3 LIVING GOD LUTHERAN CHURCH A picture is worth a thousand words. We re all very familiar with this secular proverb. Wikipedia says the modern use of the phrase stems from an article in the advertising trade journal Printers' Ink, promoting the use of images in advertisements that appeared on the sides of streetcars. The December 8, 1921 issue carries an ad entitled, "One Look is Worth A Thousand Words." But, today I wonder if this cliché isn t a huge understatement. Since 1921 our world has seen advances in technology that have more than shaped our culture, they have shaped the way we think and process information. The TV and the computer have brought us into an age where a steady flow of images communicate much more than a thousand words, they convey entire thoughts, experiences, and even feelings. Consider the following image, for example. You re stopped at a red light, and in front of you is a well used, moderately scratched and dinged pickup truck. A man of relatively small stature wearing a ball cap is in the driver s seat and flicks a cigarette butt out the window. On one side of the tailgate is one of those magnetic yellow ribbons. On the other is a sticker that displays a picture of the crashing Twin Towers in NYC, the caption reads Never Forget. This image does so much more than communicate information. This image conveys various things that evoke in all of us a story on its own, one that is different for all of us. And, this experience is not unique to this image. We are no longer people who merely read words, we are now people who experience stories in and through what we read. Images are metaphors for real life. Metaphors don t just help to explain the details any more. Metaphors now are capable of carrying the truth itself. Today, I wonder if it wouldn t be more accurate to say that a picture is worth a bazillion, quadrillion, million words. The gospel according to John opens with a statement that people of today s image-rich culture can relate to, possibly better than ever before. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. John 1:14 What once was the word of God s promise for life and hope; now lived, moved and breathed among us. The word became a real experience embedded within human history. Today, he is kept alive among us by the re-telling and the remembering of the story of his saving action on our behalf. This story is made real, and given flesh and bone in today s culture by the use of images; pictures that tell the story in and for our contemporary world. It s no wonder, then, that churches everywhere have installed projectors and sound systems into their worship space. Thanks to a generous gift, we have installed this tool in our worship space. It will take some time and some trial and error for us to adjust to using it as an enhancement to worship. It will also take the addition of a specific ministry team who are devoted to using this equipment on a weekly basis if we wish to make the most of it. But, it will help us to convey the gospel more effectively by helping us to put contemporary flesh on the Word which is among us. It was in the Renaissance period when congregations recognized the necessity to begin installing organs into their churches. Music became an acceptable vehicle, arguably for the first time in the common era, for conveying the gospel and giving glory to God in worship. Churches began investing in pipe organs, musicians and choirmasters. Most assuredly there were many who scoffed at the use of the organ during this time of change. But, obviously tradition has panned out in favor of the organ. We are now in a new era of worship, one in which churches are recognizing the necessity to invest in audio and video systems as well as in the people who are trained to use them. We are in a time when the choirs practice time is just as important as the A/V team s use of practice time to provide a flow of images that enhance the music and the message of the worship service. Who among us knows for sure what this generation will give to the next, or whether or not a hundred years from now churches will still be investing in pipe organs, or if today s A/V systems are here to stay. One thing is for certain, our worship gives glory to God when the Word becomes flesh and dwells among us. So, as we learn how to best make use of the gift of new technology and as we continue to search for music leadership let us move forward gently but not timidly keeping John 1:14 as our goal. Blessings, +Pastor Rich PS. Please keep our music director search team in your prayers. 3
4 LGLC IS LOOKING FOR CRAFTY PEOPLE If you, or a friend, would like to book a table to sell crafts at the Christmas Bazaar, please contact Lin Williams. This will be our 5 th annual Christmas Craft Bazaar and the attendance gets higher every year. We will have beautiful hand made cards; knitted or crocheted items, jewelry, wooden Christmas items, as well as other items for shoppers to choose from. Please spread the word that table space for rent by craft makers is limited and will be on a first come basis. The LGLC ladies will be making home made soup and there will be hot dogs, hamburgers, and snacks available to eat in or take home. We will be requesting home made baked items to sell. Money collected from the renting of tables, baked table sales, and money raised by a raffle will be used for our church s general fund. Please plan now to attend this fun event; enjoy the Christmas music and support this way of raising money for the benefit of all. Lin Williams, (before 9 pm, please) Lin Williams, Worship Committee Team Leader GREENWOOD SINGERS TO RETURN! We are pleased to announce that the popular singing group, The Greenwood Singers, will be returning to LGLC on Saturday, November 29 th. This concert was a well attended and well received concert last year and we were able to book a date again for this Christmas season. Please reserve the date and come enjoy an evening of excellent singing.

The attendance for the service was 101 and we served 104 spaghetti dinners. The Produce Junction store in Exton donated all of the produce for the salads and spaghetti sauce, and the Giant grocery stores in Exton and Thorndale each gave a $25 gift card. At the end of the First Anniversary service the Outreach Team presented Pastor Rich with a shirt bearing the logo of Sweet Water Sabbath on it. Pastor Rich asked everyone in attendance to sign the shirt before leaving to go home. The Outreach Team would like to thank everyone for their help and support in organizing this very special celebration. Best wishes for 2009!
6 FALL & WINTER OUTREACH PROJECTS This year is quickly passing by. With summer coming to an end and the school year beginning, we will soon find ourselves in the middle of collecting items for the holiday season. Take advantage of those back to school sales as many of those items would be great in a shoebox for underprivileged children. Operation Christmas Child (which some refer to as the Shoebox ministry) will be coordinated by Dana Kegerreis again this year. You may participate by filling your own shoebox or donate $25 to have items purchased by a Outreach Team member (this would include the $7 shipping charge). All Donations will be needed by Oct 15. Anyone interested in assisting with this rewarding project please contact Dana Kegerreis at We will also be collecting school supplies for the 2008 Synod Sponsored Ingathering Project which takes place in November. This program benefits children being resettled in our area as well as children whose lives have been disrupted by war or some other disaster. Pam Latham is the coordinator for the project. All Donations will be collected on Sunday, November 16 & 23 during all worship services. Anyone interested in assisting with the project please contact Pam at Items we will be collecting are: Monetary donations toward the purchase of 50 Tote bags. ($125) Boxes of crayons Pads of construction paper Rulers in centimeters and inches Spiral notebooks Safety scissors 2 ½ Eraser Packets of Pencils with erasers Pencil sharpener Ruled paper in pack Join us on November 25th, 6:00pm at LGLC if you would like to help with the assembly of these 50 tote bags for shipping.
