3 Parish Vision Statement Our Vision for All Saints Anglican Parish is to be a vital, living, visible Christian witness, responsive to the spiritual needs of people in our community. PARISH PRAYER Almighty God, we thank you for your many blessings; We pray that we worship in unity and love as the Body of Christ. Strengthen us to seek out and welcome others and grant us courage and grace to embrace life as your people. We offer our prayers and lives as your saints in this place, in the name of our Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier. Amen. All Saints Chermside Profile November
4 Introduction to All Saints Our Story So Far In 1906, a handful of people gathered for worship on a regular basis in the Chermside public hall in Gympie Rd. At first, clergy from the Nundah Parish officiated at services. Land was purchased in Hamilton Road, Chermside in 1913, and a small wooden church was completed and dedicated in Theological students from St Francis College, and clergy from the Nundah Zillmere Parish met the pastoral needs of the people of the new church community. In 1946 the community came under the care of Rev J. H. Brown-Beresford and became part of Lutwyche Parish. Then in 1951 the Rev L.W. (Chum) Grayson was appointed the first vicar of the Chermside church and first priest in charge to live on-site in a new vicarage. Chermside became a Parish in its own right in At this time adjoining land in Hamilton Road was purchased. A brick nave was added to the wooden Church in In 1977 a large functional brick hall with a kitchen, amenities, and an undercroft was built to replace the old army hut, which served as a hall since the 1950s. It is used for Parish functions and is hired out during the week, which is a source of income for the parish. The wooden floor was recently re-laid with the help of a Grant. To cater for the rapidly growing population of North Brisbane, land was progressively purchased in East and West Chermside, Geebung and Aspley and buildings were erected and established to cater particularly for Sunday School and worship needs. Aspley/Bald Hills became a parochial district in 1966 and Zillmere/Geebung in 1973 when these areas became viable and were able to support their own priests. Chermside Parish became geographically smaller and only comprised All Saints, St Thomas (East Chermside) and St. Lawrence (West Chermside). To consolidate resources, St Lawrence and St Thomas were sold (in 1983 and 1990 respectively) and the proceeds from St Thomas used for capital works, making All Saints a single centre Parish. An off-site rectory was purchased in 1985 and the old Rectory became the Parish Centre, containing various offices and meeting rooms. In 1995 the off-site rectory was sold and a new rectory built on-site. The Parish Centre was moved behind the Church and then work commenced on the extension of the Church. Final development of the site was completed in 1996 and the building was dedicated by Archbishop Hollingworth. The Garden of Remembrance, which had been established in 1978 for the interment of ashes was upgraded at this time. All Saints Chermside Profile November
5 Care has been taken to maintain the property in the best possible way. Over the past few years we have improved our parish environment in many ways. We have endeavoured to increase our visibility in the community which has been an ongoing commitment. An outdoor lit sign has been erected and works have been commissioned to erect a large, floodlit cross at the front of the church. The front garden is to be re-landscaped and new signage erected to the front wall. This work will further enhance the visibility of the church and improve its overall ker appeal. There is a courtyard between the church and the parish hall over which shade sails have been erected, and the courtyard is fully fenced to provide safety to young families with children. The Parish Centre is well maintained and the carparks are paved and in good condition. This parish has been successful in obtaining grants in the past with the relaying of the wooden parish hall floor, a new parish centre pantry room was created and the interview room for emergency relief clients was carpeted. At this time the kitchen was also upgraded and equipped for functions. All these grants were successfully funded by the Gaming Community Benefit Fund. In 2015 the parish celebrated our 100th Anniversary as a worshipping centre in our local community of Chermside. Many events were held to mark this historic occasion and a history book was compiled and launched. There is still much to be done in our community, both parish and local, which will see that the parish continues to minister to the wider community and remain a viable presence in the Chermside area. 6 Our Local Community The Region and Demographics The Parish includes the suburbs of Chermside, West Chermside, Wavell Heights, Stafford Heights and part of Aspley. A large number of Parishioners reside outside the formal parish boundaries, although the majority of those choosing to worship at All Saints reside within relatively close proximity. The broader Parish region is predominately residential, with retail and health services being the predominant industries. However, the suburb of Chermside is one of Brisbane s busiest with a Taxation Department Office, a Centrelink Office and the Westfield Chermside Shopping Centre which is the largest regional shopping centre in Queensland. The Westfield Chermside Shopping Centre contains about 450 specialty stores including Myer, David Jones, a large cinema complex, K Mart, Coles, Big W and Woolworths. There is also an extensive range of restaurants and bars. The centre is adjacent to the Chermside Bus Station. The infrastructure, facilities and public transport have contributed to Chermside being regarded as one of the major urban hubs in Brisbane (and this is reflected in an increasing presence of Government agencies) and some describe the area as a future mini CBD of Brisbane. Chermside is located on the north side of Brisbane, approximately 10 km from the Brisbane CBD. Busy Gympie Road which is lined with shops and offices runs less than half a kilometre from the Church which is located on Hamilton Road. Recent statistics indicate that over 25% of households consist of couples with children, 41% are of couples without children and 26% are single parent households. With significant developments in the region, the number of apartments in the suburb has grown dramatically and the population is set to increase over coming years. The suburb is clearly already undergoing a significant transformation (with stand alone dwellings rapidly disappearing). The features of the suburb of Chermside are not typical of other suburbs in the Parish boundaries and surrounding areas in which a significant number of Parishioners live. In these suburbs stand alone dwellings predominate, although there are a growing number of townhouse developments. The demographics of these, such as a greater proportion of households consisting of couples with children, are somewhat different to Chermside. In terms of socio-economic indicators, Chermside is regarded as a disadvantaged location, while a high proportion of the surrounding suburbs are regarded as relatively affluent. 7 External Environment and Facilities The large Prince Charles Hospital (located in Chermside) has attracted an agglomeration of health and emergency service facilities to the region. Holy Spirit Northside Hospital is co-located with Prince Charles Hospital. Our parish priest is rostered with other parish priests to be on call on the Chaplain s day off (about once every 6 weeks approximately). There are a number of Aged Care facilities in the Parish area including Weller Gardens Settlement, and Tri-Care Nursing Home. In addition to ministry to individual residents of these facilities, the Parish conducts a monthly ministry program at The Burnie Brae Centre which is Brisbane s largest senior citizens centre offering a wide range of social, educational and recreational activities and community services for fitter seniors, frail aged persons and younger people with disabilities. Schools within the Parish boundary include Wavell Primary and High, Somerset Hills Primary, and Craigslea Primary and High. The parish provides RE to the Craigslea Primary School and supports, jointly with other churches in the district, the Chaplain at Craigslea High School. Other facilities in the area include the large, recently re-built Chermside Public Library (one of the few open 7 days per week), Kedron Wavell Services Club (one of the largest service clubs in Queensland), a number of sporting clubs and a public Swimming Pool and Water Park. There are also a number of facilities as a part of the Chermside HUB including a Taxation Office, Centrelink Office, The Brisbane City Council North Regional Business Centre, which houses the local library, the Ward Office, and offers increased capacity of local Council services, other Government agencies, businesses, and branches of financial institutions and health insurance funds. 8 Worship The Parish has a catholic tradition of worship, expressing and drawing on a diversity of personal worship practices. The focal point of worship is Eucharistic. We give a strong emphasis on the Eucharist and observe the Church s liturgical calendar with attention given to celebrations during Lent, Holy Week and Easter, Pentecost, All Saints and Christmas. Our tradition has included a high standard of preaching based on sound theology and the lectionary readings. Our Deacon is afforded the full liturgical role of the Deacon in the Eucharist. On the first Sunday of the month there is an emphasis on family worship with baptisms, wherever possible, occurring on this Sunday, as well as God Play for children. Our parish welcomes children in worship including provision of Church activity bags for the under 5 s, as well as Sunday School for children attending pre-school to year 12, which is held at the same time as the 9.00 am service during the school term. Worship Services - Our Regular Eucharist services are: Sunday 7.00am This is a said Eucharist with hymns. Hymns are from Together in Song, and other sources printed under the Parish music licence. Sunday 9.00am This is a Sung Eucharist with hymns. Hymns are from Together in Song, and other sources printed under the Parish music licence. (In addition, at 9.00am, certain Sundays of the month have a different musical focus incorporating additional music (Introit, Gospel Alleluia, Intercession Responses, Communion anthem, Blessing): 2nd Sunday 3rd Sunday 4th Sunday Instrumentalists play (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet) Cardinale chamber choir, music drawn from classical and contemporary choral repertoire. Parish Choir, music drawn mainly from contemporary repertoire (See Word of Life licence music above.) Saturday 6.00pm Vigil Vigil Eucharist on Saturday evening provides a Parish ministry to shift workers and others whose needs may not otherwise be met by Sunday or weekday services. On the fourth Wednesday of the month the Mothers Union group meet in the parish hall following the Eucharist. Saints Day On designated Saints Days we conduct a said Eucharist in St Thomas Chapel for those who wish to attend. All Saints Chermside Profile November

11 Roles Undertaken by Laity in Worship All Saints Parish recognises the ministry of all baptised Christians. Further, it affirms and encourages lay involvement in worship. The diversity of lay involvement is evidenced by the following examples: Large team of liturgical assistants and altar servers Scripture readers Intercession writers and readers Responsibility for organising certain Parish rosters Shared responsibility for aspects of preparation for worship Housekeep duties e.g. Church cleaning, morning teas etc. The place of the Church in the community: Ecumenical relationships Ecumenical relationships are mutually cordial with an ad hoc Ministers Fraternal. Contact with clergy from other denominations is also made through the Craigslea State High School Chaplaincy Support Committee. At present a lay member is representing the Parish on this committee. The Parish makes a financial contribution towards the support of the Chaplain. Parishioners attend the World Day of Prayer for which All Saints takes its turn as host Parish within the district. Once a year Mothers Union organises an Ecumenical Service followed by a Soup and Sandwiches luncheon. Once a month the parish priest presides over an ecumenical service at Wheller on the Park. All Saints Chermside Profile November
12 Leadership As a vibrant community, the Parishioners have come to appreciate a participatory leadership style, in which individual gifts are discerned, nurtured and their use encouraged. Lay people share many of the leadership tasks of the Parish. Strong emphasis has been placed on the development of lay leadership, gifts are recognised, training is given and ministers are equipped for particular ministries. Lay leadership is demonstrated in: Home Communions Mothers Union Liturgical music group Welcoming program Study group leadership Children s ministry Emergency Relief Ministry groups such as WOMBAT Involvement on diocesan committees and boards Ministry Formation Student support group (as and when required) All parishioners undertaking ministry with children and young people have participated in the safe ministry check and are holders of a blue card. 15 Discipleship In the past the following has been formative in the development of lay Ministry, Education for Ministry, Archbishop s certificate modules, Catechumenate, quiet days at Brookfield, Workshops, Camps and Retreats have all been influential in our development. There is a strong sense of community in the parish. The development and acceptance of the ministry of the laity has been a priority, enhanced by the discernment and affirmation of peoples gifts. In 2009 a faith formation program was implemented for the preparation of Confirmees and those seeking admission into the Anglican faith. The Parish continues to be perceived as a suitable placement for Ministry Formation Students. Discipleship initiatives include: Mothers Union - Mothers Union is well established in the parish. Cursillo - We are actively involved in Cursillo with parishioners attending weekends, with involvement on team and within the Secretariat. Study groups - Small groups/home groups have been established where parishioners enjoy fellowship, study and prayer together. Lenten study groups - Parishioners are encouraged to join a Lenten Study Group. Sunday school/god Play - Sunday school meets during the 9.00am Sunday service. 17 Parish Administration Management The day-to-day management of the Parish is conducted by the Parish Priest and Wardens. Parish Council meets monthly, plans priorities, directions and authorises expenditures with regard to the parish budget. An Executive Team comprising, wardens, treasurer and parish priest, the executive team also meet monthly to expedite decisions and to ensure the day-to-day running of the parish. The Parish has a paid part-time Parish Administrator who works in the parish centre for five hours each day on Tuesday to Friday. The parish office is open from 9.00am to 12 noon Tuesday to Friday. The parish administrator is responsible for administration assistance, publication of pew bulletins, liturgies and general office management. The paid pastoral musician is well supported by liturgical music groups, instrumentalists and choir. Parishioners are kept informed through the weekly pew bulletin and a Parish magazine, Saints Alive, which is published three times a year. The Parish roll and directory is continually updated. A Parish list, telephone tree, is utilised and a Parish web site is maintained and is in the process of being re built. Staffing Parish Priest Associate Priest (non-stipendiary) Deacon (non-stipendiary) Parish Administrator (paid, part-time) Stewardship and Financial Financial contributions are made using an envelope system. Parishioners are also encouraged to use ANFIN Direct Giving. Giving also occurs via loose cash in the collection plate. A stewardship program is conducted on an annual basis. An amount for general fundraising is included in the budget; the rental of parish buildings has increased in recent times. An amount of fundraising still continues to be necessary to support the parish budget. Examples include fundraising by the choir for music, and fundraising by the parish includes social nights and a Christmas Market. Concerts are also organised by the parish through the pastoral musician and the choir. All Saints Chermside Profile November
18 Parish Strategic Planning Over the last five years, the Parish has put considerable effort into undertaking strategic planning initiatives. This included workshops, Natural Church Development Surveys and a Parishioners Survey. While the measurable objectives have not all been met and some desired outcomes are still being pursued, they do provide valuable material to understand the nature of the Parish, what Parishioners most like about All Saints, what aspects are considered to require improvement, and issues and ideas for the future. A Parishioners Survey, undertaken in November 2006, is particularly valuable in this regard. Parishioner Demographics The Survey indicated that: Over 65% of Parishioners are older than 60 years of age; Over 50% of respondents have been attending All Saints for more than 10 years (and over 70% for six or more years); The congregation is predominately female, almost 65%; Parishioners predominately reside in the nearby suburbs of Chermside, Chermside West, Kedron, Wavell Heights, Aspley, Carseldine, and Bridgeman Downs. Parish Strengths and Weaknesses The Survey indicated that the following opinion statements had the strongest response: People at all Saints make newcomers feel welcome; Parish leaders are enthusiastic; Parish Council is effective; Opportunities for fellowship after church services; The music is uplifting and inspiring. The survey did indicate desires to enhance the following: Different liturgies for different groups; More effort to utilize people s gifts and talents; Involvement with the local community. The Survey results and the planning workshops clearly identified the paucity of youth in the Parish. The 15 to 30 years cohort is underrepresented, as are the younger age groups. One obvious implication is that the Parish does not have the potential to replace its ageing population. The Plan identified the need to introduce and develop a dedicated Ministry as a catalyst to attract children, youth, the under 40 s and their families into active participation in the life of the Parish. New service offerings responsive to the needs of this age group were suggested. Efforts in this regard have not been successful to date. All Saints Chermside Profile November
19 Where to Now We are challenged as a Parish to Attract and retain the membership of youth and young families; Offer ministry to the wider community; Meet the needs of an ageing congregation, particularly in respect of transport; Consider alternative forms of worship, which complement and facilitate outreach and evangelism; Discern our ministry, individually and as a parish; Attract new Parishioners, in particular young families, couples and singles moving into the community; and Continue to develop pastoral care programs, youth strategies and services for the elderly and shut-ins. To move us forward, we believe we need a Parish Priest who Is a person of prayer; Is strong on pastoral care; Is a teacher; Possesses good management, counselling, communication and interpersonal skills; Provides stimulating theological leadership and supports and encourages an educated laity to continue to be involved in the spiritual life of the Parish and that of the wider community; Challenges the congregation with high-quality, engaging sermons; Is sensitive to the needs of all members of our faith community; Discerns and affirms people s gifts and encourages innovation; Can maintain high standards in the performance and style of liturgy which is consistent with the Anglican tradition, including the use of a variety of musical styles, and can meet the need for both traditional and more innovative service formats; Supports our established policy in relation to Children in Worship; Practises a collaborative leadership style; Works with our vision for church growth, evangelism. and the future plans of the parish; Displays sensitivity and good humour, and is able to provide guidance and support for a strong lay involvement; Is willing to retain and work with existing staff.
