1 ROAD RALLY GALLERY The Mirror Vol. XLX, No. 9 DIOCESE OF SPRINGFIELD CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI August 22, 2014 Rewards of my Road Rally FAREWELL Staffers at The Catholic Center, Springfield, said goodbye to Bp. James V. Johnston as he left his office Thu., Aug. 14. After decorating his car with rally flags and a blessing imparted by Fr. Tom Reidy, chancellor, Bishop launched his Road Rally Revival Fri., Aug. 15. His first stop: Portageville. His Tour de Faith to all missions and parishes in the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau will conclude in Sarcoxie on Aug. 31. Traveling 17 days and some 2,000 miles, Bp. Johonston is personally communicating the diocesan Vision, Goals, and Priorities to the faithful in the Church of Southern Missouri. VISION, GOALS, PRIORITIES Fr. William Hennecke, pastor, St. Anthony Mission, Glennon, introduced Bp. James Johnston at his Aug. 18 stop on his Tour De Faith to personally communicate the diocesan Vision, Goals, and Priorities to the faithful in the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. See more Road Rally photos / 2 by Bp. James V. Johnston, Jr. When we had taken leave of them we set sail, made a straight run for Cos, and on the next day for Rhodes, and from there to Patara. Finding a ship crossing to Phoenecia and sailed on toward Syria and put in at Tyre. At the end of our stay we left and resumed our journey. Acts 21:1-3, 5 As I write this column, I have just completed day six (of 17) of my Road Rally Revival, with the goal of visiting all 84 parishes and missions in our diocese to share the five-year vision, and priorities and goals we will soon pursue together with God s help. I am being accompanied by Jerry Welker, my driver, a kind and generous man, who probably didn t fully know what he got himself into when he signed on! Jerry is a parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Cape Girardeau. As I compose this column, I can t help but recall the missionary journeys of St. Paul. Many of those were to visit the church communities he knew and loved. Like him, I hope to both encourage and challenge the faithful. The Catholic Church is a communion of our churches and the individual people who form them. The greatest reward of this amazing trip has been my heightened sense of communion that we share as Catholics in southern Missouri. This evening marked the 31st stop, a visit to St. Vincent De Paul Mission in Roby. In many ways, this last stop of our day was representative of what is both remarkable and beautiful about our far-flung diocese communities (often small and rural) living their Catholic faith with joy, sometimes in unexpected places. The church at Roby is a building that has seen several other prior uses, including as a Baptist church. It is accessible only by a gravel road which snakes for several miles through hardwood forest and an occasional pasture. As we arrived, I smiled at the large number of cars, and a boy and man carrying in dishes of something to eat following my presentation. As we left, Jerry and I agreed that anyone would feel welcome in Roby. Such is the character we have found all along our journey. Day seven begins tomorrow with a visit to St. Mark Parish in Houston. Only 53 more to go! Unlike St. Paul, I (fortunately) don t have to hitch a ride on a cargo ship. TM ROAD RALLY REVIVAL: ONE CHURCH, EAST TO WEST Bp. James V. Johnston greeted parishioners after his Road Rally Revival visit on Thu., Aug. 21, to St. Catherine of Siena Mission, Piedmont. ROAD RALLY FUEL Great food has been available on Bp. Johnston s Road Rally Revival. Yummy homemade treats were part of his stop at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Fredericktown, Tue., Aug. 19. The Catechism in brief 802 Christ Jesus gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own (Titus 2:14). The next issue of The Mirror will be Sept. 5, If you would like to receive the diocesan newspaper via in digital format, please contact Angie Toben at (417) , or her: atoben@dioscg.org. The Catechism of the Catholic Church compiles the living tradition of the Catholic Church and divides it into four sections: What Catholics believe (the Creed), how the faith is transmitted (worship and sacraments), how Catholics are called to live (moral life), and prayer.

8 8 The Mirror August 22, 2014 DIOCESAN NEWS/ADVERTISING Encuentro de jóvenes Missionary youth enounter held in Holy Trinity Parish, Aurora Award-winning Notre Dame cheerleaders ready for season MISSIONARY YOUTH ENCOUNTER Bp. James V. Johnston posed for a photo with several youth who participated in a day of discernment June 21 in Holy Trinity Parish, Aurora. Facilitated by Mario Delgado, vocation promoter for the Claretians Eastern Province, the purpose of the event/retreat was to animate the spirit of each young person, their gifts and talents, and to challenge him or her to discipleship with the joy of the Gospel. The approach was to plant awareness of the seed of faith at work in their daily journey and to help the 140 young people present to see the personal call that Jesus makes to them, specifically so that they can respond in concrete ways to transform their realities, their communities, and to deepen their encounter with God and the mission of the Church. The process, which included study of the word of God, Church documents, and panel discussions with diocesan seminarians and religious, helped the youth surface their capacity to contribute to building a civilization of love. The youth were encouraged to be heroes of their own evangelization and ultimately, to evangelize other youth.
