NRSV ****************************** In 2014 Parramatta Mission ran its first Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race event. It is 2015 and the Race continues We would be pleased if you were able to attend this community engagement event, which will commence at 12:30 in Centenary Square Parramatta (outside the Town Hall) on Tuesday the 17 th February. Further information to be communicated and updates to be added to the Parramatta Mission website. 3 Leigh Congregation THANK YOU - Many thanks again to the generous crew from Leigh Memorial who contributed desserts & lent a hand at last Sunday's Combined Congregation's Westmead. Given the large numbers and the heat, it was quite an effort! Much appreciation is expressed by the organizers & all involved. Thanks also to Jan and our Westmead hosts - who looked after us so graciously. Rev. Veitinia had a very memorable weekend! PM HERITAGE COMMITTEE UPDATE - In honour of Rev. Veitinia, the Fijian/ Pacific Islands display in the refurbished Ministers' Vestry is being expanded to include photos/ memorabilia from last Sunday's dual celebratory functions. The Fijian congregation's presence at Leigh Memorial extends back over 30 years and has contributed significantly to the life, work and character of Parramatta Mission. Further acknowledgements of the Fijian contribution will follow during NB: Advance Heritage diary date: 9-30 August Festival for the 200th Anniversary of Rev. Samuel Parramatta Mission. SUNDAY LEIGH - Classes start back today! Welcome back to our families & kids! Many thanks to Alan, Samantha, Anne, Ken, Aunty Jo & our Gumnuts helpers for re-committing to another year of caring Sunday School teaching & helping in YEAR 3 BIBLE PRESENTATION - Many thanks to Couples & Friends for their gift of a 'Good News' Bible today for Seini Vulawalu. We've known lovely Seini since she was born - and here she is starting Year 3...time flies! Have fun Seini and God bless you. NB: The C & F's generosity with Year 3 graduation bibles is part of a very long tradition at Leigh and one that supports the children's learning in both positive and practical ways. LEAP (Leave Everything And Pray): A monthly prayer ministry of Leigh Memorial Congregation starts this Wednesday 4 February ( pm) at the Coffee Shop and will be held on the first Wednesdays of each month. 4 Westmead Congregation Last Sunday was a great celebration and thanksgiving for the wonderful ministry of Rev. Veitinia Waqabaca to the Westmead and Fijian Congregations of Parramatta Mission. It was a time of great joy, and an opportunity to express the respect and love and gratitude with which Veitinia is held. A big thank you to the Leigh Congregation, and the Fijian Congregation for supporting Westmead in this big family occasion, and thank you for your contributions. The Joint Nominating Committee has been meeting over the past several months, involving many meetings and finally, a candidate for ministry as Minister for the Westmead Congregation. That person is Rev. Christine Bayliss-Kelly, and Christine will be meeting with the leaders of Westmead during this week, and would like to meet with the Congregation next Sunday, 8th February. There will be a Congregation Meeting after the church service this day, when Christine will be introduced by the Presbytery to the congregation, and a vote will be taken for approval by the Congregation. As many people as possible are asked to attend this important meeting. Our dear friend Eva Banks has now moved to Mayflower Nursing Home. Our prayers and best wishes are with Eva, that she will be comfortable and soon adapt to her new surroundings. Karen Banfield s Dad, Terry, passed away in January, and we have all had Karen and her Mum and family in our prayers. Karen has been amazing in her support of her role in the JNC and has been back and forth to Bathurst even during this time. A BIG THANK YOU KAREN. Open Door started last Wednesday and was a happy and relaxed afternoon. You will be welcomed any Wednesday from 1pm pm. Weekly activities will resume from this week, and are as follows: Monday Bible Study 2pm; Tuesday Adult Fellowship 3pm (This is a monthly meeting); Wednesday Open Door 1pm.-3.30pm; Friday Tai Chi 10am-11am; TOC (TIME OUT CAFE) will also begin 11am -1.30pm Tuesday & Thursday. Parramatta Mission Ties and Scarves We are considering placing an order for Parramatta Mission silk woven ties and silk printed scarves and would like to gain an understanding of how many to order. The PM logo will be printed in repetition in black and red on white silk the ties and scarves will then be made from this custom fabric. 7 Well done to the team and volunteers of Meals Plus The Meals Plus Community Outreach Program was awarded Highly Commended Community Project of the Year at the Parramatta City Local Australia Day Awards. Well done to the staff and volunteers for their commitment to serving people each day at Meals Plus. Meals Plus serves a nutritious meal at both breakfast and lunch 5 days a week to people in our community who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or facing crisis. Meals Plus also assists people with shower and washing facilities. These facilities help provide a sense of dignity and assist with integration in our community. Meals Plus also assists with food hampers and referral services, helping people gain access to the support they need on their journey to recovery. For many, Meals Plus is also a community in which they belong someone to talk to, someone to laugh with, a place that cares. Meals Plus relies on many volunteers each day to help in the preparation of the meals and running of the service. Thank you to everyone who volunteers at, and supports Meals Plus. 8 Pastoral message for this week.. adieu Veitinia blessings in your retirement keep on building community Foster your faith this week as you read: Is 40:21-31 Ps 147:1-11,20c1 Cor 9:16-23 Mk 1: people joined in the celebration of the service of closure and retirement of Rev Veitinia Waqabaca last Sunday. An added dimension was that the three congregations and Faith Community of PM joined in worship followed by lunch. It was noted that people stayed after lunch to just sit round and enjoy each other s company. Thank you to all who made both the Saturday and the Sunday celebrations possible. Keith Hamilton. "Leigh Goes Latin" This year for our church concert in October our theme is all things "Latio" It promises to be a night of fun, music and colour. If you would like to be part of the fun, the music team is starting to rehearse the music. 11 Reflection Imagine a tree set beside a river. The tree has three branches, and each of these branches has smaller branches and twigs. The river is the river of life. The tree has roots that go down into the ground and the river. The ground represents our indigenous heritage. The trunk of the tree represents the three congregations. The three branches are representative. One branch represents Hospitality services, another Community Services, soon to be called Uniting Hope, and the third branch mental health services known as UnitingCare Mental Health. This tree is Parramatta Mission. A tree that began on the banks of the Parramatta River in 1791, and today its branches provide shade across Western Sydney, parts of Eastern and northern Sydney, and even the Central coast. It is a big tree. This is an image of our church. It is dependent upon drawing nourishment from the river of life, from God. The integral nature of Parramatta Mission is expressed in our structure. None of our three congregations can function by themselves or even as a collective. They need payroll to pay the ministers, Finance to pay the bills, Hospitality Services to attend to any property requirements. None of our programs and services, whether they be hospitality services, or community services or mental health services, can function by themselves. We need each other. Payroll can t pay themselves, they need Finance, and Finance, can t pay themselves, they need payroll. UnitingCare Mental Health is not a legal entity, does not have an ABN, can t write a cheque, sign a contract or pay staff. It cannot do administration. UnitingHope is the same. So also Hospitality Services. Everyone needs the IT department for phones and computers and printers. Everyone needs Hospitality services for property, but Hospitality Services needs the Finance and Administration Committee for approvals. Without the Board, there are no staff. Without the Church Council there are no Ministers and no Pastor. Parramatta Mission is interconnected. We need every part, and I have not mentioned we don t exist without the Uniting Church and all of its constituent parts. We are like a big tree. Blessings, Keith Hamilton
