Diocese exceeds goal in Capital Campaign Over 23 million raised for youth formation, retired priests, seminarian education By Jason Fulp Springfield If there was ever any doubt about the generosity and ability to give on the part of the members of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, it was soundly put to rest after the Diocese wrapped up its firstever Capital Endowment Campaign. Designed to raise funds to care for a growing number of retired clergy, to support seminarian education, and to help youth develop in their Catholic faith, the diocese exceeded its target of $15 million by raising a total of $23.2 million or 155 percent of the goal. There is never a good time for a Capital Endowment Campaign, said Bp. Edward M. Rice. The overwhelming support across the diocese shows the generosity of the people of our diocese. The people believed in the three areas of this campaign and they opened their hearts in a spirit of generosity. The overall participation in the campaign was 43 percent of all registered Catholics in the diocese, as compared to 30 percent-33 percent participation in dioceses which conduct diocesan campaigns. The average pledge across the diocese was $2,320. Of the 85 parishes in the diocese, 75 percent met or exceeded their targets. The cost associated with conducting the campaign was about two and a half percent of the total raised, much lower than other dioceses conducting campaigns, that typically would pay at least eight percent in fees. The money raised will earn interest in an endowment fund at Commerce Bank. The money will be professionally managed and monitored by the Diocesan Finance Committee, consisting of lay representatives from across the It is my hope that all of our youth, who wish to attend events such as these, be able to experience and grow their faith in a unique way, regardless of their financial ability to pay for the associated costs. diocese, Bp. Rice, and the Diocesan Office of Finance. Conducted under the theme, Grateful for Our Past, Preparing for Our Future, the endowment campaign will significantly strengthen the financial support for the growing number of retired clergy and the education of our seminarians. The new youth formation endowment will fund the establishment of developing plans and programs throughout the diocese. We have already seen the effects of our capital campaign in the area of youth formation. We have provided scholarships for our Diocesan Youth Conference and for the upcoming Steubenville Mid-America Youth weekends, Bp. Rice said. We know we also will be able to provide financial assistance for students wishing to attend Camp-Re-NEW-All, the National Youth Conferences, and the World Youth Days in the future. It is my hope that all of our youth, who wish to attend events such as these, be able to experience and grow their faith in a unique way, regardless of their financial ability to pay for the associated costs, Bp. Rice said. I see other future uses of the Youth Formation Endowment to possibly include purchasing or enhancing our summer camp facilities, developing a retreat program to provide an opportunity for all of our youth to attend a diocesan-sponsored retreat at an age-appropriate level, Bp. RETIRED PRIEST TURNS 90 A Mass of Thanksgiving was recently held in St. Henry Church, Charleston, in honor of the 90th birthday of Msgr. Richard Rolwing which was marked May 8. The recent Capital Endowment Campaign seeks to augment the existing endowment for the care of our priests in their retirement years. (The Mirror) Rice said. We also would like to establish training programs and opportunities for ongoing and continued formation with well-known national speakers and trainers for the youth directors in our diocese. According to Parish Campaign Director Gretchen Gambon, the success and overwhelming participation was no accident. We saw the work of the Holy Spirit and faithful people at work every day in this first ever diocesan campaign, Gambon said. I think it is apparent to say they have once again shown we are a truly awesome diocese. Beyond the numbers A common theme throughout the campaign was the generosity and faith parishioners demonstrated in giving. This was experienced time and time See Capital Endowment / 4

2 2 The Mirror May 12, 2017 DIOCESAN NEWS Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri responds to catastrophic flooding First MARCs (Multi Agency Resource Centers) scheduled for counties throughout diocese Springfield Thirteen inches of rain fell throughout southern Missouri between April 28 and May 3 this year. In the initial days after the flooding, Shea Lane, Director of Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Recovery for Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri (CCSOMO) traveled to nine counties (Barry, Christian, Greene, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, WEST PLAINS MARC Shea Lane, CCSOMO Director of Disaster Response and Recovery, at MARC in West Plains on May 9. (CCSOMO photo) Mon., May 15, Oregon County, Alton, MO, Location to be determined Tue., May 16, Ozark County, Gainesville, MO, Location to be determined Wed., May 17, Ripley County, Doniphan, MO, Caring Community Partnership All MARCs are open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Stone, and Taney) providing outreach to survivors, and partnered with other agencies such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army along with the State Emergency Management team to coordinate the disaster response. Lane was moving west to east across the state, following the path of receding waters. When I m in a county, I try to reach out to those affected in the more remote areas, Lane said, to answer their questions and let them know we re here to help. I was in Bull Creek in Taney County and the entire town of 69 homes and a gas station were badly damaged. Their power lines are buried under water and they have no electricity. In all disasters, Lane explained, Catholic Charities works with emergency managers and community partners to provide recovery to those affected, but the difference this time is how widespread the flooding is. Out of the 39 counties we serve, 22 were included in the State of Emergency declared by the governor. Currently, damages are being assessed under the leadership of the Red Cross. Typically, damage assessment takes a while and right now there are areas, especially in the Cape Girardeau area, where the water hasn t fully receded, Lane said. A federal disaster declaration cannot be made until the amount of damages is determined. Currently, CCSOMO staff is answering calls, providing information, and gathering names of those needing assistance. In addition, CC- SOMO has reached out to all Catholic parishes to determine whatever needs they, their parishioners, or the community might have. Jill Bryant, CCSOMO Manager of Volunteer Services, is coordinating the use of volunteers for both clean-up and longer-term needs. Catholic Charities attends all Multi Agency Resource Centers (MARCs) set up in response to the flooding. The first MARCs were held on May 8 in the towns of Neosho and Anderson. A total of 10 MARCs are scheduled for areas in our diocese. All MARCs are open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Check www. ccsomo.org for updates. A MARC is a one-stop shop for survivors, says Lane. Numerous state and local agencies and non-profits are there to offer information and assistance. Our staff gives out gift cards as needed. We talk to people one-on-one to see what their current needs are right now and then going forward, if they need longer-term assistance, such as home repairs. Although the number of those affected is not known yet, it is expected to be in the thousands. At the Neosho MARC alone, 384 survivors were seen. Their stories were similar, according to Judith Beaver, Catholic Charities disaster case manager. It s been devastating. These families hardly know where to begin, Beaver said. Many lost nearly everything they owned and many are now homeless. A familiar statement I heard was We stayed in a motel for three or four days, but we re out of money, and we don t know where to go. Stephanie and Matthew Quick are one of the families affected. The home we live in was completely destroyed. We were able to save a few items of furniture and put them in a 10 by 10 storage space, Matthew Quick said. That s all that s left from our three-bedroom home. Right now, we re basically living out of our car, moving around anywhere we can find, staying with family and friends, sleeping on couches. We have a child with special needs and it s really hard on him. Catholic Charities provides immediate assistance with resources and information on next steps. But, according to Lane, the real work of recovery begins with the follow-up calls that lead to long-term disaster DISASTER RELIEF CCSOMO staff, Shea Lane, Tammy Latimer, and Dee Maples, at West Plains MARC on May 9. (CCSOMO photo) case management and repair of homes. Although we don t know the final numbers yet, we do know some things about helping after a catastrophic disaster event, said Maura Taylor, CCSOMO Executive Director. We know that given the level of this disaster, there will be tremendous damage, and many of our neighbors lives will be impacted for a long time. We know the ones hurt most are those who were struggling even before the disaster, and most importantly, we know they need our help, Taylor said. State and federal aid is very limited. We also know that recovery will take many months-even a year or longer. So we plan to be there now and for the long-term. But we need the help of the Catholic community in order to do this. By acting together, we can have a great impact on the lives of so many people who are hurting right now. TM Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri Disaster Services program provides both immediate and long-term relief for survivors of natural disasters. We focus on unmet needs for those who are without adequate resources, disaster case management, long-term recovery, and repairing of homes. (CCSOMO photo) Do you have a church group interested in serving others? Our neighbors could use your help! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Recovery work from flooding begins with debris removal, muckouts, and clean-up, and then moves into home repair. The work will continue for many months, more than a year. Catholic Charities utilizes hundreds of volunteers every year in its disaster program and its home repair program. Please consider volunteering your time! Skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed. This recovery work is absolutely going to depend on volunteers, said Jill Bryant, Manager of Volunteer Services. Very little gets done without them. Our construction managers and staff will provide training and supervision. If you have a volunteer group interested in helping with debris removal, muck-outs, or home repairs, please call Jill at (417) Your help is greatly appreciated!

3 May 12, 2017 COLUMN The Mirror 3 COME, AND YOU WILL SEE Bp. Edward M. Rice As the world changes, the Cross stands firm! With the development of a more refined job description for Mr. Nick Lund-Molfese and utilizing his many gifts toward social concerns, advocacy, and forming partnerships within the community, I am pleased to announce that Nick began new duties for the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau as Diocesan Director of Social Ministry and Family Life beginning May 1, Most recently, Nick has been Director of Trinity Hills Catholic Worker House and Farm, where he and his family have assisted in meeting the needs of the poor, hungry, and homeless. Since its beginning in 2011, Trinity Hills has donated more than 50,500 eggs to food pantries, provided housing for 142 homeless guests, and hosted nearly 4,500 retreat and other event participants. This new direction will allow him to collaborate and network with other organizations to address issues of poverty throughout the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. The Diocese is proud of the legacy of service that was at the heart of Trinity Hills. While Trinity Hills will close, we hope to address crisis issues throughout southern Missouri with this new position, especially in the nine poorest counties in the State of Missouri. Nick s new titles are Director of Social Ministry and Family Life and Director of Health Affairs and Respect Life. Other staffing changes I would like to let you know of some additional staff changes at The Catholic Center that are occurring this month. Many of these changes are happening because Karen Pesek, who served as Director of Evangelization and Catechesis, Director of Child and Youth Protection, and Co- Director of the RCIA for the diocese and her husband, Ken, who served as administrative support for the Office of Child and Youth Protection, are retiring June 1 to the beautiful mountains of Colorado. More about them and their years of service later on. On Monday, May 1, Mr. Bill Holtmeyer began as the Director of Child and Youth Protection. Bill s position is one-half-time. He brings a wealth of experience to this job as he is a licensed counselor and serves on the Diocesan Review Board and as a Victim Assistance Coordinator for the diocese. The Office of Child and Youth Protection will be provided administrative support by Rosie Francka, a long-time member of The Catholic Center staff. As I mentioned earlier, Nick Lund-Molfese also began full-time ministry this month as the Director of Social Ministry and Family Life, Health Affairs, and Respect Life. He will be assisted by Kim Brayman who begins work in mid-may. You may remember Kim as one of the Capital Endowment Campaign directors. Additionally, Lynn Melendez will begin work this month as the Director of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Youth Formation. Lynn comes to us after serving in Campus Ministry and parish work at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Branson. Lynn will work with Rick Barnhart, Associate Director of Evangelization and Catechesis; Kim Brayman will assist the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis with administrative support; and Katie Newton, will serve as administrative support for youth formation. Finally, Estefania Salas has begun part-time work assisting Milagros Calvetti in the Office of Hispanic Ministry. May God bless all current and future staffers at The Catholic Center as we go forward in our individual and communal ministry. 4 4 The Mirror May 12, 2017 DIOCESAN NEWS Diocese exceeds goal in Capital Campaign From Page 1 Come & See weekends for college-age men and women The Office of Vocations & Seminarians recently sponsored two Come and See Weekends for men and women interested in the priesthood or life as a consecrated religious. On April 29, Fr. Patrick Nwokoye, Director of Vocation Promotions, traveled with interested college-age women to visit the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Nashville, TN. The men traveled May 5-7 for a weekend discernment retreat at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana. Diocesan seminarians Rev. Mr. Joseph Stoverink, Nick Koeppel, and Nicholas Newton were able to spend some time with the visitors and field questions about the seminary. Come and See events are a great opportunity for the young men and women to experience first-hand what life is like in the convent and in the seminary, said Fr. Nwokoye. For more information regarding upcoming events, contact Fr. Nwokoye at pnwokoye@dioscg.org or (573) Upcoming events Office of Vocations/ Seminarians announce Kenrick Glennon Days 2017, St. Louis. Young men who will be entering the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, in the fall (2017) are invited to Kenrick- Glennon Seminary for two action-packed days of swimming; capture the flag and trailblazer; educational sessions; Mass; Liturgy of the Hours; Confession; small group prayer; and more! Each participant is a member of a group of up to 10 young men, led by a junior counselor and a seminarian group leader. Kenrick-Glennon Days 2017 will be held at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary Session I: June 5-7, sixth-seventh grade Session II: June 8-10, eighth-ninth grade More information may be found at archstl.org/vocations/, including registration forms and What to bring sheets. TM again by those who were involved in administering the campaign at every level. One such person was Parish Campaign Director Bob Horton, who worked as a trainer and facilitator at parishes across the diocese. His role was to help each parish execute the plan and to train parish volunteers. In fact, Horton said it affected his spiritual life by being able to witness others living their faith and seeing God s work in amazing ways. It re-energized my spiritual life, Horton said. If the parishioners of Springfield- Cape Girardeau can be so generous, then I need to reexamine my spiritual life and my stewardship to my parish and the diocese. Horton was also touched by the many people he met and the bonds he forged with them. When his car was totaled in an accident that sent him to the hospital with 15 stitches in his forehead, the parishes that he was scheduled to visit that week, prayed for him, even though they had not even yet met. These people didn t know me from Adam, NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST Father Mike McDevitt and Bishop Rice with a group of Springfield Catholic High School students at the recent National Day of Prayer breakfast in Springfield. The third point of emphasis for the diocesan Capital Endowment Campaign was to establish an endowment for youth formation. Horton said of the tremendous outpouring of sympathy and prayer. Yet, when I was done at these parishes, it was like I was moving away from home. The same was experienced at the parish level in churches all over the diocese. As with so many parishes in the diocese, Nativity of Our Lord Mission Church in Noel, MO, is in a small, rural area and parishioners have limited resources. But, the parish reached 150 percent of its target, something that was not uncommon for churches of this size throughout the Diocese with this campaign. Masses of Thanksgiving for the Capital Endowment Campaign Bishop Edward Rice has scheduled a series of Masses of Thanksgiving in response to the stewardship and generosity of the Church in Southern Missouri to the first-ever diocesan Capital Endowment Campaign. Liturgies will be held at 6 p.m. in the following parishes with receptions afterward. Mon., June 19, St. Mary Parish, Joplin Tue., June 20, St. Agnes Cathedral, Springfield Wed., June 21, Sacred Heart Parish, Poplar Bluff Thu., June 22, St. Mary of the Annunciation Cathedral, Cape Girardeau (The Mirror) Too often fund-raising programs rely only on a small group of parishioners and the priest to do all the work said Noel Campaign Chair Anita Williams. However, this campaign model focused on involving many people in the church and everyone had a role to play. But this wasn t the only reason the parish did so well. Our church community takes great pride in giving, Williams said. We have a highly-engaged church group. People are generous and giving in any way possible. Our community loves to give. Williams also noted that the church strongly believed in the cause, especially that of youth formation. She also indicated that the campaign design enabled people to give smaller amounts over a longer period, without financially hurting their families. The success of this campaign will help stabilize our diocese for years to come, Bp. Rice said. With these three areas of financial support taken care of, the diocese can better focus on the mission being One Church, East to West, loving, serving, and sharing Jesus.
