St Luke s Parish Mission Statement We strive as a church to be a worshipping and caring community, committed to serving God, by taking his love and peace to the world, in the name of his Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Our Prayer seeking a new Parish Priest Gracious God, We thank you for our Parish of St Luke s; for its homes and businesses, busy streets, communities and meeting places, and for all those who live, work, play and worship here. Now we ask you to raise up for us a new Priest to lead us and serve you: one who will come among us, like our patron Luke, as a faithful companion and a healer, able to listen but also to challenge, ready to learn as well as to teach; a friend of yours who will quickly become our friend too. Give us above all someone who will work tirelessly alongside us to proclaim afresh in our time, and place the Good News of your overflowing love for everyone in Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose Name we pray. 6 Who we are Ekibin Parish is in the Deanery of Brisbane South West, within the Archdeaconry of Oxley, in the Southern Region of the Diocese of Brisbane. It is located approx km from the city centre of Brisbane. Traditionally, it was considered bounded by the South-East Freeway, Toohey Forrest Park, Mayfield Road, Beaudesert Road, Ipswich Road and Waldheim Street. However due to church and parish closures in Moorooka and Salisbury, we consider the Parish now includes the suburbs of Tarragindi, Annerley (up to Ipswich Road), Nathan, Salisbury and Moorooka. We are a strong, cohesive parish of approximately 100 committed Christians supporting each other in our worship and ministry to each other and the community. We have an ongoing tradition of supporting mission and outreach activities locally and overseas. There are 2 churches in our Parish: St Luke s Church (Ekibin Road East, Tarragindi), established in 1925, has an active worshiping congregation and community. St Aidan s Church (Eric Crescent, Clifton Hill), established in 1929, currently has no active Anglican congregation. The Church and hall are leased to the Ethiopian Orthodox congregation for their worship and fellowship activities. We have an active congregation in Regis Aged Care, Salisbury. The Parish is debt free and has established and sustained itself through generous giving from Parishioners and various fundraising activities. The campus on Ekibin Road East remains the centre of worship and administration for the Parish. Three worship services are held each week on Sundays - 7:00am, 9:00am and 5:00pm. 9 Insufficient outreach St Aidan s church and hall (maintenance implications), and the sale of the property Ageing facilities Finance - Income has declined mirroring the declining attendance, however this is not a reflection of individual giving or participation in fundraising. 11 Parish Facilities St Luke s Church The Church of St Luke s is located at 193 Ekibin Road East, Ekibin. The beautifully appointed, traditional Anglican Church is brick and is centered on a large allotment of land flanked by 2 other buildings - the original church which is now a building containing two large halls and the original Rectory. The church, which has seating for approximately 120 people, has several magnificent stained-glass windows and is air-conditioned. The building is accessible for disabled persons with a ramp to the main front door. The building was consecrated in 1956 and includes a bell tower, entry foyer, priest vestry and general vestry areas. The pews, pulpit, altar and other timberwork are all silky oak, and the timber floor is carpeted in the sanctuary and prayer desk area. The grounds contain a large bitumen surfaced car park and a tennis court size lawn area ( The Green ). Volunteer parishioners beautifully maintain the gardens and lawns. There is also a Memorial Garden in the centre of the grounds. St Luke s Ekibin Parish Profile 2018 Page 11 of 24

Planned redevelopment of St Luke s Campus In partnership with our Diocese and C&K childcare, it is proposed to develop a child care centre for approx. 105 children on our site. This would be a major development and involve the removal of both the existing St Luke s Hall and Parish Centre. The proposed development includes a child care centre on the ground floor levels of new buildings behind and beside our Church (which, importantly, will remain unchanged and central to our campus). The upper floor of the building behind the church becomes a new multipurpose Parish Hall that can accommodate the theatre, functions, Parish offices, a kitchen etc. We would continue to be able to have community groups rent or use our Parish Hall space for functions or activities. Children s Church could be accommodated in this new area also. A new car parking area (larger than the current paved areas) would be built where the current hall is, and the vehicle entry would be relocated away from the major intersection. The Memorial Garden would require relocation to a position adjoining the church. The Parish Council have voted for the project to proceed, and the Finance and Diocesan Services Committee has provided its initial endorsement as has our Regional Bishop and Archdeacon. The project is rapidly moving towards final approvals from C&K, and then to final design and building approvals. This redevelopment aims to provide a secure income stream for the Parish, as well as servicing the loan for the Parish Hall. The Diocese is funding construction of the child care centre. Construction may commence in Q3 2019, with completion by end of St Luke s Hall The two-storey timber hall was the original church building and has been upgraded and extended over the years. Upstairs is set up as a theatre, where the St Luke s Theatre Society presents plays 3-4 times each year. It is also used by various community groups and the Parish for dinners, morning teas and other events. There is a well-equipped stainless-steel kitchen, which complies with Government health regulations. Downstairs is an enclosed hall area with storage and a simple kitchen. This area is used for morning teas, Children s Church, and other fellowship activities. Both areas of the hall are fully accessible, and an accessible toilet is available to the rear. St Luke s Ekibin Parish Profile 2018 Page 12 of 24

The Hall is regularly rented to a variety of ongoing and casual users and serves as valuable income for the Parish. Parish Centre Originally the Rectory, this building includes the Parish Office, with the remainder of the building leased to Centacare, who utilise it as a Day Respite Care facility. It has a fully equipped kitchen and downstairs laundry and storage area. It is available for use for meetings and fellowship activities in the evenings and on weekends when Centacare do not use it. The current lease arrangement provides significant income for the Parish. The building is fully accessible and includes accessible bathrooms. Parish Office The Parish Office is located in the Parish Centre beside the church. The office is airconditioned and equipped with computers, internet and facilities, photocopier, scanner and the usual equipment expected in a well-equipped Parish Office. 14 The Church of St Aidan s The Church of St Aidan s is located at 15 Eric Crescent, Clifton Hill Q4103. This is a wooden church with a brick front. Behind the church is a Hall, which is a source of revenue for our Parish. The church and hall take up most of the land and the grounds are maintained by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church members who lease the Church and Hall for worship and fellowship activities each week. The Hall is rented out to local community groups, contributing to a certain extent to cost of repairs and maintenance required for these buildings. These buildings are requiring an increasing maintenance load. The Parish Council recently recommended the sale of this property, and it is expected the sale will proceed in the first half of 2019 following completion of the formal closure process. The Rectory The Rectory is a 1970 s style weatherboard home on a brick base, situated at 115 Beverley Hills Street, Moorooka, about 7 minutes drive from St Luke s. Upstairs it has 3 bedrooms (main bedroom has ensuite), an office, large L shaped lounge dining room, galley kitchen, well-appointed bathroom and WC, sunroom and small verandah to the North-east. Downstairs there is a large, carpeted rumpus room with a small bathroom containing shower, WC and hand basin. Laundry and garage (one car accommodation) form part of the downstairs area. The garden has been well maintained. The property is currently leased to residential tenants through a local agent, providing a reliable income to the Parish. The property can be made available for priest s residence given appropriate notice. St Luke s Ekibin Parish Profile 2018 Page 14 of 24

Parish Car The current parish car is a 2016 Holden Captiva. The Parish historically has provided a fully maintained (fuel and mechanical, excluding cleaning) vehicle, which has been replaced at approx. 5 year intervals. St Luke s Ekibin Parish Profile 2018 Page 15 of 24

Parish Organisations and groups Parish Council The Parish is currently served by 2 Wardens and a Parish Council totaling 12 persons. The Council meets monthly and oversees the parish activities and finances in accordance with the Diocesan requirements. Children s Ministry During the 9am Sunday service, Children s Ministry is run for school aged children. The children enter the church at the processional, and following opening prayers, there is a short address and discussion focused on the children and the liturgy of the day. The kids then moved into the Hall for their activities and rejoin the service for communion. Children s ministry is run by a volunteer team of lay assistants (parents and other adults). Kofi Klub The Kofi Klub is a social group for women who meet regularly for fellowship and mutual support over coffee. They also regularly support the parish fundraising events and activities. The group meets in private homes. Theatre Society The Theatre Society is a long standing, very successful, amateur theatre group who produce 3 or 4 plays a year in St Luke s Hall. They contribute significant financial support to the parish and provide outreach to the local community as well as having a following in the wider community. Fellowship Groups A couple of book and bible study groups meet fortnightly for prayer and study, in private homes or in the Parish Centre. Blokes breakfast is a group of about 12 men who meet monthly for a shared breakfast with the Parish Priest in St Luke s Lower Hall. St Luke s Ekibin Parish Profile 2018 Page 16 of 24

A Parish Gathering (Camp) has been held in 2017 and 2018 and is booked for This is a weekend event held near Atkinsons Dam in a site equipped with halls and cabins. Through the warmer months of the year the Walking Group meets approx. monthly and takes a walk through the neighborhood forest or park areas and finishes with coffee and snacks. This is planned as an inclusive weekday event. Parish picnics, all age family events, are held periodically through the warmer months in a local park. Bible Study Groups During Lent and Advent, the Priest leads seasonal study groups that meet weekly in the Church or Parish Centre. These evening and daytime groups involve up to around 12 people. Music Committee The music committee provides guidance and support to the musicians and St Luke s Choir who participate in our worship with uplifting hymns and sacred music in both traditional and modern styles. Fellowship and Fundraising Committee The fundraising committee provides vital substantial financial support through the organisation of events, such as Pancake Dinners, Trivia Nights, Hotpot dinner nights, garage sales, stalls at the local Woolworths, as well as monthly stalls to support Bush Ministry. The committee is well supported by a team of crafters, cooks and other volunteers. Faith & Worship 365 Committee This committee has been recently reformed to support our priest to extend and enrich the faith forming and worship experiences (contemporary, family and traditional) within the everyday lives of our parishioners and local community, by means of a forum for prayerful discussion of ideas and practices. ACTS 1:8 Committee The Acts 1:8 committee coordinates the mission support activities for the Parish. This includes a monthly mission focus for prayer, and celebrations of particular events such as Beautiful Feet Sunday, and Singalong events at Regis Aged Care. St Luke s Ekibin Parish Profile 2018 Page 17 of 24

Pastoral Care Committee This committee coordinates activities such as home communion, visits, and ensures prayer lists are kept up to date. They keep in contact with those asking for prayers and ensure they are followed up. Prayer Circle The Prayer Circle provides immediate and ongoing prayer support for requests received from parishioners for those in any kind of need. The contact person, currently the Rector, sends these requests to a dedicated Prayer Circle list. Mothers Union Until mid-2018, the Parish has had an active Mother s Union group for over 75 years. This group was formally closed due to low numbers and aging members. Historically it provided a fellowship and prayer group, who contributed to the parish and supported family activities in line with the objectives and values of Mothers Union Australia. Some members are continuing their commitment to Mothers Union through membership with other groups or as lone members St Luke s Choir The choir of approx. 12 people practices weekly and sings at 2 services each month during communion. They also sing at parish events, special services (Christmas, Easter, saints days etc.) and the Carol Service before Christmas. The Choir has been singing together regularly for over 15 years and focuses on singing worship songs and anthems to complement the liturgy. At times, they are supported by various instrumentalists from the Parish. St Luke s Ekibin Parish Profile 2018 Page 18 of 24

Parish History In 1925 the Parish of Ekibin was established, and the wooden church-cum-hall was dedicated to St Luke by Archbishop Sharp on 16th February. The Rev Dawson Thomas was appointed as the first Vicar. The bell and tower were blessed on 16th May 1926 by Canon Garland. St Aidan s Church at Clifton Hill was opened in 1929 as a daughter church and dedicated on 27th October by Archbishop Sharp. The building of the two-level hall behind St Aidan s occurred in The foundation stone for the present memorial brick church was laid by Archbishop Halse on 26th February 1956 and it was consecrated on 15th July 1962 by Coadjutor Bishop Hudson. St Luke s Church is a peace memorial church, erected to give gratitude to God for the ending of hostilities and to perpetrate the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice St Barnabas Church in Pope Street Tarragindi was opened in initially as a Sunday School Centre and later as another daughter church. The three churches made up the Parish of Ekibin for 30 years. As part of a consolidation strategy for the Parish, St Barnabas was closed by Archbishop Grinrod on 11th June The present Rectory at Moorooka was purchased in 1989 when the Rectory at the Church site was considered to be too noisy and unsuitable. This residence is currently rented at market rate as the Rector was living in his own home and was paid a residential allowance. The Parish has been blessed over the years with a congregation of many long-term talented and dedicated people whose faithfulness has maintained the life of the Ekibin Parish.
