He calls them to vigilance and invites them to present their petitions to God in his name. Jesus Christ himself answers prayers addressed to him. The Catechism of the Catholic Church compiles the living tradition of the Catholic Church and divides it into four sections: What Catholics believe (the Creed), how the faith is transmitted (worship and sacraments), how Catholics are called to live (moral life), and prayer. 2 2 The Mirror June 8, 2018 DIOCESAN NEWS/COLUMN Taylor diocesan nominee for Lumen Christi Award GUEST COLUMN Jeff Phillips Protect working Missouri families Taylor Springfield Maura Taylor, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri, is the diocesan nominee for the 2018 Lumen Christi Award from Catholic Extension. Dioceses were asked to nominate their best, brightest, and most inspiring people for the annual Light of Christ award. This year s group of 47 nominees pastors, sisters, brothers, lay leaders, deacons, and community groups show the enormous breadth of the Catholic Church across the country. The nominees offer their hearts and hands to build faith, inspire hope, and ignite change. In America s poorest places, they bring the light of Christ to those who struggle. Check them out at catholicextension.org. TM Bishop Rice greeted Mr. & Mrs. Briggs of Bolivar at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery Memorial Day Mass. God bless our fallen heroes in uniform & their families. Working people in Missouri face a major challenge in 2018 and a major opportunity. In August, Missouri voters will decide the fate of Proposition A, which began as Senate Bill 19, signed into law by former- Gov. Eric Greitens last year. Working Missourians stepped up and stopped the law from taking effect by spreading out across the state to gather signatures to force the so-called Right to Work issue to a public vote. Whoever named this terrible policy right to work needs to go to confession the name is a lie. We already have the right to work in Missouri. No one is forced to join in a union, as supporters claim. The truth is, union members choose to join labor organizations. With only 9.8 percent of the working population affiliated with a union, that leaves 90 percent of the jobs in the state non-union. People join unions for the benefits they provide: health insurance, pensions, and training. Don t Those who oppose right to work (Proposition A) only seek to maintain laws in Missouri that give working families a better chance of making a livable wage. want to join a union? No problem. Nine of the 10 available jobs in our state are non-union. So workers have a choice. Right to Work, presented to us as Proposition A, is bad for the people who live in states where it is the law. The US Census Bureau reports monthly median household income in right to work states is more than $700 less than in non-right to Work states, like Missouri. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports poverty and infant mortality rates are higher in Right to Work states than in non-right to Work states like Missouri. The Census Bureau also reports people who are younger than 65 that is, most working people are more likely to not have health insurance in Right to Work states than non- Right to Work states, like Missouri. The rate of workplace deaths is 58 percent higher in Right to Work states than in non-right to Work states, like Missouri. Union workers are typically more experienced and better trained. All these things lower the standard of living for people in Right to Work states. Anything that makes life harder for working families is un- Christian and un-catholic. Remember, the Holy Family was a working family. Growing up in Mt. Vernon, MO, my family belonged to St. Susanne Catholic Church. Every Sunday, I received a reminder that Jesus came Farewell reception for Sr. Blanca Rivera, MC from a working family. On the wall to the right of the altar, there is a statue of St. Joseph, the adoptive father of our Lord. In the statue, St. Joseph holds a planer an old-fashioned carpenter s tool. A tool of the trade of a man who worked to support his family. In Ozark, MO, they attend Mass at the parish with my favorite name anywhere: St. Joseph the Worker. Jesus was a carpenter, after all. In addition, this year, the legislature took aim on repealing prevailing wage, which sets a minimum wage for workers that build the most important aspects of our public infrastructure: roads, public schools, and government buildings. We cannot allow these critical public safety projects to be built by whoever is willing to work for the money. The Gospel tells us working people are worth the money. In Matthew 10:10, Jesus says, The laborer deserves his keep. In Luke 10:7, He says, For the laborer deserves his wages. Those of us who oppose right to work (Proposition A) and a repeal of prevailing wage are not asking for anything new. We only seek to maintain laws in Missouri that give working families a better chance of making a livable wage than they would if we approve Proposition A and lawmakers repeal the prevailing wage. As Christians, as Catholics, it is our duty to vote NO on Proposition A in August. I also urge you to contact your state senators and representatives and urge them to oppose a repeal of Missouri s prevailing wage law. TM Phillips is a member of St. Joseph Parish, Springfield. WELCOMING PASTOR Fr. David Coon, former pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Poplar Bluff, attended the recent farewell reception for Sr. Blanca Rivera, MC, at the parish. Nine years ago, Fr. Coon had invited the Congregation of the Poor Clare Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to serve the parish. Sr. Rivera is being re-assigned this summer by her community. 3 COLUMN June 8, 2018 The Mirror 3 COME, AND YOU WILL SEE Bp. Edward M. Rice Encouraging our youth & the Sacred Heart On Fri., June 8, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, I will confer upon Rev. Mr. Brian Straus the Sacrament of Holy Orders, ordaining him to the priesthood! We are grateful to Almighty God for the gift of his priesthood for the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. We have been blessed with a recent series of ordinations: on May 25, Rev. Mr. Andrew Williams was ordained to the transitional diaconate as he continues his study and formation on the road to priesthood. On May 26, Mark Kiblinger, James Farrar, and Alvin ( Al ) Stoverink were ordained to the Permanent Diaconate. All of these men will serve the Church of Southern Missouri. Our Vocation Director, Fr. Scott Sunnenberg, recently organized two vocations gatherings, one in Cape Girardeau and one in Springfield, to promote the religious life among the young ladies of our diocese. Called Project Miriam, the evening included prayer, sharing of vocation stories with area religious, and a meal. The format is the same for the Project Andrew Dinners that are held for our young men. All together, there were some 25 young ladies who have opened their hearts to consider the call to religious life. In fact, one young woman from our diocese has already committed to Encouraging our youth can be the beginning of something beautiful for God. entering a convent at the end of the summer. Open to God s will Vocations to the priesthood and religious life are out there! Nestled in the rolling hills of southern Missouri are young men and women who, with a little encouragement, will come forward to present themselves for formation. Each of us must do our part to encourage them to listen to God s urgings in their lives. When was the last time YOU encouraged a vocation from among your family members your son or daughter, a niece or nephew, a grandchild? Of all the statistics that are given, the Number One reason given by a young man or woman who is open to the call but who does NOT respond, is because they have never been invited to consider a vocation; no one has ever validated to them out loud what they may already be internally processing. It is that simple! Until someone points out to them the gifts they see and invites them to consider the vocation of priesthood or religious life, they may never undertake a response. We are told that one-third of all Catholic teens have considered the priesthood or religious life between the age of 10 and 25. One third! If the vocation goes unanswered, could it be as simple as the lack of encouragement from us, their faith community? Statistics seem to say yes. Recognizing and articulating the gifts we see in our youth is so important. Heaven knows they could benefit from the positive feedback, knowing that we wish them success in becoming the person God wants them to be. So, how do we move forward? I believe everyone knows a young person that would be a good candidate for the priesthood or religious life. Summon up your courage and issue them a gentle word of support and encouragement. The next step is to ask them to attend a Project Miriam or Project Andrew event. This simple step will provide them information, a connection to priests and religious who are willing to share their stories, visible community support, and it will allow them the time and space in which to contemplate God s will for them. Considering a vocation is a process and it involves the whole Church. We can t do it alone. And as long as we continue to go it alone, we may never find the courage to take the next step. Please join me in not only praying for vocations for our diocese, but also actively encouraging the youth of our diocese to respond to God s call. In fact, if you send me the name and address or of someone you think is a good candidate, I will send them a note of encouragement, too! TM MCC Executive Director Mike Hoey retires Jefferson City, MO After nearly 40 years of dedicated work serving the Catholic Church in the public policy arena, Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) Executive Director Mike Hoey has retired. Throughout Hoey his long career with the MCC, Mike Hoey stood up for the most vulnerable among us: the poor, the sick, the unborn, immigrants, and refugees, and embraced Catholic teaching to advocate for the common good. His work alongside legislators and others has garnered many victories for the people, and has protected Catholic values and ideals. He worked tirelessly, but never forgot to have fun along the way. His boisterous laugh and sense of humor will be missed within the office and around the Capitol. Hoey plans to enjoy time with family, landscape his backyard (aptly named, Hoey Henge ) and travel. 4 4 The Mirror June 8, 2018 MASS & EUCHARIST The first Christian altar was the cross By Elise Harris Vatican City Pope Francis said Wednesday that having Mass centered around the altar is meant to remind the faithful that the cross is the first Christian altar on which Christ offered the sacrifice of his life. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the Church uses various signs to continually make present the sacrifice of the new covenant sealed by Jesus on the cross, the Pope said Feb. 28, adding that this was the first Christian altar. When we draw close to the altar during Mass, our memory goes to the altar of the cross where the first sacrifice was made, he said. The Pope focused on the Liturgy of the Eucharist as part of his ongoing catechesis on the Mass, noting how the priest imitates several gestures that Jesus made during the Last Supper: the presentation of the gifts, the Eucharistic Prayer, the breaking of the bread, and Communion. During the presentation of the gifts, Francis said members of the congregation should bring the bread and wine to the priest, because they signify the spiritual offering of the Church gathered there for the Eucharist. Even if they don t bring their own bread from home as was the custom in the past, the rite of the presentation of these gifts preserves their spiritual value and meaning. Eucharistic gift In ordination Masses for priests, the bishop gives the new priest the bread and wine, saying receive the offering of the holy people for the Eucharistic sacrifice, which is important to remember, Francis said, because in the bread and wine is offered the commitment of the faithful to make themselves, obedient to the divine word, a sacrifice pleasing to God the omnipotent Father for the good of all his holy Church. Thus, the lives of the faithful, their suffering, their prayer, their work, are united to those of Christ and to his total offering, and in this way they take on a new value. While our own offering is small, Christ needs this little bit like what happened in the multiplication of the bread to transform it into the Eucharistic gift which nourishes and unites everyone in his body which is the God asks us for good will, an open heart, and the want to do better. Church, he said. In off-the-cuff remarks, the Pope noted that God asks us for little, but he gives us a lot. In daily life, he asks us for good will, for an open heart, he asks us to want to be better, and in giving himself in the Eucharist, he asks us for these symbolic gifts, which then become his body and blood. A concrete image of the prayer and offerings made during Mass is the use of incense, he said, noting that the perfumed smoke is symbolic of these gifts rising to heaven. By incensing the offerings, the cross, the altar, the priest and the people, the priest visibly manifests the offertory bond that unites all these realities to the sacrifice of Christ, he said, and told attendees to PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS In continuing his ongoing catechesis on the Mass and Eucharist, Pope Francis explores the presentation of the gifts, the Eucharistic Prayer, the breaking of the bread and Communion. The first altar is the cross, and on the altar, we each lay the small gifts we have, said the Pope. (Photo by Daniel Ibanez/CNA) remember that the first altar is the cross, and on the altar we bring the small gifts we have. Francis then noted that after placing the bread and wine on the altar, the celebrant asks God to accept the gifts that the Church has offered, which signifies the wonderful exchange between our poverty and his wealth. In the bread and wine we present him with the offering of our lives, so that it is transformed by the Holy Spirit in the sacrifice of Christ and becomes with him one offering pleasing to the Father, he said. The gift of self made in the Mass, he said, can help bring light to one s daily activities and relationships, as well as the suffering and joy that might be encountered. This, he said, will help Christians to build an earthly city in the light of the Gospel. 7 June 8, 2018 DIOCESAN NEWS The Mirror 7 Summer s Totus Tuus brings youth to Christ Dexter, MO Similar to the model of Vacation Bible School, Totus Tuus (TT) is a summer Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting Catholic Faith through evangelization, Christian witness, and Eucharistic worship. The week-long Parish Summer Catechetical Program for grades one-12 is filled with fun, faith, and friendship. Totus Tuus was Pope St. John Paul II s apostolic motto, Latin meaning totally thine or yours. It was the result of a deep, enduring devotion to Mary that grew strong when he was a young man, after reading the writings of St. Louis de Montfort, an 18th-century French priest. He then performed a 33-day (symbolic of Christ s 33 years on earth) consecration to Jesus through Mary. This devotion carried through his ministry as a priest, bishop, and pope. The methodology, structure, content, and enthusiasm of Totus Tuus is concerned not only with teaching the Faith, but also igniting the hearts of the team members and the young people they encounter, READING AT MASS Totus Tuus missionary Robert Hearnes helped a young lady read at Mass on June 6 in Sacred Heart Parish, Dexter. Totus Tuus launched in the diocese June 3-8. Youth participating in the program celebrate Mass each day. (The Mirror) said Lynn Melendez, diocesan Director of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Youth Formation. The result has been the formation of young adults who continue to dedicate themselves to the Church s mission of evangelization along with many vocations to the priesthood and religious life. How does it work? The mission of Totus Tuus is to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and openness to their vocation by the challenge to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of her. Totus Tuus calls upon college students and seminarians from across the United States to carry this mission to every young person they encounter. TT Missionaries are young men and women known for their energy, enthusiasm, love of the Faith, commitment to spiritual growth, ability to work with a team, and a desire to work with youth. Teams of four young adults (two men and two women) travel to a different parish each week, hosting a five-day catechetical program for children and youth that engages the parish community through their witness. There are messy games and crazy skits as well as catechetical learning joined with prayer and sacrament. Our college-age missionaries will provide an authentic witness to the students, said Melendez. Through their examples of joy and service, the youth see that these men and women are on fire with the Catholic Faith and they begin to long for the same thing in their lives. Four diocesan missionaries The four missionaries for Totus Tuus 2018 are members of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau: Lauren Barreca is from Cuba, MO, of the Diocese of Jefferson City, and is attending Missouri State University (MSU), in Springfield, and active in Catholic Campus Ministry. Judson Beam is a member of St. Mary Parish, West Plains, and a former student of Conception Seminary College who is actively discerning a call to the priesthood. He will attend MSU at West Plains this fall. Sophia Denney TOTUS TUUS MISSIONARIES Bishop Edward M. Rice celebrated Mass May 27 with four diocesan Totus Tuus Missionaries, Robert Hearnes, Judson Beam, Sophia Denney, and Lauren Barreca. After Mass and a special blessing, the missionaries embarked on a week of training in the Diocese of Wichita with other Totus Tuus (TT) missionaries. Wichita is the founding diocese of the TT program. Totus Tuus began in the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau June 3-8 in Sacred Heart Parish, Dexter. (Photo by Lynn Melendez/The Mirror) is a member of St. Agnes Cathedral Parish and is a Springfield Catholic High School graduate. She now attends Vanderbilt University. Robert Hearnes is a member of St. Henry Parish in Charleston and attends Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) in Cape Girardeau. He is active in Catholic Campus Ministry. The Totus Tuus curriculum The Sacred Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church provide the foundation of the instruction of the Totus Tuus summer catechetical program. The 2018 curriculum will focus on the Apostles Creed and The Luminous Mysteries. Consequently, Totus Tuus has divided the four pillars of the Catechism into a six-year teaching cycle: The Mystery of Salvation, The Apostles Creed, The Sacraments, the Commandments, The Virtues, and Prayer and the Our Father. To complement the six-year cycle, Totus Tuus follows a four-year cycle dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary: The Joyful Mysteries The Luminous Mysteries The Sorrowful Mysteries The Glorious Mysteries More information about Totus Tuus may be found on the Youth Ministry page of the diocesan Website, If your parish is interested in holding a Totus Tuus program in the summer of 2019, contact Lynn Melendez at (417) or lmelendez@dioscg.org. 8 8 The Mirror June 8, 2018 DIOCESAN NEWS Kenrick-Glennon seminary selected to participate in science for seminaries project St. Louis The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) announced that Kenrick-Glennon Seminary is one of only seven seminaries selected nationwide for the Science for Seminaries project. The announcement was made in the May 25 print issue of Science magazine. Kenrick-Glennon Seminary is the institution of the Archdiocese of St. Louis that prepares men for the ministerial priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church. The Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau presently has three diocesan seminarians in studies at Kenrick: Allen Kirchner, Daniel Belken, and John Hawks. Science for Seminaries is a project of the AAAS Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) program, in consultation with the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). The project helps a diverse group of seminaries from various Christian denominations integrate science into their core curricula. Participating seminaries will be awarded an 18-month grant to fund courses and programs exploring the connection between faith and science. Science & the Church Recent data from the National Study of Youth and Religion show that 72 percent of year-old Catholics think science and religion are in conflict, and 78 percent of lapsed Catholics in the same age bracket cite the alleged conflict of science and religion as a reason for their departure. In order to address this issue of growing concern, Kenrick-Glennon Seminary has been on the forefront of seminaries creating a deeper integration of science within the curricula with the goal of exposing future priests to science in such a way that is relevant to their future parish ministry. In 2015, Dr. Ed Hogan won a grant in the first round of the Re- Engaging Science in Seminary Formation project, sponsored by John Carroll University and funded by the John Templeton Foundation, for his course on Theology and Science. In 2016, Dr. John Finley won a grant in the second round of the Re-Engaging project for his course on the Science and Philosophy of Gender. In 2017, Fr. Robert Spitzer gave the Fifth Annual Glennon Lecture, focused on contemporary faith and science. The Kenrick- Glennon is one of seven new project seminaries in the country Spring 2018 edition of the seminary s magazine, The Herald, is entirely devoted to faith and science. Kenrick-Glennon Seminary is tentatively planning to conclude the Science for Seminaries project in November 2019 with a day-long conference on how science enhances faith, including the first ever Gold Mass in the archdiocese on or near the feast of St. Albert the Great, patron saint of science and scientists. A Gold Mass is one of the many color Masses that celebrate various professions, such as Blue Mass for emergency responders or a Red Mass for legal professionals. The Gold Mass celebrates the role of science and scientists in the Catholic Church. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world s largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science (sciencemag.org) family of journals. AAAS was founded in 1848 and includes 261 affiliated societies and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals. Science has the largest paid circulation of any peerreviewed general science journal in the world, with an estimated total readership of 1 million. The nonprofit AAAS (aaas.org) is open to all and fulfills its mission to advance science and serve society through initiatives in science policy, international programs, science education, public engagement, and more. For the latest research news, log onto EurekAlert!, eurekalert.org, the premier science-news Website, a service of AAAS.
