4 WELCA FEBRUARY 2017 Picture this: Your family has belonged to the same church all your life. One morning you wake up and the church is gone. This happened to the Henrytown Lutheran Church of near Canton, MN. Their church building burned to the ground. This happened about 2 years ago, Nothing much was left! It so happened we had purchased new dishes for our kitchen. The board was pondered what to do with the old ones. A thought appeared to give them to Henrytown. A couple from the congregation came to pick them up. We shared coffee and cookies with them. They were so very sad about their loss, very grateful to begin the path back to a new church. Words are hard to find to express how it made us feel. According to a Post Bulletin article of 12/28/16, their new church is very close completion. Their words: God continues to bless us. We are getting excited to be home again. I feel our WELCA was a small part of that! Jan. board meeting a lengthy discussion was held consisting of planning our new year and planning ways to contribute more to 3R project. A donation of $1000 has been given to 3R. Until next time, Looking forward to spring! 5 United Redeemer Lutheran Church 2017 Directory Information This year we will be creating an updated directory. The last one was done in 2011 and due to changes that take place for the congregation it becomes necessary to renew it every so many years. The directory will be produced by Life Touch. This company will be taking the photos of the members and construct a directory at no cost to the church. A church committee including Jessica Ottem, Jess Hoeper, Peggy Keller & Roger Rueckert are organizing the effort. In order to make this a success we will need your cooperation. When complete directories will be given to the families who had their pictures taken and the company will update it as needed for the next 4 years. Listed below are points of note regarding the scheduling of the photo sessions: Jessica and Jess will be overseeing the scheduling process. There will be two ways of scheduling; One is via online by connecting to a link on our church web site. And two is via the hand sign up method at a designated location and time. Announcements will be made about the photo session sign ups. The photo session dates and times are scheduled as follows: Friday March 3 (2pm-9pm) Saturday March 4 (9am-3pm) Thursday March 30 (2pm-9pm) Friday March 31 (2pm-9pm) Tuesday June 6 (2pm-9pm) Wednesday June 7 (2pm-9pm) Looking for Photo of Church Events! 6 Sunday Fellowship and Forum It looks like our kitchen is up and running. What a great look and setting we now have to enjoy drinking coffee and eating cookies. As we journey to the second month of the year, we continue our Reformation journey. We will continue throughout the year using DVD s and discussions to talk about Luther. All are welcome for coffee and cookies. Please feel free to stay for the forum part of our morning. What does our February journey look like? 2/5: Coffee and conversation, unless we find a surprise presenter!! 2/12: We explore another DVD looking at Reformation Roots. Session # 2 "From Bondage to Freedom". Discussions lead by Nathan Hellyer. 2/19: We will have a travelogue of sorts. Charlie and Diane Nelson journeyed to China to visit their son Jonathan and his wife Deanna who were living there. They promise some fun pictures! 2/25: Plans for this date are still being worked on. I know that I am repeating myself but want to remind folks, making the coffee and putting out the cookies is dependent upon volunteers. A sign-up sheet is available and is passed about on each Sunday to fill up our spots. Please feel free to volunteer. As always, ideas, information and suggestions are welcome. Thank-you to all for your attendance and continued support. SFF Committee ACOLYTES AND URLC Acolytes are an important part of our worship at URLC. Beginning with our seventh graders they start their journey towards confirmation and being an acolyte is part of that journey. Eighth graders continue to serve as acolytes until they enter ninth grade and are confirmed. I meet with the acolytes in early November to give them an orientation as to what their responsibilities are. I try to impress upon them that by lighting the candles they are letting the congregation know that the service is about to begin. I ask that they pause momentarily before the altar to kind of set the mood. I also tell them about the collection plates and helping with communion if need be. While acting as an acolyte I ask that they wear nice shoes and present themselves well. If they have any questions before or during the service, they can ask Pastor Marggi and she will help them out or remind them. At the time of the orientation they can practice lighting the candles and the candle lighter itself. I encourage them to try on the robes. They can ask questions. Do they remember everything they were told? Probably not. They are given the acolyting schedule at the beginning of confirmation. Cindy W gives them reminders as to when they are scheduled. They are supposed to find someone to change with if they can t make it on a particular Sunday. Does it always go as planned? Probably not. As congregation members we notice when only one might be present or maybe no one shows up. Maybe they need to find transportation. Or perhaps they just didn t look at the schedule. There could be a variety of reasons. Why do I write this note? I d like to encourage congregation members to take the time to thank these young men and women for the job they do. Let them know you notice them and tell them they are important. Sure they might forget to get the collection plates either at the time of the offering or receiving them at the end. Help them out. They are not responsible for keeping oil in the candles or the candle lighter so if they come out and light the candles with the small igniter, I consider that resourceful!! We want to keep these young folks active and involved. Take the time to thank them for all they do. Thank you, Genella Mussell
