2 Warm Welcome!. UNITARIAN CHURCH OF VANCOUVER At the front of the church you will find unlit candles. You are welcome to light a candle in remembrance, in gratitude, in prayer, in celebration. The prelude helps to create a spirit for shared celebration and worship. Please refrain from conversing and please turn off your cell phones. Please visit our Visitors Table in the Sanctuary foyer and get a nametag. Drop by the Welcome Table in Hewett Centre after the service and stay for coffee or tea and friendly conversation. Learn about our church and our community. Look for people wearing yellow nametags, who are welcoming you today. If you are a new family visiting with children or babies, we look forward to welcoming you in person. Free childcare is available for children 3 and under, and children 4 and over are invited to join in this week s program activities. Children are also welcome to stay for the church service if they prefer. If you feel that you need to slip out of the service with a crying baby, please feel free to rejoin the service at any time. The service can also be heard in the foyer and in Hewett Centre. The seats in the rear of the church are reserved: (when facing the front) left side for parents with babies or small children in childcare, and right side for persons in wheelchairs & strollers. The UCV Campus is a non-smoking environment. TODAY AT UCV CHILDREN S PROGRAM: We are committed to providing safe, compassionate, age-appropriate programming for all children and youth who attend or visit UCV. Our goal is to build intentionally inclusive community across ages and explore big questions through story, art, and play. Sunday morning classes are presented free of charge as part of the mission of this congregation. Everyone attends the start of service together through the chalice lighting, opening hymn, and story for all ages. After the story, children of all ages may proceed to the lower level of Hewett Centre to the Channing room (south side downstairs) for our multi-age program, Spirit Play, led by our Religious Exploration staff teacher and trained volunteers. We welcome our very youngest to join us in this safe and exploratory space. Children registered for the Truth, Healing, and Reconciliation Reflection Guide for upper elementary (ages 8-11/grade 4-6) meet in the Parker room (central room) downstairs until 12:15. Coming of Age is a mentor based program for youth ages exploring their own beliefs about life, the universe, and everything. Registered participants meet in the Hitschmanova room downstairs until 12:15 pm. Please see Kiersten Moore, our Director of Religious Education if you have any questions or concerns.
3 Children and babies are welcome to remain with their parents/guardians through the service if they prefer. Please meet your child downstairs after the service: children under age 9 will remain in class until met by a responsible family member. Older children may join their family upstairs for social hour. YOUTH GROUP: Our High School Youth Group (grades 8-12) meets from 1 3 pm each Sunday in Hitschmanova on the lower level of Hewett Centre. Our Youth Group is led collaboratively by the youth and trained advisors. They explore issues of faith development, social justice, life experiences, trials, tribulations and joys of navigating life and they always include a good measure of fun and games. All youth members and visitors are welcome every week. ANCESTOR S SHRINE: Following our annual tradition in honor of Samhain, All Souls Eve, and many Autumn observances, the Children s Religious Education program will be transforming our Meditation Room today, into an Ancestor s Shrine to honor and remember those we love. We invite anyone who wishes to bring photos or mementos of loved ones to the Meditation Room before service on the 29th to add to the shrine. MEDITATION: Join us for the Sunday morning sitting meditation at 10 10:45 am. There is brief guidance at the beginning of each sit. In consideration of others, please try to come on time. Any i nquiries can be sent to victoriaoginski@gmail.com. TODAY S FORUM: 12:45 pm, Fireside Room Exploring Soulful Sundowns and Participatory Worship Leonie Armstrong Worship works best when it engages us, calls us into the moment, and connects us to something bigger than just ourselves. This can be the Mystery, our human community, the rhythms of the wider natural world we inhabit, the creative spark in art or music, or any of the infinite strands of the interconnected web of existence that resonates with us. As Unitarians, we recognize that worship need not follow only one shape or structure, especially in our personal practices. But how do we translate this diversity into our communal worship? Come explore the possibilities of participatory worship as we talk about Soulful Sundown services and creative ways to seek together joyfully in worship THANK YOU TO THE SUPPORT TEAM TODAY: COFFEE SET UP AND SERVERS Theresa Marion FLOWERS Lorraine Calame LIBRARY AND LITERATURE STALL David Buchanan, Leslie Hill SOUND Hans Elfert LUNCH No sponsored Lunch today GREETERS Margo Elfert, Pat Johnson, Denise Nereida, Paul Prescod, Hank Einarson, Terrance Einarson WELCOME AND INFORMATION TABLE Karin Hall & Dianne Crosbie

5 * This Mazurka honours my mentor and predecessor Harold Douglas Brown whose birthday would have been this month. This piece must have had special significance for him as it was the last one on his CD. It also provides the introduction to our Polish visitor from the past. Elliott **I was stumped to find a musical introduction for Kurt Vonnegut Jr. until Eric Wyness told me that this piece was chosen, by none other than Glen Gould, as the theme for the protagonist Billy Pilgrim in the movie 'Slaughterhouse-Five,' based on Vonnegut's most well-known novel. Elliott ***Modern Pagans view the world as a great Circle, majestically turning through the four Quarters of the Year, from season to season, with each Quarter representing a natural Element, a geographic Direction, and a specific Season, and each presided over by benevolent elemental forces, Guardians of each phase of our human lives, from birth to death, and beyond.
