When Patrick was about sixteen years old, he was captured as a slave by Irish pirates. He was taken to Ireland, where he was forced to work as a shepherd for six years before he escaped and returned to his family. When Patrick became a priest, he volunteered to go back to Ireland as a missionary to preach the Gospel. As an ordained bishop, he continued his missionary work by establishing monasteries, convents and parishes throughout Ireland. Patrick is revered as the Patron Saint of Ireland, his feast day, March 17 is celebrated all over the world. May The Road Rise Up To Meet You May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." In honour of the Beatitudes the school will have a food drive during Lent in support of the Good Shepherd Centres. Lenten Food Drive During the Lenten season, we are focusing on the good works Jesus did during his lifetime. Jesus worked tirelessly with the poor and disenfranchised to better their lives. The students of St. Luke will model themselves after Christ s example during Lent by taking part in a canned food drive. The Student Council will be collecting canned goods in support of the Good Shepherd. We hope to live our faith during this holy time and help those Christ would have helped himself. Parents Page What can you say besides sound it out? There are many things that you can say to help your child figure out a word. Being flexible in problem solving provides more information to allow the child to be successful. To help a child use meaning (of the story or illustrations): Look at the picture to help yourself Think about what would make sense To help a child use language structure (the way we talk): Does that sound right? Can we say it that way? To help a child use information in print (the way it looks): Look at how the word begins. Read the words up to the tricky word and try it. Say more of the word. Does that sound right to you? To help a child use two sources of information: Think about what would look right and make sense. Think about what would make sense and start like that. A frustrated reader is a reader who is not going to take necessary risk to improve his skills. If your child is struggling after 5-6 seconds, say the word. Praise the child s attempt by saying: I like the way you tried to help yourself. You were nearly right. You noticed it wasn't right. What did you notice? A reader is like an athlete. The more a child reads, the better his or her reading becomes.

The Conference gave students the opportunity to learn about bias and discrimination that exist in our world. This day allowed students to take part in numerous activities to help students live respectfully together and benefit from one another s wisdom and experiences. The students had a fabulous day working together to promote growth in appreciation for sacredness of life and the dignity of human beings created in the image and likeness of God. Thank you Grade 7 s for working so hard! You are the future!! Miss Gennaccaro (Grade 7 Teacher) Catholic School Council News On Tuesday, February 28, 2017 the Catholic School Council made pancakes for all students to celebrate Pancake Tuesday. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE Contact Kelly Duffy-Kariam Ext Heart and Stroke Corner March 2017 You ve been making lunches since September and they are starting to look a little dreary. Maybe your kids aren t finishing them, or they are complaining that it s the same-old, same-old. Here are some tips to help you keep the healthy eating momentum going this year when packing school lunches for your children. Make it bite size: Provide a selection of different foods from each of Canada s Food Guide s Four Food groups. Make their portion sizes small. Try packing minihamburger sliders with slices of tomato and lettuce, or small pita pockets stuffed with tuna and diced cucumber. Think of a rainbow: Make lunches colourful by choosing foods in a variety of colours, which will pack good nutrition too. Sometimes changing something as simple as a green apple to a yellow apple or providing zucchini sticks and grape tomatoes instead of carrots and celery can make lunch more interesting for your little eater. Be equipped. There are terrific plastic, re-usable containers with three divided sections like a Japanese bento box. Kids really enjoy eating out of these containers because in one section they place their veggies, in the second one, a protein such as cubed cheese or diced cooked chicken and in the last one, a fruit or an oatmeal cookie. Thermoses are also a great piece of lunch equipment because you can send hot soups or stews or cold foods such as chicken and pasta salads.

5 News Full of Ourselves The Grade 6 girls will have the opportunity to participate in the Full of Ourselves program with Nurse Julie. The girls will engage in discussions about healthy attitudes and behaviours about eating, exercise, body image and relationships. This great program will be starting up after March Break. Science and Engineering Fair News On Saturday March 4, 2017, some of our intermediate students participated in the system wide Science Fair at Bishop Ryan High School. It was an exciting day for our students who represented us well! We are very proud of you! The Great Big Crunch! This year St. Luke s will be participating in the Great Big Crunch on March 9th at 2:30 pm! What is that you may ask? Well, the Great Big Crunch invites students, teachers and educators to learn more about healthy eating through the apple s journey: from seed, to harvest, to market, to table. FoodShare is a non-profit organization that works with communities and schools to deliver healthy food, and food education, and they are promoting the Big Crunch in our city. We will celebrate this special day as a school community, eating apples with a synchronized crunch to celebrate! As March is National Nutrition Month, The Great Big Crunch is a great way for us to promote and celebrate healthy snacking, while being a part of this cross-canadian initiative. The Health Action Team The Health Action Team (H.A.T.) and Nurse Julie are encouraging students at St. Luke to "Rethink Your Drink"! Why not leave the sugary drinks at home, and bring water to school instead? Water does wonders for your body, including quenching your thirst and flushing out toxins. All students have been given a presentation by the H.A.T. of why drinking less sugary drinks is good for their health, and the best drink choices parents and students can make. As well, the H.A.T. continues to promote Water Only Wednesdays (W.O.W.) and wish all classes good luck in the pursuit of the golden water bottle! CYO News The following teams have finished their season and we congratulate them on their fine efforts and excellent sportsmanship Junior Girls Volleyball (coached by Ms. Persaud & Ms. Jacob) Sr. Girls Volleyball (coached by Miss Gennaccaro & Mrs. Perino) Jr. Boys Basketball ( coached by Ms. Persaud, Ms. Jacob & Ms. Tersigni) Sr. Boys Basketball (coached by Mr. Madalena & Ms. Jacob) We are very proud of our teams! FRESH AIR KIDS - celebration - A free, engaging and interactive event for families, students and the public to learn more about the link between air quality and children s health and what we can all do to reduce air pollution. Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. Nicholas Mancini Centre (44 Hunt St., Hamilton) Highlights: Learn how Fresh Air Kids get students thinking about how to improve air quality through school projects and behaviours. Hear keynote speaker Matthew Adams highlight his research in geography and environmental studies showing a link between poor air quality and the use of cars for travel to and from school. 6 AWARDS ASSEMBLY The Awards Assembly for the month of February was held on Thursday March 2, Each month we recognize students who have demonstrated by their words, actions and care for others a different Catholic Social Teaching. The Catholic Social Teaching for the month of February was COMPASSION. Every person has basic human rights -to live, to work, to have food, clean water, health care, housing and education. We have responsibilities to each other to make sure that these rights are provided and protected. Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a young girl in Lourdes, France in The grotto and the spring where these appearances took place have become a very famous shrine. Every year millions of pilgrims visit this sacred place to pray for healing and a return to fullness of health in body, mind and spirit. People, who are prevented from living human lives because they lack good health, education, employment, housing, and security, need our compassion and commitment to help them receive the basic requirements of a full human life. The Learning Skill that was highlighted during the month of February was ORGANIZATION. Organization is one s ability to devise and follow a plan and process for completing work and tasks. When we are organized, we are effectively able to prioritize and manage our time to complete tasks and achieve our goals. CONGRATULATIONS to all our February Award winners!! The Catholic Social Teaching that will be highlighted during the month of March is COURAGE. As members of one global family, we are committed to the common good and we are responsible for one another. At times it takes courage to speak out on behalf of others, especially others whom we may not know because they are far away. The Learning Skill that we will be focusing on in March is COLLABORATION. Collaboration is one s ability to accept various roles and an equitable share of work in a group. When collaborating with others we respond positively to the ideas, opinions, values and traditions of others. Collaboration builds healthy peer to peer relationships and helps us to work with others to resolve conflict and build a consensus to achieve group goals. Our Awards Assembly for March will be held on Friday March 31, 2017 at 1:00p.m. Consistent attendance at school is critical to student achievement and success. Each month we will continue to recognize students who demonstrate excellent attendance. Restorative Justice At St. Luke Catholic School we continue to implement Restorative Justice Practices. Its philosophy includes the values of responsibility, inclusiveness, openness, trust, hope and healing. It is a model of justice that develops strategies to teach moral and ethical behaviour and teaches youth to accept the consequences of their behaviour and the impact these behaviours have on others. Restorative Justice helps develop a strong sense of empathy and identification with the victim, while facilitating ways to make amends. Finally, youth are taught to feel empowered instead of powerless. There are many advantages to Restorative Justice approaches, including a safer and more effective teaching and learning environment as well as a reduction in interpersonal conflicts. At St. Luke, we believe in the ability of young people to take responsibility for their choices, and Restorative Justice Practices will provide opportunities for our students to do so while maintaining a consistent and inclusive model of justice that shows respect for all parties involved. PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH Lent is a time for us to focus on important practices of our faith: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. During Lent help your children see that prayer is both formal and informal and that God wants to hear from us in many ways; teach them that we can fast from a favourite food or drink, but also from a bad habit or mean spirited action; remind them that almsgiving provides support for those in need and can take the form of money, goods, or time and talent. Lent is about focusing in on how we can be better people and so it is a great teaching tool to help your children grow. (From: Teresa Hartnett, Family Ministry Office, ext. 2250) Learning Commons This month the grade1 students have been working on creating commercials geared towards young children. The students have been utilizing the IPads in making their commercials. The grade 4 students have started an inquiry project on Canada s land form regions. Their final projects will be presented using Powerpoint or Prezi. Following the March Break we will be hosting a tournament for the St. Luke Chess Team. Any students from grades 3-8 who know how to play chess are encouraged to come to the Learning Commons and play. A representative from each grade will be chosen. Listen for announcements after March Break.
