1 OUR VISION The Resurrection Catholic Community sees itself as a family that derives its sense of communion from the joyful celebration of the Holy Eucharist and the Sacraments, and the commitment to care for one another s needs through faith sharing and the willingness to offer each one s time, talents and treasure in the spirit of true unity S. Evergreen Road, Tempe, AZ Phone: (480) Fax: (480) parishinfo@resurrectionaz.org Webpage: WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS Those living in the area and regular participants in the liturgy are asked to register as members of the parish. F E A S T O F P E N T E C O S T his year we have an unusual occurrence as the great feast of Pentecost falls on the same weekend as Memorial Day observances and celebrations. It is a time to celebrate the end of the Easter season. After today, the Easter candle will return to its original place in the sanctuary next to the Baptismal pool. Yes, it remained after the feast of the ascension when originally it was extinguished. We celebrate multiple events relating to Pentecost. In the early Church, the Jewish people celebrated the Feast of Weeks, a type of thanksgiving for the harvest, then the remembrance of Moses receiving the 10 Commandments 50 days after the Exodus. In early Christianity we celebrate the coming of the Spirit on the disciples and the multiplication of languages (a reversal of the Tower of Babel). We celebrate in words and actions as we don t reduce the Spirit to merely a bird, a wind, a tongue of ire. The Spirit resides within us. And we also recall this feast as the Birthday of the Church. Is that enough imagery for one day? If not, we liven it up with the color of red and add a sequence: Come Holy Spirit or in Latin Veni Sancte Spiritus. It is one of the few days of the year we have a sequence. However, amid the red today we will also see the red, white, and blue of our nation s lag as we remember lovingly all those who have served and died in our armed forces. It is a time to visit the cemeteries where our loved ones are buried. It is a time to recall the great sacri ice that our men and women made for our country and our freedom. It is a day to remember as we see the lags and hear the Taps played. Let us not forget. Today is also a day to seek the Lord s blessings on our world that so sorely needs the values of peace and justice. It is a time to pray for an end to all the wars, violence, and terrorism that is in our country today. It is a time to pray for healing for our wounded brothers and sisters who, though they survived the war, still bear its scars in their minds and bodies. It is a time to pray for our young who in this media age are bombarded with the idealism of killing people for a cause they were not raised in or know the full extent of how it can affect their lives and the lives of others. Today, we sorely need the gifts of the Spirit in our lives: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. If these are not enough we can ask for the fruits of the Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, humility, idelity, modesty, continence, chastity. Any one of these could take us a lifetime of learning. May the Spirit gift us again today and may the souls of all our faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. Sr. Anne Marie.

All of them were illed with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. (Acts 2:3 4) A : When has the Holy Spirit given you the strength to act with courage? C & Y : When and where do you need the Holy Spirit s help to speak out? I B Our June baptisms are set, and our NEXT infant baptism will be celebrated this coming October. If you wish to baptize your child, please speak with Leota Roesch in the Faith Formation Of ice. Canonically, infant in infant baptism means a child up to the age of 7. Children who are 7 or older enter the journey to Baptism through the Rite of Christian Initiation which requires a longer period of preparation. A way to start that process, is to enroll your child in our parish Faith Formation Program.
