At the heart of Jesus public ministry was his training of a small group of disciples. He spent Jme with them, helping them to see the importance of not only knowing who he was, but of doing what he did, and increasingly being like him in holiness of character. It is this example of training that we try to model at Tilsley we want to equip God s people in comprehension, competence and character in order to con- Jnue God s work in God s world. Tilsley has been training people for service for over 40 years, and graduates from the college are part of God s mission in many parts of the world. Some return to a previous career, some go on to further educajon, and others enter full-jme church or mission work, but each one pays tribute to the value of taking Jme out in the company of the Lord Jesus to study and to pracjse the work He has sent every disciple to do. As part of the ministry of Gospel Literature Outreach, Tilsley College has a relajonship with eight similar colleges throughout the world giving it a truly internajonal perspecjve. We are a small college with an average annual intake of students. This creates an injmate atmosphere which is an ideal environment for discipleship-style training. We are also an internajonal college with students who come from across Europe; we also regularly have one or two from further afield. So let me welcome you to Tilsley. 4 WHY TRAIN AT TILSLEY COLLEGE? We believe that Tilsley College has a unique contribujon to make in the spectrum of theological educajon in the UK. Our Cer/ficate, Diploma and European Baccalaureate in Biblical Studies and Chris/an Ministry offer a breadth of knowledge and hands-on experience which makes them an excellent preparajon for further theological training or as a valuable bridge into full Jme ChrisJan ministry. We concentrate on maintaining a careful balance between three key aspects of effecjve training: comprehension, character and competence. Put another way we are commized to: Knowing Most applicants to Bible colleges are keen to improve their Bible knowledge. We share that goal because we believe that if ChrisJans are to minister effecjvely in God s world they need to have a good knowledge of the Bible, theology and how to handle the challenges that they will face in the contemporary world. Being It may be that fewer applicants place an emphasis on character development when signing up to Bible college. At Tilsley College we believe that this is at the core of effecjve ministry integrity of character being like Jesus. Spiritual maturity is something to be taught and modelled, to be trained in, and to be mastered. Part of our training provides for intenjonal discipling which by the power of God s Spirit will lead to spiritual growth and the formajon of Christ-like character. Doing Classroom learning can ocen leave Bible college students as poor pracjjoners. We are convinced that training is not merely an academic pursuit but that theory must be combined with pracjce in order to develop skill in ChrisJan ministry. Tilsley College will offer you a muljtude of opportunijes to parjcipate in actual ministry situajons which range from cross-cultural mission to local church ministry, and from gospel preaching to social acjon. The College is accredited by the BriJsh AccreditaJon Council and the CerJficate and Diploma are accredited by the European Evangelical AccreditaJon AssociaJon; accreditajon for the European Baccalaureate is in process. 2

Students will not only gain an understanding of the principles of ChrisJan ministry but will acquire experience in a range of ministries by working under the guidance of experienced pracjjoners.

Students will have many opportunijes to listen to God, discover spiritual gic, work with others, and grow spiritually. In the case of the full-jme programmes, this spiritual growth is enhanced through the residenjal college experience. PracAcal Skills The programmes provide training in the pracjcal skills required for a wide range of ChrisJan ministries. Students will not only gain an understanding of the principles of ChrisJan ministry but will acquire experience in a range of ministries by working under the guidance of experienced pracjjoners. Support and Accountability The programmes will encourage growth in knowledge, character and skills by linking each student with a member of staff for the purpose of support and accountability. We believe the spiritual aims of the course can best be delivered by students and staff meejng together in class, at leisure and in ChrisJan service. The residenjal experience and closeness of staff provide valuable opportunijes for developing interpersonal skills. Local Church The programmes emphasise the local church as the basis for ChrisJan ministry, and seek to encourage every member ministry and the pracjce of plural leadership. We believe that the best results can be achieved when College and church work together for the benefit of the student. Students will be allocated to a local church for the durajon of their studies so that they will be able to see, reflect on, and pracjse many of the issues which are dealt with in the learning programme. 3

OpportuniJes will therefore be given to hear from and interact with serving missionaries. Students will be involved in evangelisjc projects at home and, as opportunity permits, overseas. Spiritual Life The programmes will encourage an ever-increasing depth of commitment to Christ and the living out of this commitment in all areas of the students lives. Staff seek to be models of ChrisJan discipleship, showing the reality of their faith in ways which students can emulate. Ministry and Cross-Cultural Emphasis All of Tilsley s programmes have an emphasis on vocajonal training for ChrisJan ministry, with prominence given to cross-cultural mission. The high proporjon of Jme spent in ministry placements shows the importance Tilsley azaches to vocajonal training, and is a vital element of the training the College provides and helps in not only giving hands-on experience of ChrisJan service, but also in enabling students to link the knowledge gained in the lecture room with real life ChrisJan work. The ministry placements are arranged through the College and in discussion with students to try to provide opportunijes which meet the individual student s needs. As part of the ministry experience, all students spend 10 days on Team Evangelism, working with a church in the UK in their outreach and other acjvijes. The CerJficate students also spend 10 days in a cross-cultural environment working with a GLO church-planjng team. Usually this is in Naples in Italy, experiencing some of the joys and demands of cross-cultural ministry. 4

7 TILSLEY PROGRAMMES Tilsley College offers three, full-jme, residenjal programmes: a one year Cer/ficate of Higher Educa/on in Biblical Studies and Chris/an Ministry a two-year Diploma of Higher Educa/on in Biblical Studies and Chris/an Ministry a three-year European Baccalaureate in Biblical Studies and Chris/an Ministry Each of these Programmes is a complete programme in itself. Students can follow studies at Tilsley for one, two, or three years and leave with a fully accredited qualificajon. It is also possible, with the right qualificajons, to join Tilsley s programmes at the beginning of Years Two and Three. Please contact the College if you wish to discuss any of this further. 8 CerAficate in Biblical Studies and ChrisAan Ministry This one year, residenjal programme combines biblical and theological studies with pracjcal ministry experience through weekly placements, a week of Team Evangelism and a four week long Field Placement. Diploma in Biblical Studies and ChrisAan Ministry This is a two year full-jme programme where the first year is the same as the Cer/- ficate course. The second year is a mixture of Jme spent in ministry apprenjceship with a local church or mission organisajon and intensive, residenjal teaching weeks. European Baccalaureate in Biblical Studies and ChrisAan Ministry This third year builds on the foundajon of the Diploma and is also a mixture of college-based learning and church, or mission placement. The EuroBac provides an educajon which completes the bachelor cycle. The various ministry placements in all three years are organised with the student to give a meaningful ministry experience with, at its core, a mentoring relajonship with current ChrisJan pracjjoners. New Developments The third year was a new development in 2017 and is available for students who have completed the Diploma Programme (or equivalent). As Tilsley s Programmes are accredited by the European Evangelical AccrediJng AssociaJon and not a UK university, we are unable (by law) to call the three year programme a Bachelor degree. It is, however taught at RQF level 6/ SCQF level 9, or level 5b of the European framework and is what elsewhere would be described as a VocaJonal Bachelors and designated a Bachelor of Theology B.Th). Recent Diploma research papers have tackled issues such as reaching working class communities with the Good News, the principles and practice of curriculum development for children s work in churches, and some of the challenges of reaching the homeless with the Good News 6

12 COLLEGE FINANCE AND FEES Tilsley College aims to keep fees for its programmes to a minimum. This is achieved through all staff members raising their own missionary support from churches and individuals. The College fees, therefore, only have to cover accommodajon and food, and direct costs related to teaching and administrajon (including accreditajon). 13 WHERE IS TILSLEY COLLEGE? The college is based in the GLO Centre, in Motherwell. Glasgow is just twenty minutes away by car and Edinburgh is about an hour away. There are regular trains to both desjnajons and the railway stajon is just across the road from the College. Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are within 45 minutes drive. Strathclyde Country Park and the Duchess Park are within walking distance and Chatelherault Country Park with its historic hunjng lodge can be reached within ten minutes by car. There are many other historic and beauty spots well worth a day trip. The campus is small but azracjve, and is centrally located within Motherwell. There are individual study bedrooms and a limited amount of accommodajon for married couples and families. There is an azracjve and spacious library with ample seajng and computers for student use. As the college is based in the GLO Centre, students have ready access to the onsite coffee shop and an excellent ChrisJan bookshop. 11
