1 WEEKEND UPDATE FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2016 BUNCO SUNDAY AFTERNOON The Fellowship Committee invites you to join us for Bunco this Sunday, January 24 from 3:00 5:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Snacks and drinks will be provided. For those of you who don t already play, Bunco is a social dice game involving primarily luck with simple rules and scoring. This will be a fun afternoon to beat the cold and enjoy some fellowship together. CURRENT WORSHIP SERIES The season of Epiphany is about being deepened in our knowledge and experience of the living God. This year s Epiphany sermon series will focus on how we can experience God more genuinely and tangibly in the sacraments. We ll be reflecting each week on what it means for us to experience God s real presence right here, right now through the sacraments. Let s Taste and See that the Lord is Good! January 24 Living Out Our Baptism Colossians 3:1-17 January 31 The Lord s Supper: God s Presence and Nourishment for the Journey Exodus 12-13; 1 Cor. 10:16-17, 11:23-26 Communion Celebrated February 7 Receiving and Being the Body of Christ 1 Cor. 11:17-22, 27-34, 12:1-13 Communion Celebrated SCRIPTURE FOR SUNDAY, JANUARY 24, 2016 Colossians 3:1-17 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3 for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. 7 These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. 8 But now you must get rid of all such things anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices 10 and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11 In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all

2 and in all! 12 As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FOR ALL AGES 9:30-10:30 a.m. EACH SUNDAY Children: Our Preschoolers (3 & 4 year-olds) and Elementary Ages (K-5) are diving into Deep Blue, a weekly adventure through the Bible. Older children enjoy an engaging large group/small group break-out format. Our youngest children (birth-2 years old) get to hear a Bible story each Sunday in Childcare. Youth: Junior High youth (6 th & 7 th graders) meet in Lower Knox and High School youth (9 th -12 th graders) meet in Lower Witherspoon each week for faith conversations that are relevant to everyday life and concerns. Adults: We have three study groups meeting this Sunday: a Bible Study Class discussing Sacred Gifts and Holy Gatherings. This class is exploring the themes of Four Weddings and a Funeral in January (Calvin 203); an Open Door Class is continuing the series using Mayberry TV show episodes. Class Reunion is this week s lesson. Bible readings are Matthew 5. The class will watch the video, read the passages and discuss the theme of Mercy from the beatitudes. (Calvin 202); the Theology Class will begin discussing Evangelical Theology: An Introduction by Karl Barth." In this concise presentation of evangelical theology-- the theology that first received expression in the New Testament writings and was later rediscovered by the Reformation--Barth discusses the place of theology, theological existence, the threat to theology, and theological work (Calvin 201).
