1 S S N D Y S I O N O F L O D Mary of Magdala sees the empty tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark. She then cries to Peter and the Beloved Disciple: hey have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don t know where they put im. he darkness of early morning symbolizes Mary of Magdala s lack of sight - that is, her lack of faith. he Beloved Disciple sees what is hidden. e sees the empty tomb, the burial cloths and the cloth that had covered Jesus head, but he also sees something beyond them. Beyond what he sees with his eyes is what he sees with faith. mid the loss, the Beloved Disciple sees through the light of faith... and believes. Jesus was not simply brought back to life like Lazarus. hat would be the return to normal, human life, with all its limitations. Including death. Lazarus ultimately had to go through it all again: the dying, the grieving family, the burial. Jesus did not come back. e passed over, passed through. is resurrection meant that he would no longer be subject to death. Death would have no more power over him. Jesus confronted death head on... for us. Jesus endured the wrenching of body and soul for our sake and came out the other side endowed with a new, different, glorified humanity. Mary Magdalene did not recognize the isen hrist at first, until e called her by name. esurrection is not something that e intends to keep for imself. ll that e has e shares with us. We can begin to share in this life now, experiencing its renewing power in our souls and even in our bodies. We have access to it in many wonderful ways, but especially in the ucharist. For the body of hrist that we receive is his risen, glorified body, given to us so that we too might live forever. ach of us will have to pass through physical death - but not alone. e will be with us, just as the Father was with im as e made his perilous passage. nd while we will experience indescribable joy when our souls see him face to face, this is not the end of the story. e will return. he resurrection will have its final and ultimate impact. is resurrection marks the triumph of good over evil, sin and death. It is the singular event which proves that those who trust in God and accept hrist will be raised from the dead. dapted from websites pril 16, 2017 BLSSD SMN 3127 James Street Syracuse, New York S. 3 lleluia! e is isen! BLSSD SMN SION OF LOD PIL 16, 2017 WOL OMMNIY SIS Supporting the Whole ommunity of Faith On Friday afternoon when Jesus died, the women had not been able to finish the customary preparation for burial. he Sabbath began at sundown on Friday, so Mary of Magdala hurried to the tomb Sunday morning to complete her task. She found the tomb empty. ertain that Jesus body had been stolen, she ran back to get the other disciples. Peter and the other disciple also found an empty tomb but with Jesus clothing rolled neatly and placed where his body had been. he disciples still didn t understand about the resurrection and Mary wept. s she cried, two angels appeared asking why she was crying. She then saw a gardener and asked him where the body might be. When he called her by name, Mary immediately recognized Jesus. Most parents have discovered by now that things aren t always as they seem. poured out bottle of laundry detergent wasn t really mischievous behavior, but rather an attempt to surprise you with a generous gift of service. Or secret whispers are not an attempt to hide some wrongdoing but rather an effort to plan a surprise for you. hings weren t as they seemed to Mary Magdalene either that first aster morning. Our errors in perception often work to remind us that God s plan is not always obvious, but that we are challenged to trust in the promise of the resurrection. Place symbols of aster such as lighted candles, eggs, and lilies at your dinner table today. sk some wondering questions about how these items might have become symbols for aster. ow can we be symbols of the aster message to each other and those outside our family? dults: ow can you show this week that you truly believe in the esurrection of Jesus? hildren: o whom could you tell the story of Jesus rising from the dead? Our program assists families to live out their role as the primary educators of the faith to their children and allows the family to grow through experiences of prayer, liturgy, service, outreach and celebration. e-registration information will be provided soon. appy aster! LLLI S ND! Families in our parish decorated the lleluia signs for return on aster Sunday. In the language of worship, there are words and phrases that need no translation. men is a word that indicates "so be it," and the word by which a congregation expresses its participation in prayer. Kyrie eleison is Greek for "Lord, have mercy". lleluia is the Greek and Latin form of the word allelujah, a word which means "praise the Lord." lleluia came to have an association with the celebration of the most important feast of the hurch year - aster. he association of lleluia with aster led to the custom of intentionally omitting it from the liturgy during the season of Lent, a kind of verbal fast which has the effect, not of depressing the mood of the liturgy, but of creating a sense of anticipation and even greater joy when the familiar word of praise returns. When the lleluia does return, it is with an incredible flourish. Before the proclamation of the Gospel at the aster Vigil, lleluia is sung to an exceptionally elaborate tone. hen the good news is proclaimed that hrist is risen from the dead. he dramatic effect of the return of the lleluia is heightened considerably by the fact that no alleluias have been heard since Lent began. We let it rest, as it were, during Lent, so that when it reappears on aster, we may hear it fresh. In fact, once it returns on aster, we give it no rest at all, repeating it again and again, in celebration of the esurrection of Jesus. he Lord is risen; the Kingdom has come; our joy is complete; and, in concert with the angels and saints, we greet the risen Lord with shouts of "lleluia!" hank you to our Faith Formation students, parishioners and families for their beautiful decorating of the lleluia signs!
6 90 NNIVSY OF SWOOD BPIS On this last oly hursday, pril 13th, our friends across the street at the astwood Baptist hurch celebrated their 90th anniversary as a parish. hese are the thoughts the current pastor, ev. Paul Bailey, put together: he 1920 s were an exciting time in the Village of astwood. were being built. Industry was nearby and expanding. In 1922, the astwood igh School was built. ight years later the residents voted to merge the village into the ity of Syracuse. Women were voting now. he change meant better water, sewer, police & fire protection, and it meant James St would be paved for the first time. What historians describe as the hird Great Spiritual wakening in merica was from 1890 to It was an urban focused movement of God. hurches were growing and larger buildings were being built. In 1896, the Wesleyan hurch on Midler began. he James St Methodist building was built in Blessed Sacrament held its first mass in a firehouse in 1921 and built its first sanctuary in It was in this period that Baptists started meeting in January God was at work among his people. On January 9, 1927, our congregation held it s first worship service in the Palace heatre 42 people attended. It was an experiment. Following the service, those people voted to continue for sixteen Sundays, until the last Sunday in pril hat would take them through aster, pril 17th that year. he first item on the agenda was their first prayer meeting, with 8 in attendance on hursday. One week from the Palace heatre meeting, a Sunday School was formed with 54 in attendance. week after that, a more regular meeting place was found at the astwood ose ompany #2 at 117 S. dwards ve. egular meetings began January 23rd. James Street was becoming a main corridor to Syracuse. People were settling in astwood. ventually the infant church would have to make some decisions, so there were meetings and votes. he church was growing. t the March 14, 1927 meeting, they voted to buy the home of former State Senator John. Nichols (the home no longer exists but pictures can be seen in the church library and in itus all). Nichols had died in (In 1929, the John Nichols lementary School was established on North ve, now the Brick School errace pts.) he house was big and would include a large worship space complete with baptismal pool, along with many rooms, upstairs and down. he Onondaga Social and Missionary astwood Baptist, Page 1 of 2
7 nion agreed to pay the interest on the mortgage if the church would pay $2000 a year towards the principal. he church soon assumed the interest payments as well. his was quite an accomplishment as the Depression of 1929 was looming. On pril 13, 1927, the congregation met at the ose ouse to vote on the name: astwood Baptist hurch, to vote on incorporating as a church, and receiving the charter members of the church. heir names can be found on a plaque at the back of the sanctuary. he first pastor would be called in May. he faithful people were leading the church. he congregation bought State Senator Nichols home early in 1927 and over the summer the church worked furiously to transform the house into a church home. It would be the church home until he first worship service in the house was September 11, here were baptisms, new members were received, and communion was shared. he new home required a proper dedication so ouse Dedication Week was held from Sunday to Sunday, September In 2017, we celebrate our 90th year as a church. ev. Baily adds:" When astwood Baptist built the , Blessed Sacrament was building its sanctuary at the same time. What a sight that must have been, two churches being built across the street from each other. he other commonality was that both our churches met in ose ouses (fire stations) at the beginning; different ones, but the same humble beginnings. I read that the only problems the churches ran into was keeping the horses quiet downstairs during the service. I am amazed no one mentioned the smells!" We congratulate our friends, neighbors, and fellow hristians at the astwood Baptist hurch on the 90th anniversary of their parish and we wish them much health and spiritual success in their prayer and their ministry for many years to come. May God Bless them. astwood Baptist, Page 2 of 2
