2 We are looking towards activities we can do together to get to know each other better and to do things we may enjoy. Some ideas are- High tea, movie night, games evening, Feilding bus trip to museum, Wairarapa, Quiz night, fashion show, talent night, entertainment night. How much are you willing to pay? This would be a fundraiser type event as well. Any ideas can be put on the clip board at church or given to the office. The committee would want people to assist not only the committee to organise ANY VOLUNTEERS? You can also Viv Hudson at vivs.place@clear.net.nz or Ruth Rushton on randr.rushton@xtra.co.nz. "They are paying for crimes they did not commit..." ANGEL TREE CHRISTMAS GIFT Children who have suffered a very real loss through no fault of their own and on top of this are treated like criminals themselves. It's not their fault that Dad or Mum are in or have been in prison. Yet they're serving time too. The doors that lock prisoners in also lock their sons and daughters out - in a cold and lonely world. Angel Tree Family Care aims: To reduce the potential first time offending for children of prisoners Increase the resilience of families to cope with the challenges that come with having a loved one in prison Angel Tree Christmas Programme... We gain access to more than 3,500 children of prisoners annually. There are 65 locally. Research indicates that children who maintain a relationship between themselves and their parent inside have an improved emotional response to the incarceration. This in turn assists them to focus better in school and perform better academically, reduces truancy and improves their general well-being. The Angel Tree Christmas programme initiates or maintains an existing relationship between the absent parent and the child. Whilst it is a warm fuzzy it also has a very practical application that makes a difference. We receive letters and cards from prisoners, children and caregivers with a message of thanks and expressing how much it means to them. HOW IT ALL WORKS... Every prisoner in the country is given the opportunity to choose to give a Christmas gift to their child(ren). They do this by completing an application form that is available within the prisons. Regional and Area Co-ordinators work together to find 'Partner Groups' that commit to purchasing a number of gifts all valued at $25, or to wrap and/or deliver the gifts locally. Each Partner receives, via their Area Co-ordinator, a package of prepared material so they can display a tag giving the child s name, age, gender and gift choice by family. Then people within each Partner Group take an Angel (tag) and go and purchase the gift, spending $25 on the child. They return these unwrapped, with the Angel (tag) firmly attached. The Area Co-ordinator arranges a Wrapping Day for the area, at which time the gifts are wrapped. It is a fun day where a variety of people can be involved and then the Delivery people take the bags of gifts and make delivery before 15th December. At the Wrapping Day each gift will be wrapped and a Christmas card containing a personal message from their parent inside is attached to the gift. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE A $25 GIFT FOR A LOCAL CHILD, PLEASE SEE THE OFFICE BY 21 October

3 I will tell everyone about your righteousness. All day long I will proclaim your saving power, for I am overwhelmed by how much you have done for me. Psalm 71:15 Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope. Ephesians 3:20 Oh that men (people) would give thanks to the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! Psalm 107:8 WANTED: Long Term Rental from January Either 2 bedroom + office + 2 lounges or a 3 bedroom with 2 lounges. In Levin. In a nice location and we want the sun to shine in it most of the day :) Please contact the office if you are able to help. SERVICES FOR OCTOBER IN THE HALL UNLESS STATED Come along and support these people leading services this month: 2nd Communion Rev. Stuart Grant (CHURCH) 9th 16th Combined 23rd 30th 6th Nov Communion Rosalie Surge At St Mary s Anglican Church Murray Brown (Youth) Paul & Margaret Symonds Rev. Stuart Grant (CHURCH) PARISH COUNCIL 21 SEPTEMBER In Marshalls absence due to sickness, I Chaired Parish Council on Wednesday 21st September when it was pleasing to welcome Stuart back after his sojourn in Europe. As is our custom, we began the meeting with devotions, this month from Joshua 1:1-9. We received and processed matters financial including the Cash flow and Budget for the ensuing year. Council is appreciative of the tremendous amount of work undertaken by our Treasurer Ruth and the additional complexities of Charities Commissions Accountability Reporting as will be seen in the Annual Report. The Property and Works committee continue in their efforts around Earthquake remediation work and progress on disposal of the St Johns Church. We considered matters related to housing for Ian and Jeanette Boddy in readiness for their move to Levin at the beginning of If anyone has suggestions about suitable accommodation please do let us know. As we head toward our Annual General Meeting changes on Parish Council will happen. Three members step down by rotation including Mary MacKay, John Hewitson and Marshall Scott. Parish Council is most appreciative of the contribution each have made to both the business of Council and wider work of the Church in Levin. Three nominations have been received for the Parishes consideration and they are Maurice Waldrom, Paul Kirby and Marshall Scott. Parish Council was delighted to learn about the creative efforts of the young people who recently wrote and produced a short film. Youth around Presbytery Central were challenged to make a 5 minute film based on biblical principles or a faith based story line and enter it to be judged. Rosalie as Executive Director organised things very well and we are proud of her teams combined efforts. It is hoped a screening can be organise in the near future. Some discussions have been underway with the Methodist Mission Resourcing team and its hoped to organise a learning opportunity lead by them in the new year. It was noted Parliament recently passed the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Bill, which came into force on 29 August The Act amends the Shop Trading Hours Repeal Act 1990, which is renames the Shop Trading Hours Act. District Councils have been given power to devise local Easter Sunday shop trading policy, permitting shops to open on Easter Sunday. The new laws give District Councils the task of consulting on and devising policy, something about which Parish Council is somewhat ambivalent There was some discussion around the important role of welcoming and greeting people at Church. We plan on providing a refreshed training for door greeters and hosts in the near future. Shalom

5 PRESBYTERY CENTRAL YOUTH FILMFEST 2016 Just a follow up on and finalise what happened with the youth 5min movie: The 5min movie took about a month to make the costumes which Katrina designed (Ann Williamson and Jillian McKenzie made). We started filming on 31 July 2016 but also realised that we needed to take more filming shots to make sure that there was enough good stuff to make into the film, which there wasn't on the 31 July. It was also hard to get everyone together at one time after that, so filming happened often with little small groups. The BBQs which Jillian organised helped us to all get together and share progress and targets. I also kept in touch with everyone as often as I could via various electronic media. We finished filming with time spare to edit, however that is where a major problem was realised. Our movie camera did not (computer-) talk to the Microsoft moviemaker package for editing videos. I spent hours and hours and hours trying to work it out between the various computer package with the helpful advice from the competition organisers. When I finally sent it in either very late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, I got a text and back from the competition organisers that it was still not accepting. So more time was spent to try for the final time to get it in. The competition copy of our 5min movie was not as it should have been with music and written heading out of alinement with they were supposed to have been and where they were on my original. However by the not-so-prefect 5min version being in at least it was in the competition and all the hard work of everyone's didn't go to waste. On the 3 September LUP had 12 adults go over to the competition film-fest and 2 youth-actors Katrina and myself out of 13 youth who were in the movie went over too. There were 11 entries and there were: * The Line, the switch & the Wardrobe by Tawa Union Wellington (about five short takes on movie themes but won best costumes) * The Split of Bands by Miramar Uniting Wellington (boring in my opinion) * Neighbours at War by Island Bay Presbyterian Wellington (good story and good outcome about loving your emery/neighbours - did win some prizes but not major prize) * My Lighthouse by St Margaret's Presbyterian from Wellington area (they had fun making it but dancing and picnicking by a lighthouse lost me) * The Bread War by Khandallah, Ngaio Uniting Parish & Wadestown Presbyterian Wellington (very good and seemed fun to do - we should perhaps have a bread war for fun!) * Love Leads by Niue St James Presbyterian Newtown/Kilbirnie Wellington (they imitated a church service and won a smaller prize possibly for Theology not 100% sure) * Loving AJ by St John's in the City Presbyterian (EPIC intermediate group) (Good movie about YouTube and came in the top 3 movies) * Negative Love by St John's in the City Presbyterian (THRIVE youth group) (Drawn out and sad but supportive of others) * Love is in the Air by Knox Presbyterian Lower Hutt (my favourite, it is more of a Christian Safety Message than anything, and was one of the top 3 movies). * All you need is a loaf by St Albans Palmerston North (funny, as everyone joined in to follow a loaf of bread on a skateboard, was one of the top 3 movies). * For the Love of Waitarere by St Andrews Waitarere of Levin Uniting Parish (I'm not commenting on this one. We won "Best Sets and Art"). After every third 5min-movies there was a break for games. Katrina was making the most of it and she went on stage twice, one for jokes and one for a spontaneous balloon game. St Albans also put on a BBQ tea salad and there was lots of nice food for everyone. It was a good evening and I am glad that I went. I am not sure now who actually won but it was definitely one of the more higher socially economic areas however the lower socially economic areas had more parent/adult turnout to the show, interesting. Our certificate is attached. Our score was 171/300; being Theme 30/60, Structure-story 21/30, Creativity 31/60, Emotional Impact-Audience Appeal 21/30, Audio-Musical composition 17/30, Cinematography 19/30, Editing 14/30, Xfactor 18/30. In our Credits we gave God Almighty the credit for the Lighting and Special Effects but He didn't win anything yet in all honesty He is responsible for the sets too. In the different film sets there were 6 different farm paddocks around Levin & Horowhenua with similar trees in each paddock (very hard to have found a pre-european paddock without fence but we managed it!), a view of the snow caped hills towards the Trig, end of Hokio Sand Road, Waitarere Beach Road, Waitarere church (which also turned into a 's French Catholic Church and School, Waitarere township, Foxton Rest Home for Jim Mackie to be added into the modern congregational singing, the Foxton Wharf Murals were used as a close-up for the Priest to arrive and get a horse and cart. Scrolls were specialised A4 computer paper with scroll already on it and after typing the text they were enlarged to A3 for Ngaire to hold. An old horse and cart from a library book was photocopied and a black and white reduced photo of Abraham in the Priest costume was combined to show our priest in olden times with his horse and cart. It was a cut and paste but traditional ie with scissors & glue, LOL! 2 black & white photos attached. Katrina Anderson our costume designer's drawing for the costumes for everyone are excellent although not seen in the 5min movie itself but seen in the extra movie information. Photos attached. A Big Thanks to everyone who help us, including Rev Stuart Grant for his black clergy shirt worn by the Catholic Priest under his tunic; Murray Easton for his bagpipe music; Jack Gibson for helping with YouTube music; Sonya Campbell for her traditional Maori cloak; Jim Mackie farms; Wayne Smith farms; and for Ann Williamson and Jillian McKenzie who back us youth up all the way with so many things; and all the other of you who came out to help with crowd scenes etc. We all won this certificate. Kind regards Rosalie Ridley Screenplay writer/movie Director/Movie Editor
