Disciples of Jesus Our Saviour s Lutheran Church, I recently came across the following paragraph about the month of August: August was named in honor of Augustus Caesar. It has 31 days because Augustus wanted as many days as Julius Caesar's month of July had*. *They took that extra day from February. I had known it was named after Augustus Caesar, but I didn t know the back story of Julius Caesar. It seems that even that long ago, people were envious of one another. Now it s probably not going to happen anytime soon that the calendar is going to be renamed after you or me, but we all too, have envy of others that prompts us to separate ourselves and/or think less of others to make ourselves feel better. Starting in September, Our Saviour s is going to embark on a Worship and Sunday School adventure called the Narrative Lectionary that over the course of two years will lead us from the Book of Genesis through the Book of Revelation. We ll hear and read about our faith forebears who, like us, are beloved of God in spite of themselves. We ll come to see that ALL are created in the image of God, that Jesus died & was raised from death to redeem ALL people, and that God s Holy Spirit brings faith from nothing or fans dimly burning wicks of faith, long given up on as being snuffed out. Please plug into worship. Plug your child(ren) into Sunday School. Find an avenue to serve. Just a reminder: In September Pastor Dee and I will be hosting conversations on Sunday mornings between worship services in regards to Our Saviour s Lutheran and whether or not we as pastors will be officiating at Same Gender weddings, now legal in the United States. There will NOT be any votes on this. The Bible will NOT be used to beat people over the head with if there are differences of interpretation. These WILL be respectful conversations. EVERY opinion will be invited to be voiced. In the end a consensus will be reached as to how OSLC will move forward with weddings. Please be in prayer about this. In our conversations around the table we will share our own challenges and insights and consider how God calls us to live in today s world.

That s what Eugene Peterson says in his introduction to the book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. WE may change. Our world may change. But God does not. This fall our women s study group will read Peterson s book and focus on fifteen psalms to discover what they teach us about God---and about ourselves. In our conversations around the table we will share our own challenges and insights and consider how God calls us to live in today s world. Meetings will begin on Monday, September 14 at 1:30, and the book costs $9. It is available in the church office. It is going to be a fun season! Fox Valley Lutheran Homes Upcoming Offerings August 2015 News It s hard to believe that summer is going so quickly! Our good news is that we are close to being full, with a waiting list for our two bedroom apartments. We have been trying lots of new things to help make people more aware of Fox Valley Lutheran Homes, and they seem to be working. When they compare us with other places, they come back here! Mark your calendars now for the October 4 th Pie and Ice Cream Fund Raiser and Silent Auction. If you have a craft group at church, how about donating one of your projects for our Silent Auction, i.e. a quilt, a set of greeting cards, some wood projects, a beading project, etc. All money raised goes to help Fox Synod Golf Outing Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Glacier Wood Golf Club in Iola. This Golf Outing is open to all Pastors, AIMs & Diaconal Ministers of the East Central Synod of Wisconsin. We also welcome any congregational members, council members or others interested in a day of golf, fun, and a great day to be together. 13 A W O R D F R O M T H E B I S H O P 11 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:7). Grace and peace to you in the name of the crucified and risen Christ. Last week the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its decision announcing the right of same-gender couples to have equal access to marriage. For many members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, this decision is a welcome sign of hope and a time for celebration. Other members of this church do not agree with the court s decision and remain deeply concerned because of their understanding of Scripture. This decision affects each of us, some profoundly, and we are not of one mind. Let us continue to accompany one another with prayer, love and mutual respect as we reflect on this new reality and remember Paul s words in 1 Corinthians about the enduring power of God s love. The ELCA social statement Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust (2009) neither endorses nor forbids same-gender marriages and recognizes that we have differing understandings and convictions on this matter. In its decision, the court stated that the First Amendment ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths. According to this church s social statement on human sexuality, all decisions about recognizing, supporting and holding publicly accountable same-gender relationships are entrusted to congregations. Recognizing that the church is not of one mind on this subject, our 2009 actions provide that congregations and clergy should discern together whether to recognize such relationships and to what degree. Pastors are to engage in conversation, discernment and partnership with the congregations who have called them prior to solemnizing or presiding over a same-gender marriage. On the other hand, no pastor is obligated to solemnize the marriage of any couple, same-gender or different-gender, whom the pastor cannot in good conscience marry. As Lutheran Christians, we continue to be a church that engages in conversation and discernment in all aspects of our faith and life. Creating space for respectful conversation and dialogue continues to be an important part of our life together. A helpful resource for engaging in difficult conversations is Talking Together as Christians about Tough Social Issues. In addition, the ELCA Ministry to and with Same-Gender Couples and their Families Working Group remains in the process of completing its work. A report of the group s findings and possible recommendations will be presented to the ELCA Church Council at its November meeting. We seek to see our differences as a gift to be celebrated as we live out that which unites us: the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ who leads us into mission and ministry in the world. In the midst of this change, we are first and foremost church a church that proclaims the good news of Jesus Christ. He will register you and you will be contacted to take a survey of your marriage online. You and your spouse will take it separately from one another. The cost is $35.00 which you will pay online. The results for each couple will be given to you at the S.A.L.T. series each Wednesday as we go over the featured relationship aspect. They are private to you and will not be shared with anyone else.
