Tony Durante, Pastor Serving Christ-Serving Others-Changing Lives Quinquagesima Sunday March 3, 2019 As We Gather 356 days and a wake up. Such was the weary prayer of infantrymen as they hoped to survive a nightmarish, one-year tour of duty in the Vietnam War. The church s prayer on this Quinquagesima Sunday is 50 days and a wake up. Quinquagesima is Latin for fiftieth as we mark 50 days until our celebration of Christ s Resurrection a wake up! It is the last Sunday before the 40-day season of Lent. The Lenten worship liturgy takes on a more somber and meditative mood as we reflect on and identify with Jesus warfare against evil in his suffering and death. Today s assigned Gospel reading from Luke 18 takes us to that moment when Jesus turns to head toward Jerusalem and to the war awaiting him there. Please take a minute to fill in your Connection Card. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God be merciful to me, a sinner. It is the Lord s Table to which He invites us. As we prepare to receive the Sacrament, we might ask ourselves the following questions: Do I realize that I am a sinful human being? Do I understand that our Lord gave His life, His body and blood, for me on the cross that I might be forgiven of my sins and in His resurrection raised me to a new life? Do I realize that in the Lord s Supper He gives me His true body and blood that I might be assured of forgiveness and that my faith is strengthened that I might serve my Lord and through Him serve others? If you are a baptized Christian and share these Biblical truths, please join us in the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have not yet been baptized or received instruction, please come forward for a blessing, crossing your arms over your chest to indicate you are not receiving the elements. 10
