course. Forms are provided in the Questions section of this course notebook for you to complete following each session, documenting date, time, and location, and summarizing the encounter. You are strongly encouraged to use this time to explore corporate worship gatherings which are different from your norm. Visit churches of different denominations and cultures. Don t go just to observe, but enter into their styles and liturgies as best you are able, expanding your verbal and physical vocabularies for worshipping your Creator. In addition, try different things in your personal worship times. Do things you have never done before, always keeping in mind the only acceptable focus of our worship. 6. Plan, execute, and report on a prayer walk, according to the instructions in your Course Schedule. 3

5 WOR Course Schedule Lesson One Assignment to be completed: Carefully read the Introduction and Chapter 1 of Elements of Worship, answering the discussion questions included in this syllabus. Listen to cassette 1 of Worship Equipping Series, Series #1, e Call to Worship, taking notes in your course notebook. Memorize Revelation 5:13. Complete and grade Self-Test One. e purpose of the Self-Tests is to emphasize and clarify the course objectives. ey may be taken with open book, if necessary. Worship at least once in a corporate setting and once privately. Document these on the form found in the Questions section of you Course Notebook. Subjects to be explored and discussed: Worship Is Inseparable from Life e Call to Worship Related objectives: You will quote Revelation 5:13. You will give a definition of worship. You will state the basic purpose of Scripture. You will state four elements which can help create an attitude of worship. You will list at least four ways of expressing worship. You will state five ordinances of the Church which can help direct worship attitudes. Lesson Two Assignment to be completed: Read Chapters 2 and 3 of Elements of Worship, answering all related questions included in this syllabus. Listen to cassette 2, Our Responsibility in Worship, taking notes in your course notebook. Memorize John 12:21b and Revelation 5:9, 10. Complete and grade Self-Test Two. Document your corporate and private worship times. Related objectives: You will quote John 12:21b. You will quote Revelation 5:9, 10. You will discuss the meaning of the scroll seen in Revelation 5 and its importance in worship. You will state the first step in worship.
