2 Thoughts while packing for retreat: I am looking forward to being with my brother priests of Los Angeles for a reason other than a funeral. I know the older I get, I guess it should be expected but the older I get, the younger 50 and 60 seems to be. Please pray for priests and an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Father s Day and Christmas might be the two most difficult days of the year for me. Both days confront me with the path I did not choose. I thank God for my vocation to the priesthood, but on days like this, I am (at times) envious of men who are husbands and fathers and grandfathers. I pray they cherish their vocation and realize how precious and important their vocations as husband and father truly are. Bishop Alex Salazar wrote a letter of gratitude for the wonderful experience he had with our Confirmation Candidates on May 1 st. He gives special praise to our Youth Minister, Kristina Provence, and the other catechists. He hopes to be able to confer the sacrament of confirmation upon our candidates next year. We will be assembling an adult choir that will be singing twice a month and definitely at Christmas and Easter. I believe the rehearsals will be Thursday evenings in church. I hope we will be blessed to sing with them in August. Expect more information to come forth soon. My parents are doing relatively well. My dad has adjusted to life without a stomach. My mother, has not gotten use to the six to eight mini-meals my dad now has as they have (for the past few years) had almost all their meals together. Their wedding anniversary was celebrated quietly this year. Their 65 th anniversary is nearing on the horizon. My dad continues to play piano and is looking forward to be playing (and singing) at senior centers and nursing homes in the near future. The Liturgical Arts and Ministry Project (LAMP) for high school students was a pleasure to visit last week. It is exciting to encounter young people who make time for the Lord a priority and especially From Fr. Bill when they are willing to share their talents at the service of the church. Chloe, one of our teens, continues to impress me with her beautiful voice and growing confidence. The Sunday evening choir (and our parish) is blest to have her. We are planning in September to have coffee and pastries available after the 7:30 and 9am masses. The school will be hosting one of these each month. We are looking for groups who might be willing to host one every six months or so. If your group has any questions or would like to sign up, please call Juanita at the parish office. I miss Hortense already. She has been directing our RCIA, Adult Education efforts, coordinating our commission meetings and through our communication committee has been making sure we have fresh content in our parish website. She is retiring as of July 5 th. She plans to remain involved in parish life, especially as an RCIA catechist. We have a wonderful parish school. Nearly 80% of our students are Catholic (which seems to surprise some people). My hope is that any catholic child connected to our parish (If their family desires) should be able to attend. If you have a child (grandchild, nephew or niece) who is elementary school aged, please consider St. Jerome Catholic School. St. Jerome School will help them to have a solid foundation in the faith and an excellent education. Do call the school for information. About a year ago I visited Saint Jerome for the first time. Thank you for helping me feel at home. P.S. I know Advent is the usual time for making smooth the way of the Lord, however some things should not wait. This summer some work is going to be done on the parish parking lot. This should make walking a little safer and parking places easier to see. This work will impact a few days of weekday mass parking. We apologize for any inconvenience but know it will be worth it. When dates are set we will let you know. The Peter s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide to support the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters and others in need of emergency assistance. Pope Francis Pope Francis needs these funds to carry out his charitable works around the world. Special envelopes are in the pew and on the tables near the church entrances. We hope you enjoyed tasting some of our Filipino delicacies, reading some fun facts about the Philippines and socializing with other parishioners.
