3 INFORMATION FOR OUR GUESTS WELCOME TO OUR WORSHIP! A warm welcome to our guests this morning! It is a privilege to have you join us as we worship and praise our Savior, Jesus Christ. We want you to feel at home here so we are providing the following information to make your visit as pleasant as possible. NAME TAGS When visiting, please fill out a name tag so we will know who you are and can welcome you. Name tags are located at the podium as you enter the church. CHILDREN S BULLETIN Children s Bulletins can be obtained from an usher if you have little ones with restless hands. CONNECTION CARD When the offering is being collected, all are asked to fill in the Connection Card which is in your bulletin. Please print your address and telephone number on the slip so that we may better serve you and send you more information. RESTROOMS AND WATER FOUNTAINS Restrooms are located off both the front and rear entrances to the sanctuary. Signs are located on the wall. NURSERY A nursery, with a qualified attendant, is provided for the care of children three years or younger and is located in the back of the church (Luther Hall) from 9:00-12:00. SUNDAY SCHOOL Classes for children age 3 through 5 th grade are held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Students join their families for the first two songs in the church before teachers take them to class. A SPECIAL INVITATION for everyone to join us in Adult Bible Classes at 9:30 a.m. in the Conference Room. COFFEE IS SERVED! Coffee fellowship every Sunday 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the Breezeway. Come have a donut and enjoy fellowship with one another! LARGE PRINT BULLETINS AND HYMNALS Large print bulletins and hymnals are located in the front entrance of the church (narthex.) Please ask an usher for assistance. RECEIVING COMMUNION Please see the communion statement in this bulletin. The Common Cup and Individual Cups are both available. White grape juice is found at the center of the Individual Cups for those having that medical need. If you choose the Individual cup when communing at the altar, please hold on to it until the chalice has passed. Please advise an usher if you need to commune in your pew. HOW CAN YOU BECOME A MEMBER? If you have a previous membership in a Lutheran church, you can transfer your membership to Our Savior by contacting the church office. We will gladly contact your previous church for your transfer. You may also join by profession of faith. New members are welcomed regularly, and New Member Classes are scheduled in the fall and spring. Tony Durante, Pastor Serving Christ - Serving Others - Changing Lives Seventh Sunday after Pentecost July 8, 2018 As We Gather Our culture is fascinated with rebels. Characters such as Han Solo, Ferris Bueller, and Katniss Everdeen are not perfect, but we admire how they stand up to authority. Whether being a rebel is good or bad depends on whom one is rebelling against. When the authority is God Almighty, rebels are not looked upon so fondly. Israel rebelled against God, and Ezekiel told them just that. The people of Nazareth rejected Jesus, rebelling against their own hometown prophet. Paul was a rebel himself, first against the followers of Jesus, and then on their behalf. Sin is rebellion against God. Yet God forgives our rebellion through Jesus death and resurrection, turning our rebellion into reconciliation and rejoicing. Despite our weaknesses and inclination to rebel, God s grace comes to us in Jesus, and He is sufficient for us. Please take a minute to fill in your Connection Card. (A=assistant, P=pastor, C=congregation, R=reader) TIME IN THE WORD First Reading Ezekiel 2:1-5 He said to me, Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you. 2 As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. 3 He said: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day. 4 The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, This is what the Sovereign LORD says. 5 And whether they listen or fail to listen for they are a rebellious people they will know that a prophet has been among them. 6 Second Reading 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christwho fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know God knows. 3 And I know that this man whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows 4 was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. 5 I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. 6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool,because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, 7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand A: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 6 th chapter, verses 1-13 C: Glory to You, O Lord. Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. Where did this man get these things? they asked. What s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn t this the carpenter? Isn t this Mary s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren t his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. 4 Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home. 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. 8 These were his instructions: Take nothing for the journey except a staff no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them. 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. 7 Apostles' Creed C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. 8 ADMITTING OUR SIN AND HEARING THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS A: Let us confess our sins together. (Please kneel) C: We confess that we have not always followed Your ways. We have followed too much the desires of our own hearts and have sinned against You. Forgive us Lord. Restore all who are penitent, according to Your promise, in Christ Jesus, our Lord, and for His sake help us to live godly, and righteous lives to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. A: The Lord our God has heard our cry for forgiveness. Therefore, it is my joy and delight that I can tell you that our sins are forgiven in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Please stand HOLY COMMUNION A: This morning we celebrate the Lord s Supper with the elements consecrated by Pastor in the early service. Pax Domini A: The Peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. Sharing of the Peace Holy Communion is a gift from God. It is the Lord s Table to which He invites us. As we prepare to receive the Sacrament, we might ask ourselves the following questions: Do I realize that I am a sinful human being? Do I understand that our Lord gave His life, His body and blood, for me on the cross that I might be forgiven of my sins and in His resurrection raised me to a new life? Do I realize that in the Lord s Supper He gives me His true body and blood that I might be assured of forgiveness and that my faith is strengthened that I might serve my Lord and through Him serve others? If you are a baptized Christian and share these Biblical truths, please join us in the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have not yet received instruction, please come forward for a blessing, crossing your arms over your chest to indicate you are not receiving the elements.
