2 Feast of St. Patrick ~ Patron Saint of Ireland ~ March 17th St. Patrick s prayer for the faithful captures the wonderful spirit that made him Ireland s patron saint and one of the Church s most beloved missionaries. Born in Britain shortly before the 5th century, St. Patrick, pictured below, was taken captive to Ireland by raiders at the age of 16. He lived there for six years as a shepherd under harsh conditions and became intensely devoted to God in prayer, as he puts it, because the spirit was then fervent within me. Tradition has it that divine dreams inspired both his escape from captivity in Ireland and his return there later in his life as a bishop. In this prayer he asks for God s help in various ways: May the Strength of God pilot us. May the Power of God preserve us. May the Wisdom of God instruct us. May the Hand of God protect us. May the Way of God direct us. May the Shield of God defend us. May the Host of God guard us. Against the snares of the evil ones. Against temptations of the world May Christ be with us! May Christ be before us! May Christ be in us, Christ be over all! May Thy Salvation, Lord, Always be ours, This day, O Lord, and evermore. Amen. St. Patrick s prayer no doubt helped him in his missionary efforts. Although he faced his share of resistance, St. Patrick was so successful in preaching the gospel and organizing the Church in Ireland that he is largely credited with converting the Irish to Christianity. 3 Help stop public school districts control over Catholic schools In response to concerns that have been raised over the education provided at a small number of Jewish schools, the NYS Education Department is enforcing oversight of all nonpublic schools including Catholic schools that meet and exceed the state s academic standards. Catholic schools can easily demonstrate their academic success, are independently accredited, and are approved to operate by the Board of Regents. However, this new process will unfairly require local public school districts, who are competitors with our schools, to review our schools and then require local public school boards to vote on whether a Catholic school in their area can continue to operate (except in NYC where the public school district Chancellor will make the determination). Please urge your legislators to reject this plan and to support existing methods for the state to approve the operation of Catholic schools, which have provided superior educational opportunities for New York families for generations. ************************************************************************** How To Take Action: Please go to the following website: ~ once you ve reached the homepage, look for the tab that says: Take Action! Make sure they go to who you want them to go to. In order for that to happen you need to start planning now.
