1 1 News-N-Everything The Official Student Newspaper of Robinson High School Volume 91, Issue December 2013 Black Friday When one thinks of Black Friday, they usually picture huge lines, crowded stores and shoppers fighting over the last waffle-iron on sale, and they d probably be correct in assuming that stores become akin to zoos. The fourth Friday in November has become infamous for big deals and even bigger insights into the beasts within us all. The term Black Friday comes from a term that described when retailers began making a profit. It was widely accepted that retailers didn t profit until after Thanksgiving, and thus were in the red, referring to the color ink that would be used in ledgers. When the stores would begin to make profits, the ink would turn to black, thus coining the term in the black and inspiring Black Friday. Originally, stores would open at 6 a.m. the following morning, and shoppers would be able to leisurely stroll in and purchase the sale items at their own discretion, which seems completely contrary to our perceptions of this holiday today. Black Friday should be the ushering in of the holiday season, inspiring compassion and caring for our fellow man. We can all go out and enjoy the bargains, and the shopping, but we should always remember that the holiday season should be about more than our materialistic side. Will Devin Beta Club Induction This year s Beta Club induction was a wonderful experience. Parents came to take photos as their son or daughter was inducted and Ashtin Midgett shared with everyone some of the benefits of being a Beta. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the Illinois State Beta Club Vice President Michael Akande s speech, which incited more than a few chuckles among the crowd, with his flavorful take on the traditional introductory speech given at the event. We here at the newspaper are proud to congratulate the following students who were inducted at the event: Leah Avery, Jacob Blunier, John Chapman, Darin Cox, Samuel Cunningham, Mara Decker, Heather Duzan, Connor Griffin, Wesley Harrison, Alyssa Hoagland, Melissa Jenkins, Cassidy Jones, Farrah Kearby, Mallory Kent, Jacob Ludwig, Aubyn Medsker, Kasey Meeks, Kylie Meeks, Bradley Midgett, Collin Rains, Jason Richart, Amanda Shafer, Brady Thompson, Emily Trimble, London Toney, Mikayla Wright, Wesley Wright, Yadeli Xolo, and Willem Devin. Matthew Buercklin Tips For Taking Finals Okay, everyone: as a senior here at RHS, I have quite the extensive knowledge of how to prepare and take finals. There are a few simple tips you can follow to make your entire finals experience much more simple and enjoyable. First of all, study. It seems like a very straight forward and obvious point, but just do it. There is no logical reason for a student not to study. The only thing that will come out of studying for a test is an improvement in your grade. Next tip: sleep. Don t stay up all night (or all week, for some of us) to prepare. Be reasonable about the time that you can put into preparing for your final. If you re exhausted, you aren t going to be physically prepared to sit down and take an important test. Tip three, and in my opinion, the most important: calm down. Finals are indeed a big deal and typically have a large impact on your grade, but it is still just a test. It is a piece of paper with some ink on it. We aren t asked to combat a pride of lions with little more than a stick, after all; were just putting some letters on a page. If you ve made it this far, you ve taken many tests, this one is no different. Best of luck, everyone! Study up, get some sleep, and calm down. Destin Finkbiner
