1 M.A. in Pastoral Ministry M.A. IN PASTORAL MINISTRY PROGRAM The M.A. in Pastoral Ministry is a collaborative arrangement between the North American Division Union Conferences and the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University. This 48-credit master s degree is delivered in each union via six-day field-based intensives. It is specifically designed for mature persons in ministry (employed or lay) who hold a bachelor s degree and have served in a ministry role for at least five years. This degree provides ministerial education for Adventist pastors employed by NAD conferences who otherwise could not attend traditional on-campus classroom learning. The tuition is subsidized by the unions and the seminary. PROGRAM OUTCOMES Students who complete this program will be able to: Deliver effective biblically-based sermons Demonstrate proper biblical interpretation skills Understand the historical-theological and missional development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church Train church members for evangelism Empower church members for leadership Reach specific social groups ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Bachelors or equivalent from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of Provide evidence of successful pastoral leadership during the past 5 years. The biblical principles of youth and young adult ministry, within the context of the church community, are given primary emphasis. Students will have an in-depth study from a pastoral perspective of selected issues having to do with the spiritual development of youth and young adults from fourteen to twenty five years of age. In particular, the reciprocal effects produced by the interaction of youth with such elements of their environment as home, church and society, will be examined for their potential impact on the fostering of that spiritual development. John Peckham DSRE 503 Marriage, Family, and Interpersonal Relationships Current issues in marriage and family are discussed, and available resources explored. The dynamics of interpersonal relationships are examined and students are challenged to emulate Christ s example as they interact with persons from all segments of society. Students will learn to identify patterns of interpersonal interaction in their families of origin and make best efforts to address observed relational irregularities or dysfunctions while affirming and strengthening their healthy ways of relating to others. The approach: (1) treats 1 st and 2 nd Corinthians as pastoral letters, not theological essays, from which, however, theology emerges and (2) emphasizes the original setting of each letter in order to draw lessons for today s ministry that are both practical and accurate to the pastoral intent of that original setting. Larry Richards MSSN 546 Ministry in Cultural and Religious Context The aim of this course is to provide a Christian and biblical framework for the understanding of the relationship between Adventist mission within cultural and religious contexts. The course explores concepts of intercultural communication with emphasis on the challenges Adventist missionaries face as they witness in cross-cultural contexts. Attention is also given to the fundamentals of culture, group organization, and social change. 8 Southern Union Forest Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church Apopka, Florida Dates: November 3-6 and 9-13, 2014 Nov 3-6 THST 695 Sanctuary Doctrine This course deals with selected themes and will be a study of the earthly and heavenly sanctuaries with special emphasis on the books of Leviticus, Daniel, Hebrews and Revelation. It investigates the drama of the ages: the Lord at work in His sanctuary, revealing His character and His presence with human beings, and progressively restoring them to life and full intimacy with Him. Thus the course is about salvation by grace through faith within the context of the Great Controversy. White Studies looks into contemporary issues related to the ministry and writings of Ellen White.
