Fall 2014 Your Prayerful Support Will Help Others 60-Ton Food Challenge YOU Sent Them Back to School Prepared What do you do with 1500 kids and parents all gathered on a Saturday morning in August? Well you pray that it s not too hot and it wasn t. You sing songs praising Jesus with a rock group we did with Caitlin Jane and Dave Booze! You do an outrageous skit demonstrating in loud terms nice. I didn t have money for school material for my kids that guns, drugs, gangs, and all the fears that go with them are no match for the Name of the Lord Jesus who is a strong protective tower. We did and 98 children gave their It was a big help for me. I am raising my grandkids. lives to Jesus and prayed with dozens of volunteers. You put the Gideons in the middle of the crowd and they hand over 1400 colorful New Testaments. You give every school-age child (K-8th) a backpack filled with school supplies. This helps not only the child s self-esteem when going to school, but the family, because those are the items they don t need to spend scarce dollars on. You also give them an opportunity to have a dentist check their teeth to keep them in good health. We did this with much help (see Start the School Year with a Smile from SBM on page 2). Because YOU give and give, events like the Back-to-School Rally bring home to children that Jesus loves them and cares about them: mind, body, and spirit. Because YOU continue to support Sunday Breakfast Mission, we are able to The dental check-up was very helpful. stretch YOUR dollars. Hundreds of volunteers give countless hours packing and distributing thousands of school supplies. Because YOU give and continue to give, Sunday Breakfast Mission is seeing lives changed for eternity! Please continue to give! Are you ready to take the 60-Ton food challenge? What a great time for YOU to get excited and participate in SBM s Great Thanksgiving Box Food Drive. We are looking to collect 60 tons of food and YOU are just the individual to organize a food drive at your church, school or organization. We will provide you the grocery bags with a list of all the items needed to fill them. YOUR filled bag will help a needy family have a tasty, fulfilling Thanksgiving Day meal. In addition, they will receive extra veggies, Continued on page 3 Listen to Rev. Laymon on Sunday 9:15 a.m. WDEL 1150 AM or online at

2 Sunday Breakfast Mission Fall Staying on the Path More often than not we share stories about men and women who had lost their faith and found it again at Sunday Breakfast Mission. Not so with Don Law s story. I always had a great faith but a series of circumstances left me homeless and in poor health. It was then that I found the Mission. Don was married, had a family, worked in retail management but then lost everything. In the end he experienced numbness on his right side and ultimately had to have two toes amputated. When I first got to the mission I was frightened. I had never been homeless before and needed to adjust to life in a homeless shelter. After 90 days I moved into the Discipleship Program and finally graduated on June 15th When asked how he got to the mission, Don explained that sometimes life throws you curves but his faith in God never wavered. God has a plan for my life and it includes my time here at the Mission. As he has spent time at SBM, Don has worked on a variety of projects and most recently he has overseen the work of men in the Learning Lab. He is also taking courses at Liberty University and hopes to become a Christian counselor one day. I believe my life experiences, faith and education will enable me to help others through a counseling ministry. I have learned so much at the Mission and want to share that faith and heart with others. Don spends time with his daughter and grandson each week and has an optimism that reflects his faith. It is a faith that has rarely wavered. I do have contentment regardless of life circumstances and know that God has a plan for me. My job is to remain faithful, trust and take things one day at a time. Over the years it has been exciting to see the men and women of our mission like Don take important steps in rebuilding their lives. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to witness first-hand the power of God working to and through the people we all serve, states Rev. Tom Laymon. In closing Don states I want people to understand that Sunday Breakfast Mission does way more than serve meals. It helps restore hope. Start the School Year with a SMILE from SBM Dentists and hygienists joined together from different groups to provide something critical for every child before starting school a dental screening at our annual Back-to-School Rally. Husband and wife dentists, Drs. Lewis Yu and Grace Liu, together with their staff from All About Smiles, were joined by dentists and hygienists from Christiana Care and the Delaware Hygienist s Association to perform examinations on 134 children. In addition, Westside Health came and gave dental health instructions to the families and handed out toothbrushes. Each of the dental professionals were excited to see the response of the children for the first year. And the parents were so very grateful. Because YOU give to support Sunday Breakfast Mission, we were able to open our doors to care for these children in such a special way. As YOU continue to give, we are going to try to give medical and dental professionals more opportunity through Sunday Breakfast Mission to reach needy children and their parents, as well as homeless adults. As it says in God s Word, Jesus went about healing everyone who came to Him (Matthew 4:23) and because YOU continue to give, the God-created bodies of these precious children are cared for in Jesus name.

In past years YOU have been instrumental in making this event a great success by stuffing boxes with about 50 pounds of food including the turkey, gravy, dressing and all the other trimmings to make Thanksgiving special for those in need. YOUR giving allows a needy family to receive more than food for their body; they also receive nourishment for their soul. Last year more than 1400 food boxes were distributed and we are calling on YOUR generosity once again. We need YOU more than ever collecting, sorting, boxing and distribution is all part of our annual event. Are YOU willing to invest? Contact Rev. Nancy Wheeler at Sunday Breakfast Mission (302) , ext 172 or by ing nwheeler@sundaybreakfastmission.org to find out how to conduct your own food drive in your office, neighborhood or church. Some have already started the 60-Ton Challenge by placing boxes at work. Remember, the 60-Ton Challenge does not stop with collecting food, we need YOU to pray, volunteer to sort food and to pack food boxes. Call us today.

In 1990, Skip Schoenhals had just come to Delaware from Michigan, taking the helm at a savings bank that was teetering on the precipice. It was not as if he needed another task to challenge him, but when long-time President of the Sunday Breakfast Mission, Dr. Gerald Foster, learned of his Christian commitment and approached him to join the Board, he jumped in with both feet. Soon he was taking on leadership and by 2000 he became Chairman of the Board. During the next 14 years, Skip led the Mission s Board through a number of transitions resulting in an even greater emphasis on bringing the Gospel to every homeless, hungry and hurting man, woman, boy and girl in the region. He led the Board in two capital campaigns one to remodel the existing building and another larger one to build and fund a new Women and Family Ministry Center to house and minister to women, women with children, men with children, husbands and wives, families with teenage boys and intact families. In addition, the new center includes a large gymnasium with a performance stage to allow for a wide variety of activities, including the annual Great Thanksgiving Banquet that entertains over 900 folks for a Thanksgiving Dinner. Skip s love for Christ has driven him to do everything with excellence, especially his work Sunday Breakfast Mission Fall Thank You, Skip Skip Schoenhals and Rev. Tom Laymon, President/CEO with the Mission to advance the Kingdom of God. For that reason, the Board of Sunday Breakfast Mission honored him on June 24, 2014, upon his retirement from the Board, with naming the new gymnasium/chapel for the Women and Families the Marvin N. Skip Schoenhals Activity Hall and provided a statuette rendition of the parable of the Good Samaritan to remind him of the appreciation that SBM has for him as he moves to new ventures of ministry. WE NEED YOU TO INVEST PRAYER, TIME, TALENTS, FINANCES!!! Women s Chapel: Several nights per week are open for your church to spend an hour providing chapel service to our resident women. What a wonderful way to invest in the lives of our women and children. Evangelism Training: Time to invest in training or refreshing your evangelism skills to share the gospel with our community as they receive their Great Thanksgiving Food Box. Our Great Thanksgiving Box distribution training is scheduled for November 20, Great Thanksgiving Food Box Distribution: This is a 2 day event. Time to put that training into good use sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with those who come for food. Mentors: Our graduates, both male and female need you to partner with them as mentors. Graduation has catapulted them to new responsibilities and opportunities. Your one-on-one interaction is valuable in helping our graduates continue their growth walk. Thank you for your support Additional Acknowledgements: Delaware State Parks Mid-County Lanes Penn Cinema Regal Cinemas in Brandywine Herr s Factory Wilm. They are still in the middle of plans for more to come. Thanksgiving: SBM needs turkeys for Thanksgiving including skilled turkey carvers and meal preparation volunteers needed for Wednesday evening, 11/26. This is hard work but rewarding! If you can help, go to org and complete a volunteer application. Specify in the Why did you choose SBM section the specific position(s) you can fill and time availability. Christmas Gift Adopt A Resident Adult and/ or Child: Once again YOU can help by collecting new Christmas gifts and toys for our residents and their children. We need YOUR help in donating items for children ages newborn through 17 years of age. Bring your toys to SBM and we will make sure they are a blessing to our children. Christmas Shop: Light up the faces of our community children who might not otherwise receive a gift at Christmas. 7 Sunday Breakfast Mission Fall Visit sundaybreakfastmission.org and Discover All That We Do It has been almost a year since we launched our new website, and the hope is that it looks new every time you visit. I d like to briefly highlight some of the best tidbits the website has to offer. My name is J. Morgner and one of the many hats I wear at the mission is content management on our website. My hope is that you will visit our website at and browse around and discover more about the work we do, and where you can be involved. Here s my top five: The Annual Report for 2013 is available. It is one document that summarizes the great things we do at the Mission, the results of some of those things and the dollars that are needed to make it all happen. Second, is a catalog of the most recent sermons delivered by Rev. Laymon on his Sunday morning radio program Wings of the Morning on WDEL. Third, is the Current Events block at the bottom of the homepage. You can always see what s coming up next as soon as the site loads. Next, is the Radio button on the Donate Now page that lets you make your generous gift to the mission a recurring one. See the monthly giving article in this newsletter for reasons you might want to consider giving monthly. Last, but not least, is the seasonal projects linked under Get Involved. Right now it features Thanksgiving and Christmas. Similar to Current Events, here you can find out how you can be involved in what is happening at Sunday Breakfast Mission. I can be reached at jmorgner@ sundaybreakfastmission.org if there are issues on the website, or if you have other questions. YOU Can Make a Big Difference When you purchase a new car! Don t Trade IN Trade UP to NEW LIFE! DONATE your vehicle to SBM Bring NEW LIFE to hundreds of homeless, hungry and hurting men, women and children! Donate an extra or unused car to SBM for a DEDUCTION! Contact Mike Smith at msmith@sundaybreakfastmission.org or (HOME) x 122.

8 Sunday Breakfast Mission Fall All Eyes on Deck A young naval officer s first task was to safely steer a ship away from the wharf. He carefully went through the procedures; confident he hadn t forgotten a single thing. Just then a call came from the captain, congratulating the officer on his textbook disembarkation. There is just one thing you ve forgotten the Captain added, next time make sure I m on board before you leave! (Illustration by Pastor John Perry) It can be easy to feel like we re in charge, but Jesus said apart from Him we can do nothing. All that we have even our very breath exists because a loving God provides it. So how can we bless him in return? By exercising good stewardship. We can do this in a variety of ways: loving others, using wisdom in financial decisions, giving of our finances and talents, taking good care of our bodies and the environment, and planning for tomorrow. An up-to-date Will or Estate Plan is not only good stewardship, it can provide for your family, reflect your love for the Lord and bless ministries you appreciate, like Sunday Breakfast Mission, for generations to come.
