Greetings to Our Saviour s family and friends, September is here and we are starting many new opportunities for worship, education, fellowship and service. We hope you will find areas in which you wish to participate or if you have a creative new idea that you will share it with us and together we may grow it into a ministry. We will continue to offer conversational and educational opportunities between worship services. This month on September 20th and 27th between worship services we will join together in our sanctuary to talk about same-gender marriages which are legal. Therefore, people may be coming here asking to be married. We would like our conversations to be productive discussions in a spirit of mutual respect As members of a community formed by Baptism and sustained by the Eucharist, we will enter these conversations as equals. We will be contributing our different experiences, sensitivities, joys, sorrows, skills, and abilities. These diverse gifts can enrich conversations, but they can also cause tension, especially when the subject matter is controversial. Conversations about whether Our Saviour s will be, or won t be, officiating same-gender marriages, may raise controversial and deeply personal issues. For the members of this church to engage these issues productively we will need to trust each other. One effective way to build trust is to listen respectfully to one another. We will be following the guidelines which are listed below as examples of behaviors that can help ensure that all members of the body of Christ are listened to and all are heard. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you even when they disagree with you. Be sensitive to the fact that comments received as simply information by some will be received by others as far more personal, perhaps even threatening or hurtful. Listen as much or more than you talk. Genuine listening is not a passive activity, but an active, demanding one. Listen not only for the content of what is said, but also for the way it is said. Observe carefully the emotion, body language, and other clues about how people are feeling. When what someone says makes you uncomfortable, try not to be in a hurry to move on in the conversation. Give the other a full hearing and full consideration. State your own thoughts and feelings honestly. Even passionate conversation can be civil and constructive. Let people speak for themselves and do not presume to speak for others or know what others believe or think. Therefore, use I statements and avoid You statements. Keep an open mind and heart. Try to understand others as much as possible and be attuned to what you might learn. Try to put yourself in another s place. Look for shared values even though there are serious disagreements. Appreciate each other s faith and faithfulness. Realize that the Holy Spirit is present and active among all in the conversation. Each participant has a part of the truth you are seeking to discern. We are looking forward to growing together through conversation as we love God and love others. God s peace, Pastor Dee Sim Portions of this are taken from: Talking Together as Christians about Tough Social Issues, ELCA Division for Church in Society,

3 Y O U T H & Y O U N G A D U L T M I N I S T R Y 3 Goodbye to our Summer Intern, Sara: As summer comes to a close, it is time for me to say farewell and head back to UW-Milwaukee. Serving as the CSI this year has been a wonderful experience. I would like to thank all of the OSLC staff and members for being so warm and welcoming. Many times this summer I referred to myself as just the intern, but looking back being the CSI was so much more than just an internship. I have had the privilege to watch the youth grow and foster relationships with each other and with God this summer, from Toronto to VBS, which was such a joy and honor in itself. Being apart of the OSLC staff gave me great insight into all of the background work that goes into making OSLC such a wonderful place to serve and worship. I got to attend meetings, go on visits with the pastors, help and attend all of the youth events, and help with projects around the church (like the youth game room renovation!). I d like to thank Brian, Laura, Amy, Pastor Dee, Pastor Kurt, and Craig for being such great mentors, helping me, and answering any/all of my questions. I am so glad to have had this opportunity to grow in my own faith, and start my own roots here at OSLC. This summer has been full of laughs, fun, and faith; I can t wait to come back over winter break! Until then, Sara Kay Gengler 7th Grade Retreat 4:00 Friday, Sept. 18 to 11:00 Saturday, Sept. National Geographic Special Issue Jesus and the Apostles-Christianity s Early Rise In 2014, National Geographic published a special issue about Jesus and his disciples. A member has donated her copy to us. I read it cover to cover which wasn t difficult to do. There is very little text on the 128 pages. Most of the space is filled with beautiful photographs of paintings, mosaics, fragments of Biblical text, photographs of the Holy Land, symbols, timelines, and a map. In a way it tells the story of Jesus and the early church through gorgeous masterful art. Take a look. You do not need to check it out, just read and then return. It is definitely worth your time! Do you play an instrument or sing? Help fill the church with special music. Contact Katy Sunstrom or the church office; we need your talents! Sign up sheet located in Fellowship Hall. BOOK STUDY Beginning on Sept 22, plan to attend the group studying the book Everybody s Normal Till You Get To Know Them by John Ortberg. This is the same book that was discussed on Monday afternoons last year and many of you said you wish you could have been a part of the study. Therefore, I am offering this opportunity for a Tuesday Evening Study (meeting the first & third Tuesday of the month). Books are available for purchase in the church office. $4 each. Pastor Dee GOD DOESN T CHANGE Equip! will resume in October. Please watch for more information... It turns out that there are some things that don t change. That s what Eugene Peterson says in his introduction to the book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. WE may change. Our world may change. But God does not. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. God is our ROCK on whom we depend, and God not only points us in the right direction, but God also walks with us on the journey. This fall our women s study group will read Peterson s book and focus on fifteen psalms to discover what they teach us about God---and about ourselves. In our conversations around the table we will share our own challenges and insights and consider how God calls us to live in today s world. Meetings will begin on Monday, September 14 at 1:30, and the book costs $9. It is available in the church office. If you have questions, you can reach Pastor Roberta Thomson at or grandmabert7@gmail.com. Give thanks to the LORD, for his faithful love endures forever. Psalm 136
