2 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest. Matthew 9:37 38 As you read this article, I am going to give you and me a challenge. I came across this challenge from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and its Caskey Center for Church Excellence. Dr. Mark Tolbert is the Director for the Caskey Center, and he and Dr. Chuck Kelley, NOBTS President, have challenged the students there to begin the habit of the Monday Morning Prayer. The Monday Morning Prayer is a wonderful opportunity to encourage all of us to develop the intentional focus of sharing the Gospel through conversations with others who don t know Jesus as their Savior yet. One of the challenges we face is the drift away from a focus on having Gospel conversations with those we know who are not yet saved. Rarely are we ever an accidental witness. We have been Commissioned by our Lord: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:19 20). A commission calls us to be intentional. If I am honest, I drift all too often from this focus. The Monday Morning Prayer is simply focused on three phrases. There is no magic formula or way to pray about these things. I encourage you to write these phrases on an index card, or small sheet of paper, or pick up a business card sized reminder in the church foyer. These bullet point reminders will help us to focus on seeking our Lord s intervention and arrangement of these opportunities for the sake of His kingdom and His great name. Here is the essence of the Monday Morning Prayer: So that I might have a Gospel conversation this week, I pray that our Lord will Place Someone in My Path Put Someone on My Heart Give Me the Boldness to Share the Gospel I encourage all of us to include this emphasis in our prayer time each Monday morning going forward. Since Jesus has commanded us to pray like this, I am confident that He will answer these prayers. I am ready to celebrate what God is going to do in and through us as we all take up this challenge together. By Grace Alone, 2
3 ROBERT RAIKES, THE FOUNDER OF SUNDAY SCHOOLS, AND THE HOUSE WHERE THE FIRST SUNDAY SCHOOL WAS HELD IN HARE LANE, GLOUCESTER (1780) Sunday school s origins ~ Sunday school began in England as early as Better known is Robert Raikes work in Gloucester 30 years later. Concerned about poor children who worked in factories six days a week and often turned to crime, he offered classes on the only day kids were free. Soon various organizations offered a loose network of such Sunday schools, which taught basic reading and writing, using the Bible as a text. Ten years later, Samuel Slater started the first U.S. Sunday school in his Rhode Island textile mills. By the mid 1800s, Sunday school attendance was an almost universal childhood experience. As society became more secular and public education was mandated by the 1870s, Sunday schools focused on spiritual practices: prayers, hymns, catechism knowledge and Scripture memorization. Well into the 20th century, Sunday school served as the church s main outreach tool. Many adults fondly remember their teachers and lessons, and Sunday school continues to play a significant part in faith development. The power of weakness In Tramp for the Lord, Corrie ten Boom describes traveling to Russia during the Cold War when Christians were being persecuted to thank an old woman who d been secretly translating Christian books (including ten Boom s). Ravaged by multiple sclerosis, the woman could move only an index finger. Yet with it she typed constantly, translating words while praying for people who d eventually read them. Ten Boom s reaction was, Oh Lord, why don t you heal her? But the woman s husband said God had a purpose in his wife s suffering. Although the secret police closely watched other Christians, they left this woman alone, assuming she couldn t accomplish anything. Jesus works through our weaknesses, making his power perfect in them (see 2 Corinthians 12:9). He doesn t ask if we re capable only if we re willing. 3
4 4 Trust and Obey My kids will periodically tell me their plans for their lives, much in the same way that I remember doing to my parents when I was growing up. I imagine most of you can say the same. Now, how many of you have ended up doing exactly what the 9 year old version of you said that you would? In the place you said you would? Married to who the 11 year old version of you thought you would (I say 11, because the 9 year old version probably still said ew, gross! )? I m going to guess that the number that can say those things are true is between zero and one percent, trending heavily toward the former! Now, that s not necessarily a bad thing. There would be entire industries that wouldn t have any workers if we all got our childhood way. Also, would you want your 11 year old self to choose your spouse? Probably not. I say all of that to say, it s a wonderful thing to know that the Bible says in Psalm 37:23 24 A person s steps are established by the Lord, and he takes pleasure in his way. Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, because the Lord supports him with his hand. It s wonderful to know that for those who serve God, He will order our steps. We simply need to trust and obey him. One of my favorite personal examples is in regards to how we came to Claycomo. John Davis was asked by someone at the church (I can t remember who) to put up a flyer at Maple Woods Community College advertising that the church needed a new secretary. John didn t think there was any way that the secretary would come from there, but he had given his word and he knew that if he gave his word, God would expect him to follow through, so he did. And John was right. The church didn t get a secretary. The church got a secretary, a worship pastor, a choir director, a softball coach, and Sunday School teachers. John also got a best man for his wedding and close friends for his children. That s what happens when we trust and obey God and He orders our steps. A similar example is the pastor search committee that God led to Pastor Scott. We prayed, searched, and trusted that God would bring a pastor. Cheryl Foltz was on that committee and I m pretty sure she thought that we were finding a pastor, not that we were also finding her niece s husband. But that s what happens when we trust and obey God and He orders our steps. It s awesome to watch what happens when we are willing to take a back seat and let God take the lead in our lives and lay out our path. It s now been two years since the church called me to be the worship pastor here at Claycomo and I couldn t be more blessed. I don t think I ever would have guessed it years ago, but it is such a blessing. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity and thankful for everyone who helps make it work. I m excited for what God is continuing to do in the lives of the people here and in this body as a group as long as we continue to put our trust in Him and obey His Word. In Christ Alone, Jamie

7 Elsie Ford is collecting Best Choice UPC labels to help support her cousin, in Florida, who is with Campus Crusade. Please save and bring only the UPC portion of the label to Elsie (see sample at right). Thank you so much! Know your target Businesses must know their target market. Writers must know their target audience. And we all make better decisions when we consider the target of our actions. A college religion teacher set up a cardboard target in his classroom. Draw someone who has upset you, he instructed. Students sketched ex-boyfriends or -girlfriends, coworkers who d mistreated them, childhood bullies. Each, in turn, then placed their drawing over the bull s-eye and took aim with a bow and arrow. Afterward, the bull s-eye was riddled with holes. The students congratulated one another until the teacher pulled back the target, revealing Jesus scarred, torn face. Silence fell as he read:.truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 25:40, CSB). In choosing actions no matter the human target remember who else will be struck by your arrows. Let s take aim with love, not hurt. 8 It s back to school time...again! It seems that we just got out! But its almost the start of August and the stores are full with those "must" have back to school items. Need to get a new crisp backpack key to carrying all this stuff, notebook paper, pens, pencils, NEW box of crayons (nothing better than new crayons still love it to this day!), markers, colored pencils, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, new lunch box and pink erasers. As I was cleaning out drawers this past week getting ready for the wedding and checking things off my summer to do list, I found one of those pink erasers. They have been around a long time and it made me begin thinking. Wouldn't it be so easy and nice to take one of those pink erasers and erase those moments in our lives that have messed up, change an outcome after we know the answer/result, or erase something all together. I know there have been many of those moments in my life that I wish there had been a giant pink eraser to clear it away and nobody ever had to see it. I remember erasing my mistakes in school but they weren't totally clear and I would erase harder till sometimes my paper would rip. Ever been there? The amazing thing is that we find that Jesus is a giant eraser to our mistakes and sin. Don't you think that Adam and Eve would have loved to erase a few moments in the garden of Eden? I think the woman at the well would have loved an eraser when Jesus asked her for a drink and confronted her about her sins. Peter would have begged to have an eraser for taking his eyes off Jesus as he walked on the water or denied him three times. How about Paul... persecuting those who believed in Jesus? The list goes on and on throughout the entire Bible! But the amazing thing that Jesus takes His amazing eraser and when we come to Him and truly repent, He says that he forgives us and remembers our sin no more! I so wish my pink easer would remember no more! I am so truly grateful that we have an AWESOME teacher that loves us enough to correct us and yet 100% forgives us and draws us to Him! Parents, begin this school year with daily praying for AND with your children as they head off into this new year. Pray that they will stand for the things that would be pleasing and honoring not only to you but to God. Grandparents pray for your children that they will have the wisdom to parent and to stand on Gods word even when it is tough and the road seems long. Pray that they do not compromise with this world. Pray for your grandchildren as they venture into this world that is NOT full of the things of God. Pray that they stand rooted in their relationship with the Lord. Church family pray! Pray that God will use each of us in a new way this year as we walk into our new schools, new classes and new subjects. May all we do give glory and honor to Him. May we be pointing it all back to Him! In Him Alone, Rhonda Gordon CBC Children s Director 8

We have been a little smaller due to the youth traveling for summer but we still had fun with the smaller number. GENERATIONENERATION 412 Gen 412 went On the Move in July which was an awesome thing. We all really enjoyed getting the privilege to go to people s homes and get to know them a little more and share a meal together. I want to say a huge THANK YOU to all of those who welcomed us into their homes. We continued going through the book of John. It has truly been an incredible time as we have seen who Jesus is, what we are to do now that we know, and how it changes our day to day lives. I want to add that, as a youth group, we want to be able to give back to those in our church. So, if there are areas that we can come together and serve in some way please let me know and we will try and make it happen. Lastly, thank you to all of those who pray for us and support us, it is a true blessing to be a part of Claycomo Baptist Church. 9 In Christ, Austin, Dani, and Gen 412

Corrie ten Boom Grace in, grace out The computer acronym GIGO garbage in, garbage out describes how putting wrong code into a machine will lead to faulty output. Jesus offers a similar lesson in Matthew 15: What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person (v. 18, ESV). GIGO works the other way, too. If we put good things (including the good news of salvation) in our hearts, Jesus goodness will shine out through our lives. And when God s grace enters and changes us, we ll also reach out and share that good news with others. 11
