3 Expectations, Goals, and Commitments Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth Timothy 2:15 Our role as believers is to bring glory to God by bearing much fruit (John 15:8). It is our hope that we will see a generation of young people committed to seeking God and enjoying Him forever. We feel a consistent and increasing knowledge and intake of God s word is one of the keys to a fruitful life in Christ. That being said, we have found that a few expectations need to be met and kept for each person in your group to thrive in their study of the Scriptures. Expectations 1. To come to your Bible study every week 2. To come to your Bible study on time 3. To come to your Bible study having completed the previous week s content 4. To have your scripture memory verse memorized 5. To meet with Jesus as you study the content Goals vs. Commitments The difference between a goal and a commitment lies within the resolve of the person to get the task done. A goal is something you hope to get done, where as a commitment is something you are going to get done no matter what else! We are asking that you commit to these expectations, and that you will get them done, not simply make them something to shoot for. We are also convinced this is for your best, and it will allow you to get the most out of the time you put into this Bible study. This 9- week study will be the most effective when you commit to attending and interacting during the discussions each week in your small group. Ask God to give you an open heart to His Word, to the leader(s) of your study, and to the others in your group. As a group, brainstorm any additional expectations you would like to have for your group this semester. 3

4 Colossians Overview Colossians is dated during Paul's first imprisonment in Rome, where he spent at least two years under house arrest (see Ac 28:16-31). Some have argued that Paul wrote Colossians from Ephesus or Caesarea, but most of the evidence favors Rome as the place where Paul penned all the Prison Letters (Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians and Philemon). Colossians is dated around a.d. 60, in the same year as Ephesians and Philemon. As a Bible study, read through the book of Colossians out loud in one translation. Now answer the following questions out loud and record useful discoveries on the next page: Historical background Who is the author(s)? What do you learn about them? Who is the audience? What do you learn about them? What is the author s relationship to the audience? Survey What key words, expressions, or phrases did you find? What are major and minor themes exist? 6 How to go about Studies 1-7 As you open to each Bible study, you ll see the Bible text surrounded by numbers, which are ordered steps to follow, and related questions. We ve given you two pages for each passage to give you plenty of room, but you might find the steps seem to hop back and forth between the pages. These are there to help you in the discovery process, but are laid out in such a way that when you finish, your study and notes will be organized summary statements on the left; more general observations on the left. But before you begin the steps, take some time to pray that God may open your eyes to His Word. Step 1 The Text Read the text underlining and highlighting key words. Circle words, underline them, and link them. Pull out colored pencils to really draw out key words. Step 2 Observations and Questions Don t worry about application yet. Simply make a ton of observations. Start with the most obvious ones. What are key words? What are the key teachings? What kind of tone do you pick up? Which conjunction words are used and why? What s compared and contrasted? What do you learn about the audience, the writer, Christ, etc? Step 3 Paragraph title and summary For each paragraph, use key words from it to give it a title. See if you can keep it to three words or less. Then, write a short one- sentence summary of the paragraph below the title. You will use your paragraph titles for the book summary, so this step is important. Step 4 Chapter theme and central teaching Write out a paragraph or so answering the following questions: Why did the author write this? What was the author s original application for the people? Another way to ask those questions is: What is the main intent of the passage? Where is the author trying to take his audience? Step 5 Basic passage Is there a verse that seems to carry the weight of the passage? Pick a verse from the passage that best summarizes the passage. This is not to be confused with the verse you like the best. Step 6 Title Give the passage a title. Again see if you can use key words and keep it short. Step 7 Application Now that you ve spent some serious time in the passage, how might you put what you ve discovered into practice? See if you can make it specific, tangible, and measurable, not something like, Be a better person, which is a nice ideal but is pretty vague. In steps 1-6, you should be able to discover a key principle or two that applied to the original audience. Principles are timeless. Simply bring the principle into our modern context and several applications should become apparent. As always, pray, asking for the Lord s guidance. He ll keep you from making some wacko application! 6

He is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Colossians 2:13-23 seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow. 2. Observations and Questions 20 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. 5. 30 Book Summary Part 2 Major doctrines What were the major doctrines and themes covered in the book of Colossians? By the way, doctrines are positions given by the Bible regarding God, Jesus, and Christian living. So for instance, what does this book say about the deity of Christ? List several doctrines and themes from this book. Book Summary If you had to give someone the cliff notes version of the book of Colossians, what would you say? Unique portrait of Christ Every book in the New Testament gives a unique picture of Christ. For instance, Jesus is seen as a servant in the book of Mark. But what about Colossians? How is Jesus portrayed? Key Verse Which verse, in your opinion, best carries the weight of the entire book? Application Make one overall application from the book of Colossians. Remember to make it specific, tangible, and measurable. Look over the previous Bible studies and see if there are any themes in your applications. 30
