Calvary Chapel South Bay Women s Bible Study A Woman of Virtue the just shall live by faith... Romans 1:17 Lesson 10 Romans 8:1-4 Freedom From Guilt and Shame Romans 8 is the Woman of Virtue s Declaration of Freedom you are forever set free from guilt and shame. Over the next several weeks as we study this chapter we will come to learn and understand the freedoms we enjoy because of our union with Jesus Christ. If anyone is struggling with depression there s good news for you you re in the right place, for this chapter contains the real antidote for depression. You ll come to discover that the wonderful truths located here in chapter eight will set you free from anything that has haunted you in the past, set you free from anything you re anxious about in the future and set you free from anything presently weighing you down. Begin your lesson with a prayer. Ask the Lord to give you insight into His Word this week so you will fully understand the freedom you have in Christ. Memorize This Scripture And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath He reconciled. Colossians 1:21 1. Read Romans 8:1. Define the word condemnation from a dictionary. 2. What is the only requirement given if we want to be free from condemnation? 3. God s Word boldly declares that there is no condemnation. What does this phrase mean to you? 4. The word condemnation pertains to a criminal on death row. They are guilty and the punishment they deserve is death. The same is true spiritually for us before we come to Christ. Apart from Christ the law condemns us to death. Read Romans 8:2,4. Notice the phrase Spirit of life. When Jesus comes into our heart He brings to us freedom and the Spirit of life. From Galatians 5:22,23 what kind of life does the Holy Spirit produce in us? Women s Ministry of Calvary Chapel South Bay, S. Vermont Ave., Gardena, CA (310)

5. Read Romans 8:3. Why couldn t the law free us? 6. Romans 7 described how the law of sin brought about our spiritual death. What has God done to free us from the law of sin and death? (Romans 8:3) 7. What happened when Christ took our place? See 2 Corinthians 5: In Adam, we were condemned. In Christ, there is no condemnation! For greater understanding into what this awesome truth means, read John 8:1-11. Now answer the questions below. a. Who was the condemned prisoner and what was the crime? b. Who was the Judge? c. What was the outcome of her trial? d. With what word of caution did Jesus dismiss her with and what do you think that meant? 9. How will 1 John 3:20 help you when you are struggling with shame, guilt or condemned? 10. Paul is going to mention the Spirit nineteen times in chapter 8 of Romans! We desperately need the Holy Spirit to help us walk in a way that pleases the Lord. What one thing did the Spirit speak to your heart about in this lesson?

Calvary Chapel South Bay Women s Bible Study A Woman of Virtue the just shall live by faith... Romans 1:17 Lesson 11 Romans 8:5-13 Freedom From Defeat Now because of what Christ Jesus has done for us there is no obligation to the old nature, so the believer can live in victory! We no longer have to serve our flesh and its carnal desires but instead we can choose to listen to the Spirit of God. As a daughter of God you have the Holy Spirit living within you. He dwells in you in other words, He has made Himself at home in you. But it is not enough for you to just have the Spirit; the Spirit must have you! Only then will you experience the abundant, victorious life that is yours in Christ. With the power of the Holy Spirit at work you will be able to walk away from bad habits, sinful desires and anything that controls you. You ll move from a lifestyle of pleasing yourself to one of pleasing God. Pause and pray. Spend a few moments thanking God for the gift of His Spirit and the difference He makes in your life. Memorize This Scripture But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 1. Read Romans 8:5-7 and notice that the word mind is mentioned over and over. To see this mind more clearly, complete the phrases below by filling in the blanks. a. Verse 5 after the flesh after the Spirit b. Verse 6 carnally minded is spiritually minded is c. Verse 7 the carnal mind is 2. In verses 5-7 there is a war going on. It s a war between our flesh and Spirit. Galatians 5:17 further describes this war to us. What do you learn? 3. What is the result of being spiritually minded? (v.6) Women s Ministry of Calvary Chapel South Bay, S. Vermont Ave., Gardena, CA (310)

4. What is the result of being controlled by the flesh? (v.8) 5. Explain in your own words what the phrase in the Spirit (v.9) means? 6. Read Romans 8: When the Spirit dwells in you He does a great work. Look up the verses below to gain a greater understanding of this work. What do you learn? a. Luke 4:18-19 b. Galatians 5:22-23 c. John 16: When I walk in the Spirit it means that I m allowing the Holy Spirit to control me. From the scriptures below what is the result of a Spirit controlled life? a. Ephesians 4:30 b. Ephesians 5:18 c. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 8. We are all in debt to something or someone. According to Romans 8:12-13 what two things do we have a choice of being a debtor to? 9. If you want to live a life free from defeat then according to verse 13 you must mortify the deeds of the body. Practically speaking what does this mean? 10. After completing today s lesson record an insight that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind from these verses.

Calvary Chapel South Bay Women s Bible Study A Woman of Virtue the just shall live by faith... Romans 1:17 Lesson 12 Romans 8:14-17 Freedom From Fear Too many believers are trying to fight bad habits and overcome the bondage of fear on their own and it s exhausting. When you walk into a dark room, you don t stand there in the darkness screaming, or stumble around looking for things. You simply turn on the light. One of the things that makes studying Romans 8 so thrilling is the awesome truths contained in it about our relationship with the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. This week as we study God s Word you are going to see things about yourself and things about the Lord in a very different light. You ll come to understand in a greater way the deep, deep love that your Heavenly Father has for you. Begin your lesson with a prayer. Ask the Lord to reveal to you by the bright light of His Spirit any area of bondage to fear that He wants to deliver you from. Now thank Him for all the wonderful benefits you experience as a result of being a daughter of God! Memorize This Scripture For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 1. The Spirit is at work in our lives in many different ways. In the last lesson we learned that He gives us victory over the flesh. Read Romans 8:14. What else does the Spirit do for us? 2. In our previous lessons we have come to the wonderful realization that we are no longer in bondage to the law nor are we any longer in bondage to the flesh. Now in Romans 8:15 we discover another area of bondage that we have been delivered from. What is it? 3. Fear is a horrible bondage. It is one of the weapons that the enemy uses most often against God s children because it literally paralyzes them and renders them ineffective for God s kingdom. Look up the scriptures below. What do you learn that will help you overcome your fears? a. Isaiah 41:10 b. Isaiah 54:4 c. Psalm 23:4 Women s Ministry of Calvary Chapel South Bay, S. Vermont Ave., Gardena, CA (310)

4. The Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of adoption according to verse 15. The word adoption here means being placed as an adult child. We come into God s family by birth. But the instant we are born again God adopts us and gives us all the spiritual blessings of an adult child. According to verse 17 you are joint-heirs with Christ. What do you think this means? 5. What heartfelt cry does the Spirit of God produce in us, knowing we are God s daughters? (v.15) 6. The word Abba in Hebrew is the equivalent to Daddy or Papa. How does knowing that God is your Abba Father help you to conquer your fears? 7. According to verse 15 you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear. Your Abba Father has delivered you! From Psalm 34:17-19 what insight do you learn about what He delivers you from? 8. An adopted child is chosen. Consider the awesome thought that you have been chosen by the God of the universe. You have been chosen by Almighty God who knew you before you even existed. That means He knew everything about your life and He still chose you! Wow! Look up the scriptures below so you can get to know your Father in a greater way. What do you discover? a. John 14:21 b. 2 Corinthians 1:3 c. 1 Peter 1:3 9. Read Romans 8:16. Who bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God? 10. Reflect on this week s lesson and share an eternal treasure for which you are deeply grateful.

Calvary Chapel South Bay Women s Bible Study A Woman of Virtue the just shall live by faith... Romans 1:17 Lesson 13 Romans 8:18-27 Freedom From Discouragement Romans 8 continues to proclaim powerful truths about our freedom in Christ Jesus. In our lesson this week we will study several practical truths necessary in becoming a woman who s freed from discouragement. In this life we can be sure that we ll face heartaches, sorrows and troubles. But we can stand secure in knowing that if something touches us, then it has come through our heavenly Father s loving hands and it has an eternal purpose. For the Woman of Virtue there is no trouble too great because she s been given the Holy Spirit to help her in every way. Take time to pray right now before you begin doing your homework. Specifically ask the Lord to help you to yield to the leading of His Spirit. Express your eternal gratitude to the Lord for giving you His Spirit to share the burdens of this life. Memorize This Scripture These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 1. There are three privileges for God s beloved daughters mentioned in verses You ve already learned the first two: you are a child of God and an heir of God. What is the third privilege mentioned? (v.18) 2. Read Philippians 1:29. Why can we consider it a privilege to suffer as a Christian? 3. In verse 18 Paul says that our present sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. To further understand this principle, read 2 Corinthians 4: What do you learn from these verses that will guard you from becoming discouraged during difficult times? Women s Ministry of Calvary Chapel South Bay, S. Vermont Ave., Gardena, CA (310)

4. It hardly seems appropriate to consider suffering a privilege and yet to the Christian it is. We have a suffering Savior and it is our privilege to be like Him. Look up the scriptures below and share any insight you gain about suffering. a. Acts 5:40,41 b. 1 Peter 2:20,21 c. Galatian 6:17 5. Read Romans 8:20. The word vanity means emptiness. Paul is emphasizing the fact that we have been created with a hole in our heart and nothing will satisfy us apart from Christ. How does Colossians 2:10 confirm this truth? 6. One day there will be no more tears or suffering. But until that glorious day when the King comes back there s a lot of groaning. Who does Romans 8:21-26 say is groaning? (v.22,23,26) 7. Read Romans 8: Even though we groan in this life because of sin, suffering, heartache and trials, we are not without hope! The word hope is mentioned several times in this portion of scripture and for the most part refers to the future. According to 1 John 3:3 why is it so important for the Woman of Virtue to have this future hope? 8. The phrase helpeth our infirmities in verse 26 literally means to lend a hand. No wonder we can be free from discouragement we have the Holy Spirit to help us! Read Romans 8:26-27 and share the different ways that the Holy Spirit helps us. 9. From the verses below why does the Holy Spirit have to help us in our prayer life? a. James 4:3 b. Matthew 26:41 c. Ephesians 6: What one truth did you discover in this homework lesson that has encouraged you the most and why?

Calvary Chapel South Bay Women s Bible Study A Woman of Virtue the just shall live by faith... Romans 1:17 Lesson 14 Romans 8:28-39 Freedom From Insecurity The emphasis of this final portion of scripture in Romans 8 is on the security of the believer. We do not need to fear the past, present, or future because we are secure in the love of Christ. Because of what Jesus Christ has done for us there will never be anything to separate us from His love. The Woman of Virtue needs to enter into each new day confident that God is for her. There is no need for her to walk in insecurity. There is no need for her to question God s love when difficulties come. Rather she must come to trust that everything that happens in her life is according to the eternal plan of her all-wise, all-powerful and all-loving Father. No wonder we can declare that we are free from insecurity. Stop and pray right now. Thank the Lord for His plan for your life. Ask Him to help you to cooperate with this plan even when you don t understand it. Memorize This Scripture Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 1. Love is an important word in these paragraphs. To whose love does each of the following references refer? a. Romans 8:28 b. Romans 8:35 c. Romans 8:39 2. Read Romans 8: Romans 8:28 is one of the most reassuring scriptures a Christian can know. In the maze of life s triumphs and tragedies, joys and sorrows, it brings absolute assurance that nothing is wasted or without purpose. What does Romans 8:28 say we know? 3. In order for me to claim the powerful promise of verse 28 there are two conditions. What are they? Women s Ministry of Calvary Chapel South Bay, S. Vermont Ave., Gardena, CA (310)

4. Verse 28 speaks of for good and His purpose. What is God s good purpose for us according to verse 29? 5. How do these verses in Romans 8:28-29 affect your perspective concerning the heartaches and seeming disasters that you face in life? 6. Foreknow in verse 29 refers to God s knowledge beforehand. This verse makes it clear that God knows us better than we know ourselves. There s nothing about your past, present, or future God does not know about you. How does this encourage you? Answer from the following scriptures: a. Psalm 139:1-4 b. Psalm 139:7-10 c. Psalm 139: Verse 31 literally reads, Since God is for us, who can be against us? God views His daughters very highly and He loves His daughters very deeply. Share one way you know God is for you from Romans 8: The norm for A Woman of Virtue is to be walking in victory. In spite of all the things mentioned in verses 35 and 36, Paul declares in verse 37 that we are more than conquerors. This means that in the midst of trials and anguish or even death we triumph. How do the following verses support this? a. 1 Corinthians 15:57,58 b. 2 Corinthians 2:14 c. 1 John 5:4,5 9. When we face trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger or even the threat of death these things can cause us to question God s love for us. State the powerful, comforting, central truth from Romans 8:35-39 and express what this means to you. 10. Settle it once and for all God is for you! How was this confirmed as you studied Romans 8 this week?

Calvary Chapel South Bay Women s Bible Study A Woman of Virtue the just shall live by faith... Romans 1:17 Lesson 15 Romans 9,10 & 11 Your Purpose In Life Chapters 9-11 have much to do with the history of Israel. Although they were God s chosen people they had rejected Jesus Christ as the Messiah. But their rejection of Christ did not deny the faithfulness of God. Paul had such a burden for the Jewish nation and his passion is revealed throughout the chapters we are studying this week. It might be easy to overlook this portion of scripture and think it is not relevant to you but don t be fooled it is very much for you! As you study, you will get an up close look at the heart of Jesus. Then as you recall He s the same yesterday, today and forever you ll realize that what He did for the Jews He will do for you, too. God is still faithful, righteous, just, and gracious and He can be fully depended upon to accomplish His purpose and keep His promises. Start today off with a prayer. Ask the Lord to make clear His purpose for your life as you open His Word. Memorize This Scripture I will call them My people, which were not My people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. Romans 9:25 1. Why did God choose Israel as His very own? (Deuteronomy 7:6-8) 2. God did not choose Israel because they were more righteous or holy or special than other people. He chose them to reveal the extent of His grace, mercy and kindness. Look up 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 and share what you learn about who God chooses to use today. 3. It wasn t unfamiliar for the Jews to understand the relationship between the potter and the clay because it was part of the village life of that day. For this reason Paul uses this illustration to help the people understand their relationship to the Lord. Read Rom. 9: What do the following verses say about the potter and the clay? a. Isaiah 29:16 b. Isaiah 64:8 c. Jeremiah 18:6 Women s Ministry of Calvary Chapel South Bay, S. Vermont Ave., Gardena, CA (310)

4. Read Romans 9: Part of the beauty of God s grace is that He doesn t just reach out to the Jews. We are now included in His salvation plan. As someone who once was separated from God and condemned, how do you respond to God s description of you as my people, beloved and children of the living God? 5. Many people today believe that religious zeal and sincerity are all a person needs to be saved. How would you respond to this belief based on Romans 10:1-4? 6. According to Romans 10:9,10 how are we saved? Personal Jesus is not known through theology or philosophy, but simply through childlike faith in Him. Do you believe in your heart that Jesus is risen, that He died for your sins and is alive? If so, confess in prayer your desire to know Him as your personal Savior. Ask Him to come into your heart, forgive you of your sins and to show you His plan for your life. 7. There is a call for every Christian woman in Romans 10: Summarize it in your own words. 8. Jesus is Lord of all and for all. Absolutely anyone can be rescued and brought out of darkness into His marvelous light. You are part of God s plan to reach the perishing. From the scriptures below, share what you learn about your call. a. Isaiah 6:8 b. Isaiah 52:7 c. Acts 1: Although Israel has rejected God, He has not rejected them. Because of this Paul breaks out in praise to the Lord for His lovingkindness. Read Romans 11: How do these verses encourage you? 10. Share one thing from this lesson that made your purpose in life more clear.
