The student will be encouraged to pursue a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through practice and discipline. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the biblical (theological) foundations for personal discipleship. 2. Gain a deeper understanding of the importance of personal devotion, prayer, Scripture intake, memorization, and other spiritual disciplines. 3. Deepen and grow their faith and knowledge of Christ through small group discussion, encouragement, and accountability. 2 DESCRIPTION Discipleship is designed to train you in evaluating yourself spiritually in light of God s Word, to help you grow by learning from your discipler, and to encourage you in building relationships for His Glory. We are excited about our six weeks together sharing our lives with one another! Our desire is to model a discipling relationship and to equip you in becoming a discipler at home or in your church. Discipleship I focuses on our relationship with God with an emphasis on the Personal Spiritual Disciplines. Discipleship II focuses on our relationship with people and the practice of Corporate Spiritual Disciplines. In both Discipleship I & II we will answer basic questions that every disciple should know. When you come to class please bring your Bible, your textbook: Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, the Discipleship workbook, and a pen or pencil. OVERVIEW Session Topics Week One: Who is a disciple? What is discipleship? Who is God? What are God s plans for me? / Meet those in your small group Week Two: How do I relate to God? How does God communicate with me? Week Three: Meditating and praying through Scripture Week Four: How can I do what pleases God? Week Five: How do I communicate with God? Week Six: Practicing the Spiritual Disciplines Criteria for Course Credit 1. Fill out a Spiritual Check-up before class begins and after Discipleship I is complete. 2. Attend each class (minimum of 4 to pass class) and participate in the discussion with class group. If absent from class, please continue work in notebook. 3. Read the assigned chapters in the textbook Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Dr. Don Whitney. Complete the handout for each chapter and the reflection questions. 4. Complete the weekly assignments given to practice the Spiritual Disciplines during your time alone with the Lord each day. 5. Married ladies: Have a date with your husband by the end of Term 1 to discuss the spiritual disciplines from Discipleship I. Complete the handout. Single ladies: Meet with a discipler to discuss the spiritual disciplines from Discipleship I. Complete the handout. 6. Go over the Accountability Questions with your accountability partner each week during weeks 3 through 5. Pray for one another. 2
