There is a Time for Everything What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there O P E N A R M S M I S S I O N Aug - Oct, 2015 is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all this toilthis is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. 3 from the CEO I have been blessed to have served here at OAM for 13 years now. When I reflect on those years, there are so many good memories. The best memories are those of mission friends who chose to let God make changes in their lives. Here s a picture of Lynda. She has been a resident in one of our apartments for 10 years or more. When Lynda became a resident and participant here at OAM, she struggled with alcoholism. I have many memories of her recovery. We thank God for her as we witnessed a harvest of her life. She celebrated 7 years of sobriety here this past June 2nd. Lynda is here almost daily and she is the gifted lady that decorates our Mission Centre hall throughout the year. The reason I am profiling her in this issue is because of our focus on the harvest, both in crops and in souls. There are many, many Lynda s that we encounter in our ministry divisions that have heard the Word, made good decisions, and have experienced the joy of inviting Christ into their lives and became new creations. We need to see these harvests! Imagine how difficult it would be to do the Lord s work here every day without seeing the blessings of lives changed... the fruit of our labour? I believe that we find the strength to continue because of those many victories. The Lord said to plant the seeds. Like the garden at the farm, we plant and we reap the harvest after God provides the nurturing. An so it is here with people. We plant the seeds of hope, God nurtures, and we get to see the harvest of lives changed. Blessings indeed! He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Psalm 107: Jerry Vanderklok Special Edition Memorial Donation Margaret Lee In memory of my mother, Margaret Barrett, age 92 Lost my two best friends; my Mom in 1976 and my Husband in 1977 Page 3
Family of the late Jake Richard Hughes presented the Welland Open Arms Mission with a donation of 2 pallets of non-perishable food. Proceeds from the 3rd Annual Jake Hughes Memorial Benefit held on May 22, 2015 were used to buy the food which will provide up to 2 months of support for over 700 clients of the Food Bank. Many thanks go out to the generous support of everyone who purchased a ticket or donated to the fundraising efforts in Jake's memory. Please visit the website to learn more about their fundraising activities. Financial Focus by Melissa Kirkpatrick OAM Financial Officer You may have heard people in their 20 s to 40 s talking about Third Party Fundraising, but what are these events? Third Party Fundraising involves independent projects undertaken by an individual, affiliated group, or organization, for the purpose of raising funds for, or on behalf of a chosen charity. At Open Arms Mission we welcome Third Party Fund-raising Events run by volunteers in the community. A volunteer initiative can take on various forms (e.g. a golf tournament, sponsoring a friend in a thing - a-thon, hosting a meal, running a bake or rummage sale. The list is endless.) Basically, a concerned individual or group does the work for your charity, collects the money and passes the earnings freely to the organization supported. In order to keep our financial health and community reputation intact, we encourage that people wishing to run a Third Party Fund-raiser event, contact us at and let us know your plans. We may have forms and questions depending on the type of event and our Logo may be made available in some cases for promotion, as well as promote the event with our partners if appropriate. A Third Party Fund-raiser is carried out by the Third Party and those volunteers that they can recruit. It should be made clear that OAM staff/volunteers are not obligated to participate, help run, nor volunteer Third Party Events unless they choose to do so as private individuals. If you find it in your heart to organize an event that could generate needed funds for OAM, please do not hesitate to contact me with your research results and questions. Open Arms Mission of Welland Inc. is a registered charity that depends on donations from individuals, organizations, businesses, and churches. Please consider how you or your friends can help OAM this year through Third Party Fund-raising Events. Source:
Before After Pressure Washing Call us for this amazing service at We will come to you or you can bring an item needing washing to the farm location. ~ Great for patios, decks, fences, equipment ~ putting people to work Specific Financial Needs The store building needs a face lift! The front overhang needs to be replaced, the building needs to be painted or sided and another sign added to the top left corner of the south side of the building. We need your financial help to partner on this project. The roof on the farm house needs complete repair before winter. The shingles and lower 2 feet of the roof plywood is rotten. We continue to pray that it won t leak until we can manage repairs in order to not damage the old style plaster inside. We need your financial help on this project. ~ If you feel God asking you to invest in these needs, please call and speak with Jerry. Details of estimates and specific needs can be discussed. To be good stewards of the blessings of the properties that God has provided to OAM, we need to ask for your specific help. Eph. 3: long play records donated to Redeemed Goods. A supporter s lifetime collection.
Meet Gary Making a Difference Gary and his wife Diane were Mission clients dating back to Gary had suffered a severe car accident in 1976 resulting in a brain injury and some disabilities. We would often see them at our food bank, clothing bank, and the Saturday meals. Gary took advantage of opportunities provided throughout the city through various non-profit agencies and managed to do some schooling and had help with trying to find work. He remembers Jerry writing him a reference letter in 2004 here at the Mission which helped get his first job and he has worked ever since. Today Gary and Diane own their own home, own a car, and they are doing quite well enjoying a regular income supported by ODSP supplements. He works part time at a retail store wearing Take advantage of the opportunities offered to you several hats; doing maintenance, safety, security, and janitorial work. Gary and Diane are very appreciative of the support that agencies like ours provided. They both serve at many city volunteer positions as a way of giving back. They are involved with the Rose Festival activities and the Dragon Boat events. Gary was asked if he had any words of advice to others struggling to get by. He said, there is no use arguing about situations that are beyond your control. There is hope! Know when to take the steps offered to you to help better your situation. Never give up hope and never be too proud to refuse help. It was great meeting up with Gary and Diane recently at the Rose Festival Day in the Park. They are very happy and appreciative of Open Arms Mission, the Hope Centre, and the March of Dimes. EVIDENCE - We are making a difference and seeing the harvest! TO ALL NATIONS OUTREACH MINISTRIES We were blessed to be able to help store some goods for a few months at the Ministry Campus warehouse for a ministry to Uruguay. They were collecting equipment and goods to fill a container for a large farm ministry to children and young adults in Uruguay. A farm tractor and parts for some Quonset huts will be included in the load. Pictured above from left to right; Cecil Hall (Volunteer) Siegfried Klassen (Director of the Ministry in Uruguay), and KR Davidson Sr. (Resource Development.) Siegfried was home on a short furlough and wanted to visit our ministry while previewing the goods collected. We thank God for the opportunity to help in a small way with this ministry and the outreach in other nations. I like their slogan Building Eternity in Peoples Lives as it resembles our slogan of making a difference.

A little girl asked her mother, "Where did people come from? "Her mother answered, "God made Adam and Eve and they had children and that's how all mankind was made." A couple of days later she asked her father the same question. The father answered, "Many years ago there were monkeys, which the human race evolved from." The confused little girl returned to her mother and said, "Mommy, how is it possible that you told me that we were created by God, and Daddy said we came from monkeys?" The mother answered, "Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his. Celery Accident. Two pieces of celery were walking down the road when one was hit by a passing car. The other piece of celery called 911 and followed his friend to the hospital. After hours of surgery the doctor surfaced from the OR. I have good news and bad news he told the friend piece of celery. The good news is that your friend s surgery was successful, the bad news is that he will spend the rest of his life as a vegetable. A purpose? God didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes and roaches come close. Church sign "How will you spend eternity? Smoking or Non-smoking?"
It was 28 years ago that a group of 6 men felt led to start this ministry in the city of Welland. Pastor Carl Stratton was the first Executive Director. He served here for the first 7 years. The food pantry consisted of an old wooden door spanning 2 saw horses, holding food items. Today, O PE N ARMS MISSIO N OF WE LLAND INC. Head Office 22 Fifth St. Welland, ON L3B 4Z3 Phone: Fax: openarmsmission@cogeco.net Making a Difference one Life at a Time! this ministry is a vibrant and vital part of the community serving from people a month with food items alone. The ministry has expanded into 3 divisions over the years, consisting of the Mission Centre including a 5 Unit Apartment Building, the Redeemed Goods store, and the farm Ministry Campus. It is truly amazing how the Lord has taken this mission work forward. Also amazing is the countless number of people that have been blessed in so many ways through this compassionate and loving ministry. The scripture speaks of seasons we have experienced many seasons over these 28 years. So, what does the future hold? What is the next season going to be like? A season of new life A season of investment into lives A season of harvest A season of rest The ministry of Open Arms Mission experiences all of these seasons in those that we serve and assist. Like the natural season of harvest before us, we pray for a harvest from the seeds that have been planted in people s lives. We need your support, so please.. Help finance the work of harvest!
