The evening saluted priests, permanent deacons and women religious serving the Dubois and Spencer counties, which make up the East Deanery. The event included surprise presentations to Benedictine Sister Barbara Lynn Schmitz, Prioress of Sisters of st. Benedict in Ferdinand, and Benedictine Father Kurt Stasiak, Archabbot of St. Meinrad Monastery in st. Meinrad. Father John Boeglin, pastor of Jasper's Holy Family Parish and Chaplain ofk of C Jasper Council 1584, called Sister Barbara Lynn and Archabbot Stasiak to the front of the packed room as he announced that the Council was presenting $1,000 to the Benedictine sisters and the Benedictine brothers - and that the Columbian Home Association, which owns and manages the property where Council 1584 meets, was matching each of the awards. Council 1584 Grand Knight Vince Granacher, who served as emcee for the dinner, made the presentations. Earlier in the evening, Knight Tim Jarboe of Jasper provided an update on the Father McGivney Endowment, which is managed by the Dubois County Community Foundation. As part of that report, he announced that $1,000 is being given to support four Diocese of Evansville seminarians from the East Deanery who are attending Bishop Simon Brute College Seminary in Indianapolis - Eric Gelhausen, Joe Paul Hayden, Philip Rogier and Gavin Steckler. He also reported that, as part of a statewide Knights of Columbus initiative, the Knights would present $525 to each of the 92 Indiana seminarians. Following his presentation, Granacher presented a $1,000 donation to the Father McGivney Fund from Jasper Council Sister Barbara Lynn delivered the keynote address for the dinner, and she discussed the history of the Benedictines of Ferdinand as their 150 th Anniversary year wraps up. "God has indeed blessed us," she said, noting that there are 141 Ferdinand Benedictine sisters currently serving in various ministry roles in Indiana, Kentucky and the South American nation of Peru. Father Boeglin then recognized all of the women religious, permanent deacons and priests who are currently serving in Dubois and Spencer counties before making the special presentation to the Benedictine monasteries.

7 V-~rzrtv-r Nor /PEC- ddi? po fl-r'(cfa( J/!5p6?7 Dear Brother Knights and Families, Here we are fast approaching the end of another year of God's grace. Each day, each year, is a gift from God. We must use our time well while we are on earth for the greater glory and honor of God. On November 1st the Catholic Church honors all those deceased persons who are in heaven. It is the feast of All Saints. During the church year we honor significant saints who have made a contribution to the world by their heroic example while they were alive and serving the Lord in word and deed. Each country of the world has their own list of saints for their area. Some saints are celebrated universally every year throughout the world such as St. Nicholas, St. Patrick, and St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus. On All Saints we honor all those persons who have made it into heaven. It is the feast day of my deceased parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends who have entered heaven. We must remember that our friends in the afterlife belong to the Communion of Saints. We often ask for their intercession as we pray to God. We ask them to pray for us and be with us in our journey through life. November 2 nd is a holy day set aside for honoring the dead. In our Catholic Faith we believe that the soul of a person who dies can go to one of three states of being. The first is heaven, where a person dies in a state of perfect grace and goes straight to heaven. The second is hell, where those who die in a state of mortal sin are condemned by their own choices. The intermediate state of being we call purgatory. Purgatory is thought to be where most deceased go and experience the cleansing of their soul before entering heaven. There is scriptural basis for this belief. The primary reference is in 2 Maccabees 12:42 and 12:46. "Turning in supplication, they prayed that the sinful dead might be fully blotted out." "Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin." There are additional references found in Zachariah, Sirach, and the Gospel of Matthew. Jewish tradition reinforces this belief as well. The word purgatory never appears in the Bible, but the reality of it is implied by the Scriptures. On Monday, November 6 th at Holy Family Church at 7:00 p.m. we will remember all those K of C members who have died this past year from our local Jasper Council #1584. Catholics believe that through the prayers of the faithful on earth, the dead are cleansed from their sins. The Old Testament tells us that it is a holy and pious thought to remember the dead. Perhaps one of our deceased members could use our prayers to be cleansed of their sins to enter into heaven. I think that we often forget the power of prayer. On October 24 we held our 5 th Fr. Michael J. McGivney Appreciation Banquet for Religious, Deacons and Priests serving in the tri-counties of Dubois, Spencer and Pike. We had the best attendance ever. The Daughters of Isabella decorated and helped our brother Knights with the evening festivities. Sr. Barbara Lynn Schmitz gave a fine presentation walking us through the 150 years of her monastery at Ferdinand. There were many volunteers who helped make the evening special, like the youth who ushered the guests to their tables and the 4th Degree members who opened our evening and posted the colors. Most of all I want to thank the local Jasper K of C Council #1584 and the Columbian Home Association who made significant financial contributions to the St. Meinrad Archabbey and the Monastery of Immaculate Conception at the end of the evening. The Jasper Knights of Columbus Council #1584 presented a check for $1000 to the Sisters of St. Benedict. Sr. Barbara Lynn OSB, Prioress, accepted the check on behalf of the Sisters. The Columbian Home Association, which owns and manages the property where Council #1584 meets, matched the Council donation with a check also for $1000. St. Meinrad Archabbey received identical gifts of two $1000 checks from Jasper Council #1584 and the Columbian Home Association. Archabbot Kurt Stasiak OSB accepted the check on behalf of the Abbey.
8 / Since this is the last newsletter of the year, I wish to extend my blessings upon your Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas days. I encourage us to be faithful to Sunday worship and to the feast of the Immaculate Conception, the patroness of the United States of America, on Friday, December 8 th. lam Your Chaplain, Fr. John Boeglin
