2 Reflection: Which Way? By Jeff Norberg Standing on the crossroads deciding which way to go toward. To the left is my way and to the right is to the Lord. My way means humans who are just as imperfect as me. The Lord's way means perfection will walk beside me and be a friend in need. My way is like a boat that doesn't have an oar. The Lord's way is like an eagle that was made to soar. It is true that with my way a false sense of freedom could seem strong. Whereas the Lord's way might take work and the road may seem long. Eventually though the illusion of freedom would end and I would be destitute and all alone. But the Lord's way means I would have a friend to take my hand and lead me home. I notice that even with all my possessions my life would always get unfurled. So I reached for the treasures of Heaven and not those of the world. I know I made the right choice as I turned right onto the road. For it was at that instant I felt the Lord take my hand and release my load. 5 FIRST READING: Jonah The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2 Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. 3 So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days walk across. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day s walk. And he cried out, Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. 6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. 8 Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. 9 Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish. 10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. 7 Prayer for new Rector Bountiful God, give to this parish a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Give to those who will choose, wisdom, discernment and patience, and to us give warm and generous hearts, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen. APBA p.212 Prayer of thanks for the appointment of a new Archbishop Loving God, we thank you for calling Kay Goldsworthy to be the next Archbishop of Perth. Guide her as she completes her ministry in Gippsland. Give grace to Bishop Kate and Bishop Jeremy as they continue to lead us through this time of change. Encourage each one of us to do all we can for you, and for the world you love, in prayer and worship, in teaching and care, in giving and serving, in our parishes, schools and agencies, and in the communities where we live and work. Prepare us to enter this new ministry partnership trusting in your grace, which is sufficient for us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 7

8 PARISH INFORMATION Notices in inverted commas are copied from other publications. World Day of Prayer The World Day of Prayer service will be held at 10.00am on Friday 2 March at St. Christopher s. See notice on board in foyer. Rectory The tenants from the rectory are leaving at the end of January. Best wishes for the future to Natalie, Richard and family. As is the usual case after tenants leave, it is likely that some maintenance work will need to be completed before new tenants (or possible future rector) can lease the property. If you are available to help with a working party, please let Fran or Catriona know. We hope to re-lease the property as soon as possible and therefore we will want to get the work done quickly. INSTALLATION OF THE EIGHTH ARCHBISHOP OF PERTH Saturday 10 February 2018 at am at St George's Cathedral, Perth. Everyone is welcome to attend the Installation of The Right Reverend Kay Goldsworthy AO as the Eighth Archbishop of Perth and Metropolitan of the Province of Western Australia. Please note there will be very limited seating available in the cathedral. However there will be seating in Burt Hall where the service will be broadcast on a large screen. Ordination Invitation Brett Gibson and Jeff Astfalck are to be ordained at St George s Cathedral on Wednesday 24 th January 2018 at 7 pm. Anna Gibson has sent an invitation to the people of St Christopher s to attend the Ordination ceremony. Note from Jeff Astfalck - Following the Ordination on Wednesday the 24th there is a catch-up that all are welcome to attend. As I have friends coming from both North and South, 8

9 after the Ordination we are catching up at Lalla Rookha, a bar at 77 At George's Tce where there is a section put aside. All are welcome. 11 Prayer Points Give thanks for rain, which has watered dry country area. Give thanks for the ministry of Reverend Alan Forsyth who is with us today. Pray for a restful break for Reverend John and for Anne as they spend a week with friends. Pray for all who work for justice in the world. Pray for courage to follow the Lord s path as we journey through life. Pray for the ability to recognise unity in diversity as we interact with others. Pray for all who work in the emergency services- especially ambulance drivers and fire-fighters. Pray that students, teachers and school personnel will have a safe return to school, refreshed and ready for a new school year. Pray for Bishops Kate and Jeremy and diocesan leadership team, preparing for the installation of Archbishop Kay Goldsworthy. Pray for Brett Gibson and Jeff Astfalk who will be ordained to the diaconate. May their ministry be guided by God s loving example.
