This is a love so deep that God chose to become one of us so that God could learn what it is truly like to be human. In the midst of the troubles and turmoil of this world, it can be easy to forget that God came to earth so that all of creation might be healed and reconciled back to God. It can be easy to get jaded about a loving God when all we see around us is pain and suffering, day in and day out. That is what the season of Advent is all about. It gives us a dedicated time to stop and reflect not only about the upcoming joy of the Christmas miracle, but also about the state of our lives and our world. We are asked to remember that by virtue of our baptism, we have a role to play in the coming of God s Kingdom in its fullness. It is a time for us to wonder about what God is currently up to in our world and what it is that we are being called to do and be in the world. As you might imagine, I have come to this year s Advent and Christmas seasons with a new perspective and appreciation for Mary s role in our salvation story. While I have always had great respect for Mary s courage in saying yes to becoming the Mother of God, preparing to have a child of my own has taught me more about what she went through and what we are called to. One of my favorite titles for Mary is Theotokos, which in Greek means Godbearer. Mary carried Jesus within her body and bore him into the world. That is no little task, as I am finding out. For the first several months, I was quite nauseated and utterly exhausted. Now, in the second trimester, the nausea has disappeared and most of my energy has returned but now I am faced with an everchanging body that is hard to predict and all sense of normal has vanished, including my usual sleeping patterns.

We may not bear God into the world in the same literal way that Mary did, but that does not diminish our role. As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to bring Christ into each situation that we encounter. Whether by word or deed, we are to make Christ s presence real and known in the world around us. Jesus gave us the simple blueprint of what that looks like when we explained that the greatest commandment was to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as our self. By living a life that demonstrates love of God and love of others, we bring God s Kingdom into fruition here in this world. The Incarnation is both a mystery and miracle that occurred more than two thousand years ago and an ongoing reality as God now dwells on earth in the people that are the Body of Christ. So, as we see and witness all of the sin, pain, and devastation around us, we need to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance about how we are to bear the Light of the World into the dark and broken places of the world. We are to seek out ways to make known the amazing love of God that sacrificed everything that we may be healed and reconciled with God. May these Advent and Christmas seasons truly be a time of contemplation for us as we marvel at the joy of God coming among us to be with us and guide us on our journey of being Theotokos for all the world. May God give you peace and blessings during this Holy season. Along with the unpredictability though has come great joy in being able to feel the movements of the child and begin to develop a relationship with him. I am often filled with a sense of wonder and awe that are impossible to describe. I also find myself wondering who he will be and what life will really be like when he arrives. In spite of my own experience, I still can t even begin to imagine how it would feel to know that I was carrying the Son of God and wonder about what His life would bring, especially with all of the trouble Mary must have had explaining the birth to those around her. Remember Trinity s Annual Giving Tree Please be generous as you are able (see page 9 for details)

4 4 Lessons and Carols for Advent This special service includes some of the most beautiful and inspiring readings of the Season. The prophecies and the story of the Annunciation which are a part of this service help us to make this a special time of the year. Our choir will present special music to go with the reading and you are invited to enjoy this special seasonal presentation at 10:00 am, Sunday December 9. At the conclusion the Lessons and Carols we will continue with the celebration of the Eucharist. Christmas Services Our Christmas Services this year will again include two nearly identical celebrations of the Eucharist on Christmas Eve at 5:00 PM and again at 11:00 PM. As has been the custom in the past few years the 5:00 PM Service will be geared for children, with special story just for children (adults are allowed to listen as long as they are quiet). This 5:00 PM service is especially designed for parents with small children who may wish to have them in bed before 11:00 service begins. Over the past several years, this has become an increasing popular service, so we encourage you to arrive early so that you might find your "favorite pew." At 10:30 PM, a special musical "prelude" to the Christmas Midnight Mass will provide the festive setting for the celebration of Christmas. The Midnight Mass will begin at 11:00 PM. Again, it's a good idea to arrive early since seating room is always at a premium both at Midnight Mass and at 5:00 PM. On Christmas Day there will be one Said Eucharist at 10 am. Volunteers Needed to Decorate Church For Christmas Remember that the Fourth Sunday of Advent falls on December 20th this year, The Altar Guild will be needing your help in making the change-over to the Christmas season. 9 9 Trinity Offers More Opportunities to Worship Each time we pray the Lord s Prayer we pray that God s Kingdom will come on Earth as it is in Heaven. Yet all you have to do is turn on the news to see how far from that reality we are right now. As Christians, we are called to live our Baptismal vows each day. We work and fight for social justice and the dignity of each human being. It is hard work and it can be discouraging when we see the magnitude of what is still to be done. That is one of the many reasons that it is so crucial for us to ground everything that we do in prayer and worship. In response to the growing needs of our community to expand our outreach and justice ministries, we will also be expanding our worship opportunities. Morning Prayer is held on Thursday mornings at 9:00 am in St Martha s house. Morning Prayer is an ancient prayer service which takes about 15 minutes and connects us to God and each other as we begin our day centered on God and God s call to us. A Dinner-Eucharist is held on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm in the Parish House. Come join us for a delicious dinner as we discuss Bible readings and celebrate the Eucharist together. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate. Trinity s Annual Giving Tree Trinity's Annual Giving Tree has been set up in the rear of the church. Each ornament has the information about a child in need of a gift. Please take one or more of these ornaments. Gifts are due by Sunday December 9th. Please contact Mother Angie for further information Please be generous as you are able. Jan 27 After the 9AM Mass Jan pm

10 10 Get To Know Your Fellow Parishioner: by Arlene Guellnitz Why I am here? Amazing as it may sound - when I first came to Trinity Church I did not speak for almost a year. What??? My parents brought me to their church as a baby. My Grandmother was a member of this church as well. I was baptized at this church. I attended Sunday School & Summer Bible School. A favorite memory of my childhood, is of giving a Flannel Board presentation of the 23rd Psalm at Vacation Bible School celebration. Trinity set me on the path of learning and teaching. Trinity took care of my family. I was 8 years old when my mother died of cancer. During her 3 year battle, the folks of Trinity took care of our family. They cooked meals for us, they baby sat my sister and me. An Altar Guild member brought me to church help her set up the altar. St Anne s Unit purchased Christmas dresses for my sister and me. I like to think it was that beautiful red and green plaid taffeta dress that I remember so well. When my Dad married my step -mother, Trinity was right there. Trinity helped me get ready to be a flower girl at the wedding and helped with food at the reception. In 1953 my family moved to another town and joined a different church. You can learn a lot in a community church and you do a lot if you live across the street from that church I went to Sunday School, sang in Children s Choir, joined YPF and taught Sunday School. I went to college in Tennessee where there was required attendance at a church every Sunday. I was home sick and a bit overwhelmed by the large Presbyterian Church so I went to the little Episcopal Church in town. I found comfort in the remembered prayers and services. I got confirmed. After graduation I moved back to NJ to teach. I loved being a teacher but I drifted away from the church. Then I met Bob Guellnitz. And as the story goes the rest is history. When we decided to get married in his church, the priest said, If being married in a church is important to you, then I expect to see you in church a lot. So we got involved in services, mission and vestry. We purchased a home in Colonia and became members of Trinity. We were what I call sitting members sitting in church but not active. Trinity people changed that hard to resist people who ask so nicely to help make funnel cakes or work a booth at the church fair. We joined the Food Pantry team. We were having fun and enjoying ourselves as well as working with people who helped the church and community. It became a place where I could use the talents God has given me. I could knit hats for a church mission. I could be a grown up acolyte. I could be in a group of amazing women who loved Strawberries. I could help organize an event where kids got a free backpack filled with school supplies. Seeing the smiles of those children when they got to pick out a backpack will be a picture in my memory forever. And thank you Trinity for your friendship, your smiles, your prayers and your efforts to do for others. And then there is my miracle. Bob and I were trying to start a family. I prayed a lot about becoming a parent. I came to church the day after my miscarriage. I wanted to pray for help to understand why. On that day, Sunday School was canceled and my quiet moment of prayer was filled with beautiful children laughing, smiling, sitting with parents and just being children. And suddenly I felt a calm, peaceful feeling - this would happen for me too. And it did. Thank you God! That is why I am here at Trinity. I am blessed. I am home.

11 11 Corner Come and See The Diocese of New Jersey has initiated a new stewardship program entitled: Come and See People Stewardship. Just as a church can raise money with objectives like pledges, so too a membership can raise people with objectives like conversation-pledges and invitation/welcome training, in which members of a church can comfortably share the enjoyment of their church experience with friends and neighbors. The goal is to bring people not currently involved in the church into contact with the church programs, membership community, physical location, and church vision. A goal of the program is to re-orient a congregation from inward-looking to a posture of outward-looking. Churches which are inward-looking are constantly courting things they think they have numbers attending, numbers and amounts of pledges, numbers and sizes of programs and services. These churches will die slowly or fast they will die. Churches which are outward-looking are aware of their internal numbers but their focus is in connecting with others, rather than counting and keeping what is there. The program provides for church growth which expands the volunteer base and the donor base of a church, allowing for the possibility that with faithful living and spiritual depth, the church will keep new members and become ever stronger as a body for the care of the world around it. In Matthew 4:19 Jesus says: Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. The Stewardship Committee, and The Way of Saint Paul team will be starting the conversation to initiate the Come and See People Stewardship program at Trinity. We will recruit committee members from within the wider parish, as we develop a program to train all parishioners to be fishers of men Offering Envelops Are Here Trinity s 2019 Offering Envelopes are here and will be available at the rear of the Church Since there has been an increase in the cost of printing and the addition of insertion of two new envelopes, Outreach Ministry Sunday and Mother's Day Diaper Drive, your Bishop's Committee is requesting that, if you are able, you use the initial offering envelope at the beginning of the pack to help off-set the cost of printing. The suggested donation for the off-set is $5.00 Please be as generous as you are able in supporting our Outreach Ministries because it allows Trinity to continue the most important work we do.

15 15 No Room at the Inn by Tina Chaves I always loved the Christmas story of Joseph and Mary sitting joyfully in the stable with baby Jesus lying at their side in the manger, cooing to the sounds of the animals nearby. A very charming story, but not totally based on reality. The truth of the story is that yes, Jesus was born in a stinky, smelly stable, probably laden with animal waste, and then laid in an animal s slobber-filled feeding trough as Mary recovers from the pain of childbirth and Joseph recovers from one crazy night!!! A far cry from those peaceful and idyllic Nativity scenes, for sure! In this, God shows us His humility. Nothing is beneath our God. But I think there is another lesson here. Jesus had to be born in a stable, as that was the only place in the town of Bethlehem that had enough room for Him. None of the inns in town had any vacancy. There was literally no room at the inn. This leaves us with the question: is there any room for Jesus in our inn...in other words, in our lives,in our hearts? Or have we let other things, such as material wealth and possessions, relationships, addictions, our own selves, etc., crowd out Jesus from our lives and from being first place in our hearts? Is Jesus welcome in all areas of your life, or are there some areas where a no-vacancy sign is shining? It is my prayer that we will all surrender those areas in our lives that leave no room for Jesus this Christmas Season. May there always be room for Jesus at our inns!!! Have a blessed Advent Season & a very Merry Christmas!!! Love & prayers, Tina Chaves Meeting Dates and Times of Your Bishop's Committee {Vestry} and Committees All Meeting are held in the Parish Hall, except where noted. 16 16 Volunteers Needed Eucharistic Ministers & Altar Guild During the past months, several of our Eucharistic Ministers and Visitors have left due to health, relocating or for other reasons. This has significantly depleted our numbers. As a Eucharistic Minister and/or Visitor you will have the satisfaction and develop a new sense of spiritually by participating directly, on the Altar, in the Holy Eucharist. As a Eucharistic Visitor you will be rewarded with a deep satisfaction of administering Holy Communion to those Parishioners who are unable to attend Mass. It does not involve much of your time to participate in this most satisfying Ministry. Depending upon the number of Parishioners accepting this challenge and joining the ranks of Trinity's Eucharistic Ministers and Visitors it can be as little as 1-2 hours per month. During the last several months, the ranks of our Altar Guild have been reduced and we are seeking women (or men) to join our Ministry. Serving as a Member of the Altar Guild is one of the most important and satisfying Ministries of our Church. When resetting the Altar, you are often doing it in the solitude of an empty Church that lends itself to contemplation and mediation. Most Altar Guild Members find this time most gratifying and rewarding. Each Attar Guild Member serves one month at a time. At present the Altar Guild is on a 3 month rotation. With additional members, the time between will be increased. To Volunteer or for further information, please contact Mother Angela or any Altar Guild Member. Won t you consider joining us!! You just might enjoy your service!! To Volunteer or for further information, please contact: Mother Angela For Reflection Use what talents you possess: The woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those who sang the best.
