Opening Hymn Bunessan Leader Leader and The Collect Leader O Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you

Leader Let us pray. Most high, omnipotent, good Lord, grant your people grace to renounce gladly the vanities of this world; that, following the way of blessed Francis, we may for love of you delight in your whole creation with perfectness of joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Psalm 148 All: Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! Teenagers: Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! Clergy: Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Acolytes: Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. All: He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed. Dog Owners: Praise the LORD from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command! Cat Owners: Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! All Other Pet Owners: Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! Adults: Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Children & Teenagers: Young men and women alike, old and young together! Adults: Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. Lay Eucharistic Ministers: He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. All: Praise the LORD! THE GOSPEL Matthew 11:

Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. At that time Jesus said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Reader After the Gospel The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily The Rev. Carri Patterson Grindon Statement of Faith Prayers of the BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS The congregation is seated. Announcements - 4 -

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: - 6 -

and Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving; We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our Ancestors; God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel and Leah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name

and Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN. Let us pray in the words our Savior Christ has taught us. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. All who seek God and are drawn to Christ are welcome at the Lord s table. If you desire to come up for a blessing instead of communion, indicate this by crossing your arms on your chest. THE COMMUNION The Gifts of God for the of God. The Bread and the Cup are given to the communicants with these words. The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen

All say In thanksgiving to the Creator of all, let us pray: Loving Creator we honor you, and we honor all that you have made. Renew the whole world in the image of your love. Give us what we need for today, and a hunger to see the whole world fed. Strengthen us for what lies ahead; give us courage to follow your call in this moment. For your love is the only power, the only home, the only honor we need, in this world and in the world to come. Amen. --Adapted from Matthew 6: Sarah Dylan Breuer THE BLESSING - 9 -

Closing Hymn All Things Bright And Beautiful Dismissal Leader: : Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. The Peace Celebrant: The peace of Christ be always with you. : And also with you

Announcements Adult Education: A New Thing 9:00 10:15 a.m. Brown Library The beginning of autumn is one of the natural transition times in our culture: farmers harvest the last crops, young and old go back to school, and many of us take stock of where we ve been and where we re going next. For the next few weeks, come and hear from some members of the parish we ve invited to tell us about a new project or a life change they ve made, and how their faith informs it. Oct. 9 Julie & Dave Dutra Regional forums set with coadjutor candidates All are invited to sessions planned for Oct. 7-9 Four regional forums with the candidates for bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Los Angeles have been scheduled by the search committee to provide opportunities to meet and confer with prospective nominees. The candidates are the Rev. Paul Fromberg, rector of St. Gregory of Nyssa, San Francisco; the Rev. Rachel Nyback, rector of St. Cross, Hermosa Beach, Calif.; the Rev. Anna Olson, rector of St. Mary's, (Mariposa Avenue) Los Angeles; the Rt. Rev. Pierre Whalon, Bishop of the Paris-based Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe; and the Rev. The format will include break-out sessions with individual candidates following a plenary session at each site. The schedule is as follows: Los Angeles County: Saturday, October 8, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Campbell Hall Episcopal School, Laurel Canyon Blvd., North Hollywood, with webcast of plenary session via the diocesan website, The forums will occur in advance of Diocesan Convention's Dec. 2-3 election of the bishop coadjutor, who, following the receipt of necessary consents from the dioceses and bishops of the wider Episcopal Church, will succeed Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno upon his retirement. Women s Soup: Tuesday, October 11, 6:00 p.m. Note time change! What is this and why does it matter? Andy Blackwood was a Boy Scout in St. Mark's Troop 1 when he contracted cancer. While being treated at City of Hope, he had 3 goals: to graduate from high school with his friends, become an Eagle Scout, and to organize a blood drive to help other people with cancer. Ultimately, Andy lost his battle with cancer, but he lived long enough to achieve all 3 of his goals. Each 15

year since, Troop 1 has partnered with City of Hope to hold this blood drive in his memory. Thanks to the support of our School and Church communities, this is now City of Hope's largest annual blood drive! Please contact Craig Snodgrass for more information or to sign up: or altadena.craig@gmail.com. He or Boy Scouts are happy to accept sign-ups from anyone 18 or over. If you have questions about your eligibility to donate, do not hesitate to ask as qualifications change over time. Refreshments and comfortable donation beds are provided. Heart Scan: Sunday October 16, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Brown Library SAFE Heart Screening checks athletes ages for undetected heart issues; Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of non-traumatic death in teens and young adults, and this quick, painless test can identify those at risk. Saint Mark's parishioner Justin Carr died of SCA, and his parents Susan & Darrell are working with SAFEHeart to prevent other families from experiencing this tragedy. Appointments last 15 minutes, with the scan itself taking less than a minute; suggested $25 donation, but no one will be turned away!
