1 JONAH 3:1-10 TRUE OR FALSE MAY 21, Jonah obeyed the Lord the first time God directed him to go to Nineveh. 2. The city of Nineveh was a very large city with many people. 3. Jonah began to call out God s warnings when he entered the city. 4. God gave the people of Nineveh a year in which to repent of their sin. 5. Wearing sackcloth and sitting in ashes was a sign of pride. 6. Everyone in Nineveh repented, from the greatest person to the least. 7. God spared the Ninevites because He saw that they had genuinely repented of their sin. 8. God spoke to Jonah a second time and told him to go to Nineveh. 9. God gives men a second chance in His service, as He did with Jonah. 10. It took three days just to reach the people in and around the city of Nineveh. 11. God was going to give the people of Nineveh forty days to repent of their wickedness. 12. As Jonah went into the city on the first day of his arrival, he immediately began to proclaim the message given from God. 13. Soon after Jonah started preaching the people were fasting and wearing sackcloth at every level of society, including the king. 14. Genuine repentance always results in a change life, which is the most important evidence of salvation. 15. A saved person cannot continue to live as he did prior to his salvation because the Holy Spirit will convict him of sin and enable him to live for God. 16. While Jonah waited in anger, the King of Nineveh waited in repentance. 17. God, who is merciful and gives second chances, sent His Word again unto Jonah. 18. God told Jonah the second time to go and preach. 1
2 19. God calls us to help build His Kingdom, and he chooses who will be a part of His Kingdom. 20. This time Jonah is informed that he is to speak only what God tells him. 21. Jonah finally obeyed God and took God s message of salvation to his enemies. 22. Jonah has learned that obedience to God is better than disobedience. 23. Jonah told the Ninevites that in 30 days, they would be overthrown. 24. The people of Nineveh took God at His word. 25. The people of Nineveh put on sackcloth which is worn in mourning or humiliation. 26. The king laid aside his royal robe and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. 27. The king took the initiative and spelled out to the people what they all needed to do to rectify their problem. 28. God told Jonah to preach His word in Tarshish. 29. Jonah traveled many miles to get to Nineveh. 30. Jonah preached, In forty days Nineveh will be overthrown. 31. The people of Nineveh held a great feast to celebrate Jonah s words. 32. The king put on his royal robe and sat on his throne. 33. The king told the people they could not eat or drink. 34. The king told the people to pray to God for forgiveness. 35. The people of Nineveh prayed that God would have mercy and would not destroy the city. 36. God saw that the people repented of their sins. 37. God did not destroy the city of Nineveh. 38. God said, let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water. 2
