2 God Calls Us to Worship 1 Romans 15:8-12 M O R E A B O U T K I N G O F K I N G S, P C A We Pray for God s Presence 2 We Confess our Sins & Receive God s Forgiveness 3 All: Lord Jesus, I sin. Grant that I may never cease grieving because of my sin, that I would never be content with sin, but rather strive against it. Kill my envy, command my tongue, trample down my self-centeredness. Give me grace to be holy, gentle, and pure, to live for you and not for myself. Deliver me from attachments to the wrong things, from false associations, from the predominance of evil passions, from the sweetness of sin as well as from its bitterness. With deep contrition I come to you and trust in you that I might be forgiven. Amen. I John 1:8-9 Our Purpose This church exists to know, worship, and serve Jesus Christ so that among all peoples and in all things he might be honored as the King of Kings. Core Commitments Knowing the King Scripture is the word of the King and bears his authority in forming and reforming the people of God. God is at work, through the gospel, to redeem humanity and the world in order to bring about his kingdom where righteousness, peace, and joy abound. Worshiping the King The greatness of the King evokes whole-hearted worship worship that reverently celebrates the glory of God. God is both present and active in worship through the reading & preaching of the Scriptures, the offering of prayers, the singing of his praise, the mysteries of baptism & the Lord s Supper, and the fellowship of the body to transform people into the image of his Son. 2 1 Some people ask, "Why does the minister wear a robe?" Our answer is that the robe helps communicate some of our Christian convictions. It reminds us that worship, while a celebration, is an encounter with a holy God. It also reminds us that the pastor, while only a man, is God's messenger, set apart by the Lord to minister his holy word. Likewise, in Scripture we see that when God's priests acted in their official capacity they wore special garments (Exodus 28:2; 35:19) just as a judge or policeman does in our own culture. 2 To conclude each prayer our congregation says Amen. Literally this means so be it or truly. In Scripture amen is used to express consent and participation (Deuteronomy 27:26; 1 Corinthians 14:16), and is the customary conclusion to various acts of corporate worship (1 Chronicles 16:36; Psalm 106:48, Nehemiah 8:6; Revelation 7:11-12). 3 For many people corporate responses are new and even strange to our sensibilities. Our church makes use of this liturgical practice for two reasons. First, corporate responses follow the pattern we see in Scripture which is fully congregational. In other words, all of the people are participants, and frequently respond to God together using established expressions (Deuteronomy 27:11-26; Psalm 136; 1 Corinthians 14:16; Revelation 4:8, etc. ). Second, pre-arranged responsive activities supply the church with a language that is theologically rich and aesthetically pleasing. As one theologian says, "[Responsive readings] deepen the shallow pool of our personal resources and set us free from the prison of our own meager capacity No words can guarantee that worshipers offer their heart, mind, soul, and strength to God, but some words do aid us in this process. Serving the King God calls the church to make and mature disciples of the King. God calls Christians to serve the King in every part of life so that we might bring honor, glory, and praise to Jesus Christ. 15

All: The sacraments or ordinances given by God and instituted by Christ, namely baptism and the Lord's Supper, are visible signs and seals that we are bound together as a community of faith by his death and resurrection. By our use of them the Holy Spirit more fully declares and seals the promises of the gospel to us. Minister: What is baptism? All: Baptism is the washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; it signifies and seals our adoption into Christ, our cleansing from sin, and our commitment to belong to the Lord and to his church. We Offer Our Gifts to God We Pray for the Church & the World (Kneeling) 6 Greg Gilliam, Elder 7 12 How does that relate to slavery to sin and righteousness? 4 The New City Catechism is a joint adult and children's catechism. It asks the same questions of both children and adults, and the children's answer is always part of the adult answer. This means that as parents are teaching it to their children they are learning their answer to the question at the same time, albeit an abridged version. In the adult version the children's answer is underlined to differentiate it from the longer adult answer. 5 The New City Catechism ('catechism' is from the Greek katechein which means "to teach orally or to instruct by word of mouth") is a modern catechism which is based on and adapted from ancient sources including Calvin's Geneva Catechism, the Westminster Shorter and Larger Catechisms, and especially the Heidelberg Catechism. It seeks to bring the riches of the great Reformation-era catechisms to a modern audience by summarizing, clarifying, and restating their insights in contemporary English. 6 People often ask, Why kneel? Our answer is that the Bible commends kneeling as a posture for prayer. For instance, Psalm 95:3-6 says, Yahweh is a great God and a great King above all gods... Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord When we kneel we remember that we approach the mighty King of the universe, and seek to present our whole selves to him in worship. 7 According to the record of scripture, in the early church s worship, the minister and elders led, every member participated, and some members contributed through reading and praying publically (1 Timothy 4:11-15; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17,14:26; et al.). In an attempt to follow this pattern our church rotates who leads this prayer between the minister, elders, and members. Should I participate? This is a meal for those who profess Christ as Lord, who have been baptized into his Church, and who seek to live for his glory. If this does not describe you, we invite you to take this time to consider the things you have seen and heard in worship, including God's love for sinners as portrayed in this meal. You may either remain in your seat or come forward and cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you would like to receive prayer instead of the bread and wine. How should I participate? We encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of this meal then, come forward, starting from back to front, through the center aisle, gather with your family to receive and partake of the meal at the distribution stations, and finally return to your seat by the side aisles. Please Note: We use unleavened bread and wine, but gluten free wafers and white grape juice are also available. Parents: If your children are too young to understand the meaning of this meal please instruct them to cross their arms over their chest.
