1 Inside this issue Missouri Catholic Conference Annual Assembly, Oct. 7 pp. 5-8 A special invitation p. 12 The Mirr r Vol. LIII, No. 9 DIOCESE OF SPRINGFIELD CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI August 18, 2017 One Church, East to West: Loving Jesus, Serving Jesus, Sharing Jesus The Catechism in brief The consequences of Adam s sin for humanity 420 The victory that Christ won over sin has given us greater blessings than those which sin had taken for us: where sin increased, grace abounded all the more (Rom 5:20) The Catechism of the Catholic Church compiles the living tradition of the Catholic Church and divides it into four sections: What Catholics believe (the Creed), how the faith is transmitted (worship and sacraments), how Catholics are called to live (moral life), and prayer. HUMAN PERSON IS KEY TO CARE FOR CREATION Instituted in 2015, Pope Francis calls Sept. 1 of each year World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, and care of creation is about the care of people, too. This year more than ever, with the recent of events of Charlottesville and Barcelona let s reflect on the Sabbath, creation, interconnectedness, and peace. Sr. Christin Tomy When I began taking care of our community s 1.5-acre vegetable garden this season, I imagined it going something like this: I d arrive to the garden in the cool morning hours to spend blissful days tending healthy plants, reveling in the glory of creation, and giving thanks for the miracle of Earth s bounty. Over meals prepared with said bounty, my sisters and I would discuss the importance of good stewardship and ecological conversion. Not surprisingly, my reality has been somewhat different: I arrive in the cool morning hours, groggy and sometimes sore from the previous day s work to begin yet another day of pulling the weeds that are ambitious in not only on surviving but also on doing it precisely where the leeks are trying to grow. Before I know it, another week has passed in a flurry of weeding and harvesting, and I ve hardly taken a moment to enjoy the company of the garden or my co-worker, let alone that of my sisters, who have been infinitely encouraging and grateful for the fresh produce. Let me be clear: I love this work. I find it life-giving and full of purpose. I enjoy the manual labor and don t mind working long days. However, the clash between my vision (however far-fetched) and my reality forces me to face, not for the first time, an unpleasant truth: I am far too prone to the self-serving workaholism so prized in our culture. Even in an idyllic setting, doing work that connects me with the changing rhythms of the seasons, it is hard for me to prioritize rest and restoration. And it is precisely because the choice is so difficult that I believe it is such an important one, even a radical one. So I ve been trying to learn and practice Sabbath. We practice Sabbath not just for ourselves, but for the whole world. Stemming from the Genesis narrative in which God rests after the work of creation and specifically blesses a day for humans to do the same, Sabbath reminds us that being human is about something more than work. Or, as Walter Brueggemann candidly explains in The New Interpreter s Bible: God is not a workaholic [he] has no need to be more secure, more sufficient, more in control, or more noticed. God sets the precedent here. But wait! my ego cries out. What about work that is good and selfless? What about the needs of our world that are clamoring for a response? Somebody has to be the hands and feet of Christ! Of course, there s an element of truth here. Some of the holiest See Sabbath / 10
2 2 The Mirror August 18, 2017 COLUMN/DIOCESAN NEWS MAKING SENSE OUT OF BIOETHICS Fr. Tad Pacholczyk The Expendable Children Couples who struggle to get pregnant are turning with greater frequency to the in vitro fertilization (IVF) industry for assistance. In some cases, they can end up feeling they are too pregnant when twins, triplets, or quads arise. This occurs from the practice of implanting more than one embryo at a time to improve pregnancy success rates. A multiplet pregnancy can involve significant risk, both for the children in utero, and for the mother. Because of these risks, the pregnant mother will sometimes be advised to opt for a selective reduction, where potassium chloride is injected into one or two of the growing babies, to cause their hearts to seize, followed by death and the gradual re-absorption of their bodies during the remainder of the pregnancy. This can allow the one or more remaining brothers or sisters to grow more safely and avoid further complications during the pregnancy. Given the incredible effort expended by the couple to become pregnant in the first place, these lethal practices often draw gasps of disbelief from others. A New York Times Magazine article from 2011 chronicled the saga of a woman who selectively reduced her pregnancy from twins to a single. Even though she tried to not think too much about the two ultrasound shadows within her, she was forthright about her justification for doing it: If I had conceived these twins naturally, I wouldn t have reduced this pregnancy, because you feel like if there s a natural order, then you don t want to disturb it. But we created this child in such an artificial manner in a test tube, choosing an egg donor, having the embryo placed in me and somehow, making a decision about how many to carry seemed to be just another choice. The pregnancy was all so consumerish to begin with, and this became yet another thing we could control. Her devastatingly honest They were created in laboratory glassware, experimented upon, their genes were tinkered with, and they were killed and dispatched as research fodder into biohazard waste containers. appraisal of IVF and the way it devalues the lives of children offers an important opportunity for reflection. When we take it upon ourselves to manufacture new human life in test tubes, it indeed becomes another thing we can control, an object for our own willful manipulation, another means to realize our own goals. This command and control mentality over procreation sets up a glide path for us to begin treating our own offspring like raw material, even tempting us to exercise an absolute, death-dealing dominion over them. As they are produced in the laboratory and transferred to the womb, our children can become an abstraction, mere pawns to be played in the end game of seeking what we want. Modified embryos This attitude of seeing our offspring as expendable is becoming more widely accepted not only among IVF customers, but also among biomedical researchers themselves. In August, a highly troubling report was published describing the first successful editing of DNA in human embryos. The experiments were carried out in the laboratory of Shoukhrat Mitalipov at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) and involved the generation of many dozens of embryos by IVF. The experiments utilized a new and highly precise DNA-editing technology called CRISPR-Cas9 to fix a defective, disease-causing gene that some of the embryos carried. While research into understanding and eliminating serious diseases is certainly good and praiseworthy as a goal, the techniques we employ as we pursue good research goals need to be good as well. Doing evil that good may accrue, is, after all, still doing evil. These research experiments performed on human embryos at OHSU were morally objectionable on a number of counts. If such genetically modified embryos had been allowed to grow up, there may well have been unintended effects from modifying their genes, unanticipated defects that they and future generations would bear. The problems and risks associated with this kind of germ-line therapy raise such serious concerns as to make it doubtful it should ever be attempted in humans. Even more distressing from the moral point of view is the fact that very young humans were treated not as ends, but as mere means to achieve particular investigative goals. They were created in laboratory glassware, experimented upon, their genes were tinkered with, and they were killed and dispatched as research fodder into biohazard waste containers. The purported darkness of medieval times was never as dark as the remarkable ethical blackness that is descending upon contemporary enlightened man as he exploits and destroys his own offspring. Vigilance and care are required when dealing with vulnerable research subjects, and human embryos are among the most vulnerable of God s creatures, entrusted to us as our children, calling for stringent measures to ensure their protection and safeguard their human dignity. 3 August 18, 2017 COLUMN The Mirror 3 COME, AND YOU WILL SEE Bp. Edward M. Rice A summer of blessings By the time you read this column, many schools will be back in session and the summer will be a waning memory. Looking back on this past summer, I call it the summer of blessings! In June, I traveled across the diocese offering Masses of Thanksgiving for the success of our diocesan Capital Endowment Campaign at St. Mary, Joplin, St. Agnes Cathedral, Springfield, Sacred Heart, Poplar Bluff, and St. Mary Cathedral, Cape Girardeau. It was a great way to acknowledge the generosity of our people to say thank you to so many of our parish leaders who worked behind the scenes organizing local fundraising efforts. On May 19, I ordained Rev. Mr. Brian Straus to the diaconate at St. Agnes Cathedral. I was in St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Cape Girardeau, on May 26, for the ordination of Fr. Joseph Stoverink to the priesthood, and then on to St. Peter the Apostle Parish, Joplin, June 2, for the priesthood ordination of Fr. Colby Elbert. What a beautiful way to begin the summer! From one end of the diocese to another, vocations are flourishing! In fact, on Aug. 2, Sr. John Mary Rainey took her first profession of vows as a Franciscan Sister of St. George the Martyr at the provincial house in Alton, IL. She is from St. Cecilia Parish, Kennett. Please keep Sr. Rainey, and all those discerning their vocations, in your prayers. On July 1-5, a group from the diocese traveled to Orlando, FL, to participate in the Convocation of Catholic Leadership. I was blown away with a renewed energy for the work of the Church in forming intentional, missionary disciples. First Annual The essence of missionary discipleship fits in so well with the three priorities of our Diocesan Mutually Shared Vision, to Grow in Holiness, to Form Intentional Disciples, and to be Sent to Witness. We will be bearing the fruit of this convocation for years to come, and you will be hearing more how it can impact our diocese very soon. Our Lady of Fatima In addition to these travels, I continue to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. Each month, beginning in May, through October, I have scheduled a Mass on the anniversary of the apparitions. This, too, has been a great opportunity to visit various parishes. The August Mass will be Sat., Aug. 19, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Mansfield, MO. The September Mass will be at Ste. Marie du Lac, Ironton, MO, with 6:30 p.m. rosary followed by 7 p.m. Mass. To mark the final apparition, I will offer 6:30 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. Mass at the St. Mary of the Annunciation Cathedral in Cape Girardeau. Particular Masses are also scheduled with our high schools and elementary schools, with a special prayer card to consecrate ourselves to Our Lady of Fatima coming in September. The message of Fatima prayer, rosary, and offering our sacrifices for BLUE MASS for all law enforcement & first responders Sat., Sept. 9, 2017 St. Mary of the Annunciation Cathedral during the regular 5:30 p.m. Mass Celebrated by The Most Reverend Edward M. Rice Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau SPORTSMAN CHAPEL Bishop Rice celebrated Mass with area anglers in the Sportsman Chapel at Bennett Springs, in Lebanon, MO, on Sat., Aug. 12. (The Mirror) the sins of others, as St. John Paul II stated, is nothing more than the Gospel call to conversion. I invite everyone to join me for the remaining Masses. Steubenville I truly enjoyed the time I spent at the two Steubenville Mid America Youth Conferences held at Missouri State University on July and July Each weekend had over 4,000 teens participate in these invigorating retreats. I hope all of you share in my joy when I tell you that we had 701 youth and chaperones from our own diocese participate in the weekends. A good number of them were supported financially through the third prong of the Capital Campaign, which focuses on youth formation. The generosity of our people is already assisting in the formation of our youth, and all of us should be proud! Thank you. Summer was peppered with parish anniversary celebrations, priesthood anniversaries, religious anniversaries. Masses and the Sacrament of Penance was celebrated at Camp Re-NEW-All sessions, and Catholic Man Night, and Catholic Ladies Night. A special highlight, was my visit to Camp Barnabas in Purdy, MO, a camp for those with special needs. I was so touched by the love and care given to them. Across the diocese this summer, I saw how the faith is being lived, renewed, and celebrated. As I often stated during the Capital Campaign, I wish each of you could travel with me for just one week to see all the good things I am privileged to witness. I hope your own summer was also a summer of blessings. 10 10 The Mirror August 18, 2017 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER/ADVERTISING Sabbath as a radical act From Page 1 people I know are also the busiest. The biographies of the saints detail their lives of activity and service, yet even the saints needed rest and rejuvenation. Dorothy Day, touted for her tireless commitment to the poor, famously quipped: My strength returns to me with my cup of coffee and the reading of the psalms. Okay, my ego persists, but what about Jesus? He rebuked his contemporaries for their stringent interpretation of the Sabbath rules. Here again is a degree of truth. Sabbath isn t about rules, but about restoring relationships. In addition to the weekly practice of Sabbath, the ancient Hebrews observed an entire sabbatical year every seven years, in which slaves were freed and the land was allowed to rest. Dominican Sr. Sarah Ann Sharkey explains in Earth, Our Home: Bibilical Witness in the Hebrew Scriptures: The understanding that Earth and all it holds belong to God undergirds Sabbath observance. The Sabbath promise concerns not only restoration of human life but also restoration of all creation. Sabbath encourages rest, yes, but also justice. In my own quest to practice Sabbath, the garden teaches me a simple lesson: The soil cannot produce endlessly. It must be nourished by careful cultivation, thoughtful crop rotation and, occasionally, total rest. Relentless production will exhaust it. Why should I expect my soul to be any Sabbath encourages rest, yes, but also justice. different? Yet as a society, we are systematically and without discretion applying this violence to all members of the Earth community. We equate value with usefulness. In the name of progress, we ravage the land and dehumanize anyone who doesn t fit the mold of productivity. People who are poor and the Earth are crying out. How will we hear them unless we take the time to listen? I propose, therefore, that Sabbath is not a luxury, but one of the greatest responsibilities of the privileged and powerful of our world. True Sabbath widens our lens. It calls us to put aside our designs and to surrender our plans, however well-intentioned they may be, to listen for God s call on our lives. Sabbath reminds us who we are and whose we are. The mind that comes to rest is tended In ways it cannot intend: Is borne, preserved, and comprehended By what it cannot comprehend. Your Sabbath, Lord, thus keeps us by Your will, not ours. And it is fit Our only choice should be to die Into that rest, or out of it. Wendell Berry, Sabbaths 1979 We practice Sabbath not just for ourselves, but for the whole world. The question, then, is not whether we can afford to practice Sabbath; it s whether we can afford not to. TM Christin Tomy is a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa, WI. She currently ministers as Care for Creation Coordinator at Sinsinawa Mound. Reprinted with permission by Global Sisters Report, globalsistersreport.org. World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, Sept. 1 In the United States, the most basic, powerful, and counter-cultural thing we can do for God s creation is pray. We live in a culture that values busy-ness and accomplishments. Following our Creator s call to Be still and know what I am God (Psalm 46:10) humbles us. Prayer is the foundation of all behavior and policy change. Only by the grace and inspiration of God can hearts and minds transform. Whether you will be taking time on September 1 to go on a meditative nature walk, celebrate liturgy in community, engage with Scripture, speak sacred words aloud, or sing your prayers, it matters. With prayer, we become open to God s guidance, inspiration, and calls to action. With prayer, God knits us closer together in community with one another and with all of creation. Nonviolence: A style of politics for peace Our Holy Father s Jan. 1, 2017, World Day of Peace message is timely for reflection: I wish peace to every man, woman and child, and I pray that the image and likeness of God in each person will enable us to acknowledge one another as sacred gifts endowed with immense dignity. Especially in situations of conflict, let us respect this, our deepest dignity,[1] and make active nonviolence our way of life. I would like to reflect on nonviolence as a style of politics for peace. I ask God to help all of us to cultivate nonviolence in our most personal thoughts and values. May charity and nonviolence govern how we treat each other as individuals, within society and in international life. When victims of violence are able to resist the temptation to retaliate, they become the most credible promotors of nonviolent peacemaking. In the most local and ordinary situations and in the international order, may nonviolence become the hallmark of our decisions, our relationships, and our actions, and indeed of political life in all its forms.
