1 The Messenger A monthly publication of Third Presbyterian Church Theologian and Former Stated Clerk to Be at Third Church Clifton Kirkpatrick, Professor at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and former Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be in Rochester and Third Church in January as the Hudnut Preacher He will help us explore the Belhar Confession, a theological statement from the South African church that is being proposed to be added to the Presbyterian Book of Confessions. On Friday, January 9, Kirkpatrick will lead a workshop for ministers On Saturday, January 10, he will lead a workshop for all church members from 10:00am to 3:00pm at the Gates Presbyterian Church. You can register by contacting Beth Williams at the Third Church office. On Sunday, January 11, he will be at Third Church for two events: 9:30 a.m. Adult Spiritual Formation 10:45 a.m. Preaching in morning worship Cliff Kirkpatrick is a leader in the global ecumenical movement, having completed a six-year term as President of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and served as the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). As Stated Clerk, he served as the chief ecclesiastical officer of the denomination and its primary spokesperson and leader in the ecumenical movement. As Visiting Professor for Ecumenical Studies and Global Ministries at Louisville Seminary Clifton Kirkpatrick teaches courses on the ecumenical movement, world mission and evangelism, and Presbyterian and Reformed theology and polity. He serves as advisor to Presbyterian students and is cochair of Doors to Dialogue, a Seminary-wide effort to ensure that all graduates are equipped to minister in a world of religious difference. The Hudnut Preacher, established following the death of William H. Hudnut, Jr., brings a preacher of note to the Third Church pulpit. Hudnut served as pastor of Third Church from January 2015 Vol. LXXXVIII No. 1 New Logo, Marketing & Communications Plan Third Church is introducing a new logo and messaging campaign in the coming months. In this Year of Invitation, we are developing new ways to tell our story and invite others who are hungry to experience faith in a community such as Third Church. Building on earlier focus group work done with the congregation, we have engaged the nonprofit Ad Council of Rochester to help us with the campaign. It is being funded by a special gift, apart from the operating budget. We hope the new messaging campaign will help all of our members to become ambassadors for this community of faith, to increase their participation, and to attract new participants to our life and ministry. The campaign will be built around six words that communicate the core values of Third Church spiritual, thoughtful, compassionate, inclusive, artistic, and engaged. It will encompass primarily print materials (e.g., postcard mailings, seasonal newspaper ads, interior and exterior signage). As we were developing the new concepts, we came to realize that the time was right to freshen our current logo, which is about twelve years old. Graphic designers Sarah Wisbey, a Third Church member, and Andrew Soucier developed our new logo, which gives nods to the traditional cross symbol of Christian faith, the interior architecture of the Third Church sanctuary, and continues the tagline Seeking the Light. We plan to use up all our existing print materials with the old logo (e.g., letterhead, etc.) until it s time to order new. However, we will begin using the new logo now in advertising, on our website and on our Facebook page.

2 THIRD VOICE Dear Friends, Happy New Year. May it be filled with peace and hope for you and yours, and for a world so seemingly intent on spinning apart. I continue to be challenged by events in Ferguson, Missouri, which represents all those places across the country where racial tension is either percolating or overflowing, predicated on, but not limited to, police-community relations. There are so many facets of this moment to explore, but the bottom line comes down to what writer Michelle Alexander calls The new Jim Crow, a huge gap in experience and opportunity between white Americans and African-Americans. As I have said several times from the pulpit recently, as a white male afforded a certain amount of cultural privilege, I need most to approach all of this confessionally. I can point to where racism happens but always mindful of my own participation, witting or unwitting, in it. I am hopeful that we at Third Church can begin some conversations about race within and beyond our congregation. Perhaps we can learn from the FR=EE (Facing Race, Embracing Equity) conversations happening in Rochester. I am also participating in the Person2Person program this year, whereby I have been partnered with a different racial background from me. We gather for regular conversation and discussion, and then meet in clusters to explore our experiences. Thus far, the experience has been very positive in broadening my own vision and deepening my perspective. In early January, we will be privileged to welcome Clifton Kirkpatrick to Third Church and Rochester (see page 1). Cliff teaches at Louisville Seminary and is a former Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly. He is also a leader in our efforts to add the Belhar Confession to our Presbyterian Book of Confessions. Belhar, as it is called, comes from apartheid South Africa in the 1980s and speaks to God s call to racial reconciliation. Here is a key section from the confession: Therefore, we reject any doctrine which, in such a situation sanctions in the name of the gospel or of the will of God Page 2 the forced separation of people on the grounds of race and color and thereby in advance obstructs and weakens the ministry and experience of reconciliation in Christ. If we believe that, and I do, how do we go about pursuing it? Join Cliff in that discussion. He will be leading an event at the Gates Church on Saturday, January 10. You are ALL invited to attend. He will also be leading spiritual formation at 9:30 a.m. on January 11 and preaching at our 10:45 a.m. worship service. Be there. In the meantime let us keep thinking on these things, and holding the reality of race in the United States in our prayers. What difference can you make? What difference can we make? How does our call to reconciliation live itself out in 2015? Where is God calling us to be? What is God calling us to do? Faithfully, WORSHIP SCHEDULE JANUARY 4 Communion at 8:30am 8:30am Worship in Chapel 9:15am Intercessory Prayer Chapel 10:45am Worship in Sanctuary Martha Langford preaching Close to God s Own Heart Jeremiah 31:7-14 and John 1:1-18 JANUARY 11 8:30am Worship in Chapel Lynette Sparks preaching Heavens Ripped Open Genesis 1:1-5 and Mark 1: :00am Intercessory Prayer Chapel 10:45am Worship in Sanctuary Clifton Kirkpatrick, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and former Stated Clerk, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) preaching JANUARY 18 8:30am Worship in Chapel 10:00am Intercessory Prayer Chapel 10:45am Worship in Sanctuary New Members received at 10:45am Lynette Sparks preaching I Saw You Psalm 139:1-6, and John 1:43-51 JANUARY 25 8:30am Worship in Chapel 10:00am Intercessory Prayer Chapel 10:45am Worship in Sanctuary John Wilkinson preaching What Repentance Looks Like Jonah 3:1-5,10 and Mark 1: :00-6:45pm Third Church Chapel January 7 Lynette Sparks leading January 14 John Wilkinson leading January 21 Lynette Sparks leading January 28 Martha Langford leading The Messenger

7 About Our Worship: Who Plans Our Worship Services? From the Worship, Music and Arts Committee The Presbyterian Directory for Worship outlines the responsibilities for worship planning. The session is to provide for worship and shall encourage the people to participate fully and regularly in it. The session shall make provision for the regular (a) preaching of the Word, (b) celebration of the sacraments, (c) corporate prayer and (d) offering of praise to God in song. (W ) Stewardship News Welcome to the first of what I hope will be regular columns on Stewardship. My goals are to keep you informed on the activities of your Stewardship Committee (see the names at the end of letter in your Stewardship mailing), and to highlight some of the important things your pledge dollars are accomplishing. Since this is written for the January Messenger available in late December, any statistics I might mention here are well out of date due to the early publishing deadline. For up -to-date pledge information, see your Sunday Bulletin or weekly Congregational Update. You may have noticed a small difference in the letter in your pledge mailing. In recent years, we have mentioned a dollar goal and a percent increase. Then we asked you to consider increasing your pledge by that percentage. Our 2015 campaign was themed An Invitation to Give. Your mailing did not mention a dollar goal, except we noted an estimated funding gap of $100,000.There was no percentage increase, but we did include a suggested amount which, if reached, would help to close that gap. Unlike previous years, we also included a modest request in the letter to members who hadn t pledged recently. At this writing, a large majority of those already pledging were able to increase their pledge. We are grateful for every pledge received, large or small. Did you notice that at the end of November, the two stained glass windows at the east side of the sanctuary, facing the garth, were returned, replacing the plywood in place for several weeks. They were repaired by Pike Studio after the ever watchful Elmer Dustman noticed they were sagging at the bottom. The repair cost of $8,500 was covered by the Building Major Projects budget, which is funded by your pledge dollars. Thank you. Reminders: Pledges are welcome anytime; the recommended budget is prepared in late January. Bill Coons, Stewardship Chair The minister has responsibilities which are not subject to the authority of the session, including the selection of Scripture readings, the preparation and preaching of the sermon, the prayers and music, and the use other art forms such as drama or dance (W a). The sequence of the elements of worship is the responsibility of the minister with the concurrence of the session. (W ) Here at Third Presbyterian Church, worship planning is centered on the Service for the Lord s Day Gathering, The Word, The Lord s Supper and Sending. The staff uses the Revised Common Lectionary the ordered set of scripture readings to plan themes, hymns, anthems, prayers and other elements of the worship service. The lectionary also helps coordinate worship with children s education and adult spiritual formation. Sermons, hymns and anthems are planned seasonally. Several times a year John Wilkinson and Peter DuBois meet to look at the lectionary and at the hymn texts together. Sermon topics and anthem selections have already been tentatively planned, and hymns are chosen to expand upon the themes of the lectionary, sermon and anthems. Youth choir and handbell anthems are also chosen for worship based on lectionary, sermon and music selections. Communion dates are set by the session annually. Baptisms dates are then selected around the communion schedule. Events such as Elder Ordination, New Member Reception and Sunday School Teacher Recognition are planned around Communion and Baptism so that any given service isn t over-filled with worship elements. Once the basic outlines of several weeks worth of worship services have been created, the ministers and staff work on each week s upcoming service, editing and making changes to the bulletin. Sunday s worship is finalized on Wednesday and bulletins go to print on Thursday. In addition to the nuts and bolts of assembling our worship services, planning also includes prayer, awareness of local and world events, and reflection on the needs of the congregation and the community. Our staff s mindful designing and preparation allow us to joyfully offer praise and glory to God each Sunday in worship. If you have questions or comments about worship, please don't hesitate to be in touch with Peter or John. Do you have a question about our worship at Third Presbyterian Church? jefisher100@gmail.com and we ll include it in an upcoming newsletter. The Messenger Page 7
