3 THE GRAND MASTER As Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Newfoundland and Labrador, it is my pleasure to extend greetings to all Brethren and their families. This is my first message as Grand Master, since my Installation on October 18, I would like to thank all Brethren for their support on that special day as shown both by the tremendous numbers in attendance and the personal contacts I received and continue to receive. My thanks, also, go out to the Brethren of the Western District who organized a wonderful Communication. I was saddened to hear just prior to my Installation of the passing of my son-in-law, Brother Clarence Squires. This sadness and heavy heart was lessened with the support given by my Brethren. Please accept my sincere thanks. I have chosen as my theme ACTION WITH HUMILI- TY. It is derived from the charge to the Brethren at Installations. I am very humbled to be your Grand Master and promise to fulfill my duties to the best of my ability. I look forward to my tenure as Grand Master with optimism, and when completed, to be able to say I have done my best. We are fast approaching the Christmas season when once again we will celebrate the birth of the greatest gift given to mankind. It is my sincere wish that all Brethren and their families keep Christ in Christmas. I think that we would all agree that Christmas is for children, and, of course, we are all children at heart. As we celebrate during the festive season let us not forget the needy and those who are less fortunate than us. MWB Maxwell Squires chose as his theme REACHING OUT, let us take this to heart. On behalf of the Officers and Brethren of Grand Lodge, my wife Beverly and myself, I wish all Brethren and their families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Fraternally Larry Grandy MWB LARRY B. GRANDY GRAND MASTER Grand Lodge of Newfoundland & Labrador PAGE 02

Order Of Meritorious Service VWB Edgar Thistle being presented this honor in his mother Lodge by MWB Gerald Budden Prior to Avalon Lodge Installation Very Worshipful Brother Edgar Thistle, PGJD (H) Avalon Lodge No. 2 VW Bro. Edgar Thistle was born in St. John s on January 8 th, 1929 and was the second youngest of a family of 9 boys and 3 girls. On November 30 th, 2011, with the passing of his last living sibling, he became the only surviving member of this large family. Edgar graduated from Bishop Field College, St. John s. On August 29 th, 1953 he married Dorothy (Dolly) Bailey and this union produced three children - Bill, Edgar and Heather. Dolly and Edgar have four grandchildren of whom they are extremely proud Bill, Sean, Victoria and Michelle. Edgar s professional life included work in accounting, auditing, management, real estate and for a time owned and operated a store on Mount Cashel Road. He retired as a real estate agent at the age of 81 years. Edgar was initiated in Avalon Lodge on March 11 th, 1954 and became Worshipful Mater in November Becoming an officer and reaching the Chair was quite a feat for brethren at Avalon Lodge s zenith when the membership averaged in excess of 250 and there was a line up of brethren waiting to be invited to take office. It was in Edgar s term that the preliminary work began which resulted in the consecration of a daughter lodge, Neptune. In 1982 he was honoured by the District Grand Lodge (UGLE) by being appointed Past District Junior Grand Deacon. In 1982 he became a founder of Union Lodge and in 1983 he became a founder of First Colony Lodge of Installed Masters. In 2000 Edgar became Worshipful Master of First Colony Lodge and in 2001 he once again assumed the duties of Master of Avalon Lodge. In 2000 he was appointed the Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Montana. Edgar has served all of the Lodges he holds membership in with distinction. In 2002 Edgar was honoured by Grand Lodge with the rank of Past Junior Grand Deacon and in 2014 he was granted Distinguished Service Membership by Avalon Lodge. During his term as Master of First Colony he was instrumental in the creation of the Annual Masonic Divine Service at Masonic Park. This service continues to be held each year and Edgar plays a pivotal role in its success. Edgar joined the Shrine of North America in 1981 and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Mazol Shriners. He has been an active Shriner and these efforts have been supported by the active involvement of Lady Dolly in the Ladies of the Sabre. Of late illness has limited the participation of both. Church History Edgar has been a life-long member of St. Thomas Anglican Church having being baptized, confirmed and married there. For over 50 years he was a member of the choir but recently has had to retire from active participation. As a youth he was a member of the Church Lads Bridge, Anglican Young People s Association and the Dunfield Club. VWB Edgar was surrounded by his family during the presentation Ceremony Community History Edgar has always taken a keen interest his community and shortly after his graduation from high school single handed organized an inter-collegiate dance for students of St. Bonaventure s College, Prince of Wales College and Bishop Field College. In the early 1950 s, working with RW Bro. William A. Neal, he worked on the formation of the Fieldans Athletic Association and became its first Treasurer. During his years as a real estate agent he continued his community involvement by assisting in the raising of funds for various children charities. PAGE 03

7 The President of the Board of General Purposes On behalf of the Board of General Purposes, I greet you and thank you for your continued support of our Grand Lodge. To work together to strengthen and improve our Grand Lodge is a worthy calling. I am pleased to have this opportunity to wish all Brethren and their families and friends a blessed Christmas filled with the joy that this season brings. We are reminded at this special time of the year of our obligation to practice the tenets of our Craft; to be considerate of those less fortunate than ourselves and to be thankful for the blessings of life that we enjoy. It is more blessed to give than to receive. As we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, may the light of the God of love and peace shine on us during this festive Christmas season and always. My wife, Fern, and our family trust that this Christmas will be special for you. From our house to yours, we extend to you and your families our best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a most prosperous and Happy New Year. May the New Year bring good health, prosperity and contentment to you and may brotherly love, relief and truth continue to guide us in our daily lives. Cluney W.G. Vincent RWB Cluney W.G. 10 DIVINE CHURCH SERVICE On November 2, 2014, members of Corner Brook Lodge #11 attended a Divine Service at St. Paul's Anglican Church at Summerside, Bay of Islands. They were accompanied by brethren of Lodge Lomond #32 and family members. It is the practice of the Lodges in Corner Brook to alternate making arrangements for the brethren to parade to Divine Service. This year the arrangements were under the direction of VWBro. Glenn Dicks, Worshipful Master of Corner Brook Lodge #11. The Rev. Malcolm Palmer officiated at the service. Brethren participated in the service by reading the Lessons and Gospel. Thanks are extended to VWBro. Harley Anderson, W Bro. Allen Skanes and VW Bro. Sidney Harris for agreeing to take an active part in the service. Fifteen Brethren and seven family members were in attendance. Included in this number were Mackenzie Mitchell and Katia Hernandez who are the paternal and student daughters of Bro Jeff Mitchell. 12 UNDERSTANDING RITUAL by VWB Barry Thom In 1717 the First Grand Lodge in the world was formed. The majority of its members were of upper class breeding. When a group of Irish weavers, who were Masons from Ireland, (Grand Lodge of Ireland was formed in 1730) tried to visit a lodge under English control, they were refused admission. The claim for barring them out was that they were irregular or clandestine and not the fact that they were of working class status. These Masons were not pleased and in 1751 Laurence Dermott and other Masons started the second Grand Lodge in England. This schism went on until 1813 when the two Grand Lodges decided to settle their differences and form one Grand Lodge. Today it still exists and is known as the United Grand Lodge of England. With the formation of this new Grand Lodge it was necessary to establish a Ritual acceptable to both sides. Remember that almost 100 years had passed and it was a good opportunity to correct errors and make improvements. The Lodge of Reconciliation was formed for this purpose and three years later, in 1816 the Emulation Ritual was born. In 1823 the Emulation Lodge of Improvement was instituted. Their purpose was to keep the ritual pure and unsullied down to the last word. Remember nothing was written down officially, but I am sure that there were many who quietly, under cover, wrote it out. The machine printing of the rituals did not come about until around Today the Emulation Lodge of Improvement meets each Friday, except during summer recess, to exemplify the degrees. If a Brother, occupying the chair of King Solomon, carries out the whole degree by himself and word for word perfect he is given a silver engraved plate with his name, date etc. on it. In 1825 Emulation was brought to Canada, supposedly by word of mouth. Later Masons in Upper Canada petitioned the United Grand Lodge of England to allow them to form their own Grand Lodge. Upper Canada was repeatedly ignored so in 1855 the Grand Lodge of Canada was formed without the blessing of England. The Grand Master of Michigan officiated at its consecration. Five years later the United Grand Lodge of England recognized them better late than never. Now that we have taken a bit of time to understand how the formation of the Ritual known as Emulation came about we can look at variations. Let me point out that the United Grand Lodge of England has only one authorized Ritual and that is Emulation as carried out by the Emulation Lodge of Improvement. It does not enforce its use but all other variations are unauthorized. Before we move on to the Emulation Ritual as today found and used in Canada I would like to point out a few things. I lived in South Africa for a year. Masonry there is truly colourful. The following Grand Lodges operate there: England, Ireland, Scotland and South Africa. I visited an English lodge where there are many Brothers of the Jewish faith. In that lodge a Jewish person does not kneel, when taking his Obligations. He stands in front of the Master s Pedestal with a Yamaka on his head. On the Master s Pedestal lies the VOSL. There is a kneeler attached to the front part, here non-jews kneel and take their Obligations. Now we can move on to Canada. In Newfoundland and Labrador we were under the United Grand Lodge of England until Emulation was and is the same as that authorized English version. Ontario uses Emulation known as the Canadian Working. While it is very similar to Emulation as used in England it has some differences. In 1847 the UGL of England changed the Ritual wording from Freeborn to Freeman, thus violating one of the Ancient Landmarks. In the 1960 s the UGL of England made another change, this time it took out the Penal Clauses from the Obligations. This was never an ancient landmark so it goes under an innovation rather than a violation. Ontario, as most of Canada and the US has kept the wording Freeborn. Ontario has kept the penal clauses in, although modified. Instead of saying in the Obligations my t.c.a. etc. it was changed to ever bearing in mind the traditional penalty, that of having the t.c.a. etc. Ontario has the Lesser Lights around the Altar. This can be found throughout the Maritime Provinces as well as the US. It gives me a great feeling of peace as all lights in the lodge room are extinguished except the Lesser Lights and then the VOSL is closed. In Nova Scotia the Lesser Lights are candles giving the lodge an even closer tie with our ancient Brethren. PAGE 11

13 Ontario, in their Obligations, uses the word hele and not the mispronounced word hail. As many masons from Ontario worked on the Canadian Pacific Railway, Masonry as practiced in Ontario spread across the country. Today Emulation, in Canada is the most commonly used ritual. 14 GREETINGS THE PENNISULAS DISTRICT At this Festive Time of the Year, May Good Will and Peace on Earth be granted to All People May this Joyous Season bring you Happiness as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Wishing You and our Family A very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. CENTRAL DISTRICT RW Bro. Bill Welsh District Grand Master RW Bro. Norman Genge District Grand Master As we approach every Christmas Season, our minds traditionally reflect on what we have interpreted over the years to the true message. Essentially, in my estimation it is love and appreciation; whether we choose to interpret it as peace and goodwill toward men is perfectly acceptable. For me, it is to give up of oneself to think as best I can, only of others and how I can bring the greatest happiness to others. Should you be fortunate enough to be surrounded with the presence of family in your gatherings this Holy Interval then you will be truly blessed. For some of you your family may be spread across this Country, take comfort in the fact that they are close within your hearts. There is and always should be a time of celebration, but at the same time let us not forget those among us who may be less fortunate. Troubled hearts because of the passing of loved ones or failing health make us equally less fortunate as those we think to be financially depressed. Charity does not necessarily come in the form of money it can come in the form of a warm and sincere word of kindness. Reach out to each as best you can. If we can all epitomize the hallmarks of Freemasonry during this Christmas then I shall content myself in the knowledge that we have distinguished ourselves as Masons. PAGE 13

15 WESTERN DISTRICT RW Bro. Lloyd Walters District Grand Master Peace on earth, good will to all "men" is a common theme we hear expressed during the Christmas season. Yet, as we look around we can see many examples where neither of those two great sentiments are being practised. The world seems to have tilted farther on its axis and moved even further from a state of balance. The ideals of tolerance, love for each other and all mankind and the necessity of living a moral and upright life seem to have been lost by many. Yet there is hope. As our thoughts turn to family, friends, and those less fortunate, let us all reflect on how fortunate we are and how appropriate the Masonic belief in brotherly love, relief and truth are at this particular time of year. Let it be our guide to our responsibility to those around us and to all humanity. If man's reverence for God is best exemplified by his actions toward his fellow man we are all required at this time of year to be charitable and to reach out to those in need. Let us all pledge to extend those great Masonic principles throughout the coming years by introducing these same family and friends and the broader community to Freemasonry. It is only through "good men" that our world will change and develop into the kind of society where brotherly love for all mankind, peace on earth and truth through knowledge will prevail. To all of my brethren in Freemasonry I wish you a joyous, peaceful and happy Christmas season. LABRADOR DISTRICT As we celebrate this Christmas Season, I wish to extend a very warm Seasons Greetings and Merry Christmas to all Masons, their families, and loved ones. I wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. As we enjoy the Festive Season with our friends and loved ones, let us be mindful of those less fortunate, and extend a hand in Brotherly Love and Friendship whenever possible. From myself, Lady Amanda, Olivia, and Ian, together with all the Masons of Labrador District, Merry Christmas. VW Bro. 16 AVALON DISTRICT As we near the Christmas Season let us keep in mind all those less fortunate and recall some of our great Masonic teachings and put them into practice. On behalf of Linda, and our family, we wish you and your families all the joy, peace and happiness of the season and prosperity in the new year. Sincerely John RW Bro John Adams District Grand Master Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Fifty Years of Funding To Solve Puzzles of the Mind The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation is a Canadian charity national in scope and created by Scottish Rite Freemasons in It is funded by donations and bequests from members and friends. From its inception the Foundation has concentrated its efforts in support of research into the causes of, treatment and hopefully cures for what it refers to as puzzles of the mind. It primarily targets dementia and Alzheimer s in the adult population and autism and dyslexia in our youth. Each year the Foundation provides funding from the income earned by its capital endowment funds to aid medical research into the causes of these afflictions. In its 50 th anniversary year, The Foundation has launched an ambitious $1 million fundraising campaign to increase its capital funds and thereby enhance its ability to apply increased earned income to medical research. In addition, the campaign also raises capital funds to be applied to the benefit of the eight Learning Centres across Canada that supply free tutoring in the Orton-Gillingham method to children with dyslexia. Scottish Rite Freemasons comprise forty-six Valleys across Canada, including the Valley of St. John s. This local Valley has supported continuously the efforts of the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation to make meaningful changes in the lives of both young and old, usually in circumstances unknown to most people. The afflictions targeted by the Foundation s support of research and of Scottish Rite Learning Centres impact too many of our friends and families. To assist the Foundation s efforts on our behalf and to celebrate meaningfully its contributions over the last fifty years to the general good, the Valley is requesting those who can, to make a donation to the Foundation to aid this important work. For more information regarding the work of the Foundation and to learn how you can donate to its campaign, the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation office can be contacted at or its website can be found at PAGE 15

19 As fall approaches, so starts another busy period in Masonry. Within each jurisdiction there are lodge meetings, visitations, committee work etc. For Grand Lodge, this time of year is even busier due to the Western District Installation and our Annual Communication.. Regardless of the level of participation, it s a labor of love. RW Bro. Daniel R. Frampton PGSW Editor This past September our new Grand Master asked if I would continue to serve as editor of this newsletter during his term of office. To be honest I was humbled and honored to do so. This will be my 11 th year working on this newsletter, the past 8 as your loyal editor. That being said, I cannot do it alone. I want to thank all those who have contributed articles, pictures and ideas as well as the editorial staff who have collectively enabled us to put together a great publication which in turn provides great exposure of our wonderful fraternity both within the province and to other jurisdictions around the globe. As the Christmas Season begins, both my wife Wanda and I, would like to wish you all a wonderful and joyous Christmas and a Happy a safe New Year.
