2 A Welcoming Community: You enter this Church not as stranger, but as a guest of God. He is your heavenly Father. Come, then, with joy in your heart and thanks on your lips into His presence, offering Him your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and loyal ones who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship, and to all who have beautified it and hallowed it with their prayers and praise. Ask His blessing on those who love His house of faith as the inspiration of their labor, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, and may that blessing rest on you, both in your going out and your coming in. Parish Registration: You must be a registered member of The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish to receive Baptism, Confirmation, First Penance, First Holy Communion, Marriage and to receive sponsor letters from the pastor. New Members: Please stop by or call the parish office and register. (If you are leaving the parish, please notify the office before you leave). Thank you. Change of Address: Please notify the parish office as soon as possible if you have had a change of address. Inactive Catholics: As a welcoming parish, we ask every parishioner to ask God to put in your heart people whose hearts we need to reach out and touch with God s love. Before you talk to men about God, you talk to God about men. Please, call, write, leave in an envelope in the collection the name, address and phone number of the person. Father would be delighted to meet with them. SACRAMENTAL LIFE RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process to bring non-catholics into the faith. Anyone seeking information or interested in becoming a part of this community of faith can call the parish office. Sacrament of Baptism: Baptisms are scheduled for the 1 st and 3 rd Sundays of the month following the 9:30 AM Mass. In order to understand and better appreciate this special sacrament, parents are required to attend the Pre-Baptismal Program, which is held on the last Saturday of each month at 7:00 PM in St. Basil s Rectory. Please contact the rectory to schedule your child s baptism. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples contemplating marriage should notify the rectory at least six months prior to the date to allow necessary time for proper preparation. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick: Urgent calls will be attended to at any time of the day or night. Visitation of the Sick: Please call the parish for visitation of the sick at home, in the hospital, or health care facility. Parish Mission Statement: We, the Catholic faithful of The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, in union with our Holy Father, the Pope, and our Bishop, are called through Baptism to share in the ministry which Jesus Christ has entrusted to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. As priest and lay faithful in a rural area, we utilize our energy to serve the spiritual needs of the Kingdom of God to promote a culture of life, justice, and peace to this generation and the generations that follow us. Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary O Immaculate Heart of Mary, Heavenly beauty and splendor of the Father, you are the most valued Heavenly treasure. New Eve, immaculate in soul, spirit and body, created of the godly seed by the Spirit of God, you are the spiritual Mother of mankind. Pure Virgin, full of grace then and now, your whole being was raised Heavenly in full glory, to be elevated above all the hosts within the Kingdom of God. O Heavenly Mother, Queen of Heaven and earth, I recognize the glory of your highest title, the Immaculate Heart of Mary! Loving Mother, dispenser of endless blessings, you who continually intercede on our behalf, please present my need before your loving Son, Jesus. (Mention your request) O Immaculate Heart of Mary, I know that you are now presenting my need before Jesus, for you have never turned away those in dire need. Mother dearest, I await your favorable answer, submitting myself to the Divine will of the Lord, for all glories are His for ever and ever. Amen.

3 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, June 26 th, 2016 Sunday Readings First Reading: 1 Kings 19:16b, Elijah the prophet followed God s instruction to appoint a man named Elisha as his successor. Elijah threw his cloak over Elisha, who went and said good-bye to his family, then followed Elijah without question. Responsorial Psalm: 16 Second Reading: Galatians 5:1, Paul reminds us that people were freed from the old law through Christ. But he makes it clear that this freedom does not mean giving in to evil desires. Instead, we must be guided by the Spirit and most importantly, love our neighbor as ourselves. Gospel: Luke 9:51-62 Jesus set out for Jerusalem, and passed through a town where he was not welcomed. He reprimanded his disciples for desiring vengeance against the town. One man wanted to follow Jesus when he had finished his duties at home. Jesus expressed that a man who begins a task, but constantly looks back, is unfit for the reign of God. Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Toward Jerusalem Jesus is on the march and will not be turned back.. He is fierce in Sunday s Gospel, and sometimes the readings startle us. He rebukes the disciples. Jesus shouts, Let the dead bury the dead. He is moving fast, and his mood is intense. Do you remember the time when Jesus began his public ministry? We heard about it before Lent and Easter. He came back from the desert filled with the Holy Spirit and headed straight to his home town, Nazareth. He wanted to preach his mission, but his own townspeople rejected him. They were more than blunt about it: they tried to throw him off a cliff. Scholars call the first portion of Luke s Gospel the Galilean Ministry, which has been the subject of our scripture readings until this Sunday. Now a new section of Luke begins, called the Journey to Jerusalem. He leaves his home town, but now it is the people in Samaritan towns who turn him away. He had sent messengers ahead to warm up the audience, so to speak, but the villagers would not let him in. Jews and Samaritans were hostile to each other, and surely that is part of the reason for their rejection of him. But Luke says the real reason is that they knew he was going up to Jerusalem. Think about that phrase. The going up part is literal, since Jerusalem is built upon a hill or rise, and you have to climb to get up to it. But Luke wanted the metaphorical sense too. Jesus had set his face to go up to the height of the cross. The Greek word Luke uses for go up is the same one used in 2 Kings for Elijah s ascent into heaven. A flaming chariot and flaming horses came and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. But Jesus s going up will not be in a fiery chariot. His ascent will finish in a plunge downwards into humiliation and death. The hill of Golgotha was high and barren, and his life s ending was low and shameful. For the next ten chapters Luke will trace Jesus s deeds as parts of this urgent trip to Jerusalem. Now we see why Jesus was so severe: he know what going up to Jerusalem would mean. Do you want to go along with this man on his journey? What if you hear him say, The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head? Or, No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God? Very harsh. Wouldn t you or I turn on our heels and run away? Yes, but think about it. Jesus is saying that Christianity is a major challenge, not just a warm blanket. Jesus values God more than safe sleep, than courtesy to family and friends, than family funerals. None of these are evil or bad, they are good. But they receive their worth at the very core of themselves from love. Love, the primary reason for our lives and our deeds, the primary mission Jesus invites us to so keenly. Love of God above all, love of our neighbor as ourselves, no matter what. ~John Foley, SJ

The more remote, the more difficult the assignment, the more my love of God spurs me on. I am bound to proclaim that Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God. Because of him we come to know the God we cannot see. He is the firstborn of all creation; in him all things find their being. Man s teacher and redeemer, he was born for us, died for us, and for us he rose from the dead. All things, all history converges in Christ. A man of sorrow and hope, he knows us and loves us. As our friend he stays by us throughout our lives; at the end of time he will come to be our judge; but we also know that he will be the complete fulfillment of our lives and our great happiness for all eternity. I can never cease to speak of Christ for he is our truth and our light; he is the way, the truth and the life. He is our bread, our source of living water who allays our hunger and satisfies our thirst. He is our shepherd, our leader, our idea, our comforter, and our brother. He is like us but more perfectly human, simple, poor, humble, and yet, while burdened with work, he is more patient. He spoke on our behalf; he worked miracles; and he founded a new kingdom: in it the poor are happy; peace is the foundation of a life in common; where the pure of heart and those who mourn are uplifted and comforted; the hungry find justice; sinners are forgiven; and all discover that they are brothers. The image I present to you is the image of Jesus Christ. As Christians you share his name; he has already made most of you his own. So once again I repeat his name to you Christians and I proclaim to all men: Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega. Lord of the new universe, the great hidden key to human history and the part we play in it. He is the mediator the bridge, if you will between heaven and earth. Above all he is the Son of man, more perfect than any man, being also the Son of God, eternal and infinite. He is the son of Mary his mother on earth, more blessed than any woman. She is also our mother in the spiritual communion of the mystical body. Remember: [it] is Jesus Christ I preach day in and day out. His name I would see echo and reecho for all time even to the ends of the earth. In the kindness of your prayers, please pray for the repose of the souls of Elizabeth McKenna and James Rinker. As they shared in the suffering of Christ, so may they now share in the glory of the risen Savior in heaven.
