Mk 6:4-5 ~E LM 2001, 1998, 1970 CCD J u l y 1 2, 2015 M Y S I S T E R S A N D B R O T H E R S I N C H R I S T, here is a very old story that can be found in the Apocryphal Acts of Peter (an Apocrypha is a book with unknown authorship and doubtful authenticity, and regarded as not inspired by the Holy Spirit) that tells about St. Peter who supposedly was leeing from persecution in Rome during the time of Nero. As he ran away from the city, he met the risen Jesus whom he asked, Quo vadis, Domine? which means Where are you going, Lord? Jesus, according to the story, replied, I am going to Rome to be cruci ied again. That gave Peter enough courage to go back to the city where he eventually was martyred by cruci ixion upside down. Quo vadis? Where are you going? I believe we should be asking ourselves this question from time to time. We can always get so absorbed in our busy lives and sometimes fail to slow down and check where our lives are leading to. Sometimes we simply get lost in our crowded schedules and the things we want to accomplish, that we fail to ask, What am I doing all these for? What am I trying to achieve? Where are these leading my life to? As individuals and as a community, we should make assessments of where we are more importantly in our relation with faith and matters of religion. (You are reading this bulletin so I believe that you are a person of faith.) The Christian faith is being challenged from all fronts, and I believe that we as modern day disciples, have to stand our ground and hold on to the teachings of the faith. Our eerie silence as we watch some groups of people quietly take religion away from us speaks of our unwillingness to be cruci ied. Being inconvenienced is the last thing everyone wants to experience. We are not willing to be pushed outside our comfort zones. A few decades ago, some atheists complained that they did not want any prayer in our public schools, and we said OK. Then someone said that you better not read the Bible in school and you better not post the Ten Commandments in school as well as in public places, and we said OK. Another group demanded that people exercise freedom from religion, not freedom of religion, and we said that is ine. (To each his own, right?) In 1973, a mother is given the right to choose to kill her own baby. Then recently, people of the same gender are allowed to be married. There are many other things that have happened in our society that pose serious challenges to our way of living out the faith. I wish to reiterate that these are matters of faith - but not only that. These de ine who we are as a people and as a nation one that claims to have been founded through the guidance and protection of Divine Providence. I GOD WE TRUST is our motto. Recently, they removed a sign bearing the TEN COMMANDMENTS from a public place. That is tantamount to saying that GOD is not welcome in public places. It came as no surprise because anything religious in public places violates the Constitution nowadays. And besides, some people regard the TEN COMMANDMENTS as TEN SUGGESTIONS. QUO VADIS? Even then, I assure you: GOD LOVES US ALL VERY DEARLY. In Christ, FR. ROMY

4 G "He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick-no food, no sack, no money in their belts." Jesus gave the Twelve Apostles a remarkable mission. He sent them out two by two to preach repentance, to cast out evil spirits, and to heal the sick. And he made them do it in a spirit of complete dependence upon God. They were not allowed to take anything along that would have given them material comfort or security. These men--who did not even have the witness of other apostles or saints to inspire or give them courage, and who had not yet beheld the Resurrection of the Lord stepped out into the world with literally nothing but their faith in this man named Jesus. And look what happened! "The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. The apostles' trust in God's power to work these miracles through their hands began with trust in God's power to provide for their own needs. Because they didn't have food, shelter, or money, every time they received food or shelter or had their needs met, the apostles were able to see that God was at work in their midst. This experience bolstered their faith and encouraged them in their mission. When we ind ourselves questioning whether we really have the "power" to do what God wants us to do, then we ought to step back and try to depend a little more directly upon God's providence. Tithing is one way to accomplish this. When we set aside a portion of our income for the sake of others, we make an act of trust in God's power to provide for us. Surrendering this element of care for ourselves allows God to meet our needs himself. And when he does, our faith will lourish too. 5 or ext. 125 ADULT FAITH FORMATION B C S F : The ministry of every baptized person is discipleship. The reason we invite folks into the RCIA is to make more disciples. The reason our parish exists is to make more disciples. The reason priests and deacons get ordained is to make more disciples. The reason we have faith formation and youth ministry is to make more disciples. So our ministry is not RCIA. Our ministry is making disciples. YOU are Christ s hands and feet in this 21 st Century, and YOU are baptized to be disciple-makers! For every Christian, the proclamation and witnessing of the Gospel are never an isolated act. This is important, and no evangelizer acts "on the strength of a personal inspiration, but in union with the mission of the Church and in her name Pope Francis, EG, 2013 W M?
